Mom of Suspect in Texas Deputy Darren Goforth's Killing Says He Was With Her

    by M. ALEX JOHNSON

Suspect arrested in killing of Texas sheriff's deputy 2:20

The mother of the suspect in the execution-style killing of Texas sheriff's Deputy Darren H. Goforth said her son can't be the gunman because he was out shopping with her at the time.

Shannon Jaruay Miles, 30, of Cypress, Texas, is charged with capital murder after Goforth, 47, a 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office with a wife and two kids, was gunned down seemingly at random Friday night.

Miles is being held without bond pending his arraignment Monday morning in Harris County District Clerk.

Sheriff's investigators said they had no leads on a motive and were operating on the assumption that the gunman walked up to Goforth at a Houston gas station and shot him simply because he was wearing a uniform.

Before he was officially charged, Miles' mother told NBC station KPRC of Houston that she and her son had been out shopping at the time and couldn't get home because police had surrounded their street.

When they finally made it home, she said, they were ambushed by armed SWAT officers and police dogs.

Miles initially wasn't designated as a suspect until a weapon from Goforth's shooting was recovered and ballistics tests indicated it was match with a gun belonging to Miles, Sheriff Ron Hickman said Saturday.

Hickman said investigators hadn't been able to get any information from Miles, who has a record of minor misdemeanor arrests dating to 2005 but no felony history.

Amjad Latif, the manager of the gas station, told NBC News on Sunday that he was at the cashier's desk Friday night when customers began shouting that there had been a shooting. When he looked out the window, he saw a man shooting downward, he said.

Latif, who said he heard five or six shots, said he immediately locked the front door and called 911.

“Fuk Yo Flag (#FYF911)” describes the movement on its website as:

The most powerful movement in the world right now. We, the people, are psychologically and physically breaking free of the imperialist, colonialist, and racist empires by burning representations starting on September 11th 2015.
Why September 11th? We recognize that these imperial powers attacked their own citizens on 9/11 in an attempt to gain more power from its people.

We are not disrespecting any citizen that may have died during these attacks on this day, instead we are acknowledging that, from this day forward, we are holding ALL imperial nations responsible for their needless deaths!
On 9/11 we will be burning American flags, confederate flags, police uniforms, and ALL representations of organized evil and oppressive nations.

We also will be raising the Liberation flag and building on a new nation for the people. This is an INTERNATIONAL movement and a day of unity, progressive action, and liberation.

To all OPPRESSIVE AND ORGANIZED EVIL after #FYF911 the people will not be bound to you any longer!!
**** YOUR FLAG!! Hashtag #FYF911 to see what people are doing in your area.

I would suggest that unless there is more info on organizers and background that the FB page and FYF911 website are placed possibly by ISIS supporters. Imagine the ISIS egomaniacs starting a race war in the USA. I do not mean to make light of it as a threat, but even as a bad attempt at ISIS recruiting, it can cause hell to break loose!

'Pigs in a blanket' chant at Minnesota Fair riles police

By KYLE POTTER 46 minutes ago

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — An organizer behind the Black Lives Matter weekend march outside the Minnesota State Fair stood by the group's chant to fry police "like bacon," saying Monday that law enforcement officials are cherry-picking a 30-second chant to take issue with an otherwise peaceful protest.

Protesters were captured on camera yelling "pigs in a blanket, fry 'em like bacon" during Saturday's four-hour march around the fairgrounds in St. Paul. The chant was viewed by some law enforcement members as targeting police officers.

St. Paul Police Federation President Dave Titus told WCCO-TV it was ignorant and disgusting. The group's protest came hours after a suburban Houston officer was gunned down.

"I don't think chanting or singing what's basically promoting killing police officers is peaceful," Titus said.

Dennis Flaherty of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association said in a statement he had been contacted by officers in St. Paul and throughout the state who were outraged by the chant.

Black Lives Matter St. Paul organizer Rashad Turner told the Associated Press on Monday that no one was advocating for violence against law enforcement. He said it was meant to call for similar treatment between black people and police officers.

Turner said the uproar shouldn't focus on the group's chant but instead on recent police killings of unarmed black men and women like those in Ferguson, Missouri, Cincinnati and Baltimore.

"We're not going to be distracted by their attempt to minimize our movement and focus on a chant that lasted 30 seconds," he said.

The group is planning a Tuesday afternoon protest outside the residence of Gov. Mark Dayton, who last week labeled the group's fair protest plans "inappropriate." Turner said Dayton should apologize and address the group's concerns.

A Dayton spokesman said any group has the right to protest outside the governor's residence if they follow city ordinances. Turner said protesters plan to shut down traffic on St. Paul's Summit Avenue if the governor doesn't come out to talk with them.

Accused killer of Texas police officer has history of mental illness

    • Shannon Miles was sent to mental hospital after 2012 arrest

    • Sheriff’s deputy Darren Goforth was ambushed and shot 15 times

Monday 31 August 2015 18.55 EDTLast modified on Tuesday 1 September 201510.38 EDT

The man accused of shooting and killing a suburban Houston officer has a history of mental illness and once lived in a homeless shelter, authorities said on Monday.

