More than two dozen alleged mobsters associated with three of New York's five organized crime families were rounded up by the FBI Wednesday morning in connection with an ongoing investigation, NBC 4 New York has learned.

The arrests are based on indictments charging extortion and other federal crimes relating to the private garbage-hauling industry, law enforcement sources said.

The suspects are being transported to the FBI office in Lower Manhattan for processing and will appear in federal court later Wednesday.

The U.S. Attorney's office is expected to release a statement outlining the investigation and specific charges.

The names of those arrested have not been made public yet.
