A man wielding a large machete has been shot dead by anti-terror cops in Boston. According to local authorities, the man was the subject of an active terrorist investigation and was being following by officers into a shopping mall in the Roslindale neighborhood of the city.

Here’s what you need to know:

    1. Boston’s Police Commissioner Said the Officers ‘Had to Take a Life’

Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans told the media that “Our officers tried their best to get him to put down the knife. Unfortunately, they had to take a life.” Evans explained that members of the Joint Terrorism Task Force, combining FBI agents and Boston police, surveilled the man to the CVS. The machete-wielding suspect confronted the officers. After he refused to back down, he lunged at the officers. He was then shot dead as both a member of the Boston Police Department and an FBI agent opened fire, reports the Boston Globe.

    2. The Suspect Died at a Local Hospital

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the CVS at around 7 a.m. on the morning of June 2. Neither officer suffered any physical injuries but are being treated for stress. The suspect was rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead, reports WCVB.

    3. Officials Aren’t Saying Exactly Why the Man Was Under Investigation

The suspect was in his 20. The Boston Herald reports that officials are not releasing any more information about him or why he was being trailed by anti-terror cops at this point. Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh told the Boston Herald “I’m leaving all comments to the FBI and the Boston Police Department. It’s an on going investigation so I’m not going to comment.” Walsh made the comments while he was on the scene.

    4. He Was Armed With a ‘Large Military-Style Black Knife’

FBI Special Agent in Charge Vincent B. Lisi told the Boston Herald that the machete being carried by the suspect was a “large military-style black knife, adding the suspect could have “done a lot of damage.”The Joint Terrorism Task Force is a partnership between the FBI and local police across the country. In addition to terrorism, the force investigates cases of wire fraud and identity theft.

    5. This Terrorist Incident Comes as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s Friends Are Being Sentenced

    (Getty)

This potential terrorism shooting comes as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s college friends are due to be sentenced in Boston. The friends are accused of covering up evidence linking the Boston Marathon Bomber to the 2013 attack. For his role in the obstruction, Dias Kadyrbayev was sentenced to 72 months in prison.

A Boston police officer has shot and killed a man who had been under surveillance by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, ABC News has learned.

The FBI had been tracking the man for several weeks, and authorities are looking into whether he may have been radicalized by ISIS propaganda online, law enforcement sources said.

An officer and an FBI agent approached the suspect at about 7 a.m. today in the parking lot of a CVS in Roslindale, Massachusetts, police said. The suspect then pulled a "military-style knife," prompting numerous commands from the officer and FBI agent to drop the weapon. But when the suspect refused, both the officer and FBI agent opened fire, officials said.

The suspect died at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, police said. The man’s name was not immediately released.

The incident comes as a political debate intensified in Washington over renewing key parts of the PATRIOT Act, which federal authorities insist allow them to more sufficiently track so-called "lone wolf" terrorists and others who radicalize themselves online.

Such radicalization "represents the newest element of the terrorist threat facing the country, where we have individuals who affiliate with terrorist ideologies but do not coordinate their operational activities with terrorist organizations," said John Cohen, a former top Homeland Security official who is now an ABC News contributor.

"This poses the most significant counter-terrorism challenge" for U.S. authorities since the 9/11 attacks, Cohen added.

Source: Man fatally shot by Boston police part of terror network

By Ray Sanchez, Evan Pérez and Shimon Prokupecz, CNN
Updated 2:59 PM ET, Tue June 2, 2015

(CNN)A man who was fatally shot by police in Boston on Tuesday was part of a broader terror investigation involving suspected Islamist extremists being tracked by the U.S. Joint Terrorism Task Force, a law enforcement official said.

The suspect belonged to an ad hoc terror network, said a second law enforcement source.

Police and federal agents shot and killed the man after he waved a large military-style knife at officers, authorities said.

The suspect was identified as Usaama Rahim, according to his brother, Ibrahim Rahim, who posted about the death on social media.

The FBI-led task force had been watching Rahim and two associates believed to be radicalized by ISIS and other extremist influences, according to a law enforcement official. Rahim had been monitored for at least a couple years.

The FBI noted a recent change in the suspect's behavior, including social media threats against police, which prompted them to try to approach him Tuesday, according to the official.

Ibrahim Rahim, an imam at the Lighthouse Mosque in Oakland, California, wrote on Facebook that his brother was shot while at a bus stop on his way to work.

Ibrahim Rahim said his brother was shot three times in the back during the confrontation. He said his brother was on the phone with their father.

The suspect had been under surveillance by the U.S. Joint Terrorism Task Force, Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told reporters, without elaborating.

Evans said the shooting occurred at about 7 a.m. after officers and FBI agents confronted the unidentified man, who turned around with a large black knife.

The officers retreated and ordered the man to put down the weapon before they opened fire, Evans said.

"Unfortunately, he came at the officers and, you know, they do what they were trained to do and, unfortunately, they had to take a life," Evans said.

A Boston police officer and a federal agent opened fire on the suspect, Evans said.

    The shooting is under investigation.

Man Arrested in Terror Probe After Suspect Shot Dead in Boston

    by TOM WINTER

Boston Terror Suspect Wielding Large Knife Fatally Shot 2:28

Police in Massachusetts Tuesday evening arrested a man as they conducted a terrorism investigation involving another man that was fatally shot by police in Boston earlier in the day, a senior law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation told NBC News.

The identity of the person arrested by Boston police and Massachusetts State Police has not been released. He was arrested by authorities following up with the terrorism investigation into the man who was killed, Usaama Rahim, the source said.

It isn't clear what charges, if any, the second man may face.

Rahim, 26, was shot and killed after he brandished a military-style knife and threatened officers after he was stopped for questioning at around 7 a.m. at a CVS pharmacy parking lot in Boston's Roslindale neighborhood, FBI Special Agent in Charge Vincent Lisi said at an afternoon news conference.

Rahim had been under 24-hour surveillance by the Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force, and a senior official told NBC News they were investigating whether he had become radicalized by ISIS-inspired social media messages and feared a terror plot was in the works.

The Boston police officer and FBI agent wanted to interview him at the scene, but had no warrant for his arrest. Officials are reviewing whether the shooting was justified, but early surveillance video and witness statements indicate the officers' "lives were in danger," Evans said.