Sheriff’s deputy Darren Goforth of Harris County was ambushed and shot 15 times, the Harris County district attorney, Devon Anderson, said in a court hearing for Shannon J Miles, who is charged with capital murder.

Miles, a 30-year-old Houston resident who said little in court, is being held without bond. His criminal history dates back to 2005 and includes an arrest in Austin in 2012 that led to Miles being sent to a state mental hospital for several months.

Anderson would not comment on a motive, saying investigators were still trying to figure that out. When asked if it might be connected to heightened tensions around the country between law enforcement and civilians, Anderson said, “I have no idea whether it does or not.” This weekend, Sheriff Ron Hickman said the attack was “clearly unprovoked”, that authorities believe the 47-year-old deputy was targeted because he was in uniform and there is no evidence Goforth knew Miles.

Anthony Osso, one of Miles’s two court-appointed attorneys, told the Associated Press that his client intends to plead not guilty. “He had indicated to the investigating officers that he was not involved in the case,” Osso said in a telephone interview.

In 2012, the Travis County district attorney’s office charged Miles with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he got into a fight at a homeless shelter over a remote control, prosecutor Joe Frederick said. Miles was found to be mentally incompetent in October 2012 and he was sent to North Texas state hospital in Vernon, Texas.

“From this case, you could never tell what would happen” in the future, Frederick said, adding prosecutors treated the case as a “very serious offense” and had offered Miles a plea agreement of seven years in prison. Miles was declared mentally competent in February 2013, but the charge was dropped after the victim could not be located, Frederick said.

Miles also has three convictions for resisting or evading arrest, as well as convictions for disorderly conduct with a firearm, criminal mischief and giving false information to police. Records show he was sentenced to several short stints in jail, anywhere from six to 10 days.

In court on Monday, Anderson read the probable cause statement, which said police first received a call at 8.20pm on Friday. Responding officers found Goforth’s body face-down at the gas station in the Houston suburb of Cypress.

Surveillance video from the gas station showed the 10-year law enforcement veteran had just come out of a convenience store when Miles got out of his red truck, she said. “He runs up behind Deputy Goforth and puts the gun to the back of his head and shoots. Deputy Goforth hits the ground and then he continues to unload his gun, shooting repeatedly into the back of Deputy Goforth,” Anderson said.

Goforth was shot 15 times, Anderson said, and shell casings match the .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun found at Miles’s home. Miles’s next court date is 5 October.

The killing evoked strong emotions in the area’s law enforcement community, with Hickman linking it to heightened tension over the treatment of African Americans by police. Goforth was white and Miles is black.

The nationwide “Black Lives Matter” movement has sought sweeping reforms of policing. Related protests erupted in Texas recently after Sandra Bland, a black woman, was found dead in a county jail about 50 miles north-west of Houston three days after she was arrested on a traffic violation.

“We’ve heard Black Lives Matter, All Lives Matter. Well, cops’ lives matter, too,” Hickman said on Saturday.

From fall 2003 to spring 2004, Miles attended Prairie View A&M University, which is the same school Bland went to, though the two did not attend at the same time and there is no indication they knew each other. He also attended the University of Houston for a time.

Osso said Miles’s defense team is distancing itself from the sentiments expressed by the sheriff, the district attorney and others.

“What I want to do is investigate the case and defend my client based on the facts of the case,” Osso said.

Lieutenant Roland De Los Santos of Houston police, a childhood friend of Goforth’s, called the deputy a “simple guy” who was focused on providing for his family, noting that Goforth’s wife is a teacher and the couple has a 12-year-old daughter and a five-year-old son.

Goforth’s funeral is scheduled for Friday.

#FYF911 Protest in Stone Mountain Fizzles Badly by Debra Heine
    September 11, 2015 - 7:59 pm

#FYF911, a black militant group that bills itself as “the most powerful movement in the the world right now,” was supposed to hold a massive flag-burning protest in Stone Mountain, Georgia, on Friday.

As PJ Media reported on Thursday, black supremacist ”King Noble” made the announcement on YouTube last week, promising that “we, the people, are psychologically and physically breaking free of the imperialist, colonialist, and racist empires by burning representations starting on September 11th 2015.” The organizers’ goal was to trigger “the end of U.S. imperialist white supremacy.”

One #FYF911 supporter, Nocturnus Libertus, tweeted that 2500 protesters came out to Stone Mountain on Friday, with dozens of police cars and MRAPs there to greet them.

“The cops are in full riot gear and advancing toward the crowd,” she tweeted.

But according to Weasel Zippers, Nocturnus unfortunately had some technical difficulties so she couldn’t load any of the pictures or videos.

The sad truth is that only eight people showed up for their measly anti-flag protest.

And it wasn’t long before they were sent home with their tails between their legs.
