300,000 troops, 900 tanks: It’s called the most massive Russian military exercise since the Cold War, and China’s role is growing

Following last year’s massive Russian military exercise on the western border, the country is headed into the largest military drills in nearly four decades on its eastern flank.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced this week that the Vostok-2018 exercise from Sept. 11-15 would involve as many as 300,000 troops, 1,000 aircraft and 900 tanks with units from China and Mongolia also participating.
The drills will be “on an unprecedented scale both in terms of the area covered and in terms of the numbers,” Shoigu told Russian state media.
It will include all their military’s airborne units and both northern and Pacific naval fleets, he said.
“Imagine 36,000 pieces of military equipment moving together at the same time — tanks, armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles. And all of this, of course, in conditions as close to combat as possible,” he said, CBS News reported.
The last time this many Russian and allied forces mounted in such a training drill was in 1981, before the bulk of new U.S. soldiers were born and a decade before the end of the Cold War, according to Reuters news agency.
With thousands of troops and tanks moving toward the Suwalki Gap and the Baltic Sea, the Russian military exercise that starts this week is fueling fears of confrontation with the U.S. and its NATO allies.
    By: Todd South
Russian officials have called such large-scale exercises necessary in an environment of aggressive and hostile actions from the United States and European neighbors.
This Russian effort also coincides with U.S. military shifts from counterinsurgency work in the Middle East to equipping, manning and training for “near-peer” competitors such as Russia and China.
The announcement comes amid what some experts have called the lowest point in relations between Russia and NATO allies since the end of the Cold War.
    Ambitious plans
Beginning in 2010, Russia announced its military buildup to modernize and expand its military footprint. Much of that has been delayed through failed equipment procurements, falling oil prices and U.S.-led sanctions.
For instance, to upgrade their stealth fighter fleet they first announced an order for 52 PAK-FA T-50 jets, which dropped to 12 after costs rose beyond the planned budget, according to Newsweek.
An ambitious plan put out three years ago would have acquired 2,300 high-tech Armata T-14 tanks by 2020. But within a year they instead pushed to refurbish 3,000 existing tanks used by the former Soviet Union forces between the mid 1970s and early 1990s, Newsweek reported.
Though the announcement was first relayed to NATO allies in May and NATO military attaches were invited to attend, it is only since Shoigu’s public comments that media attention has emerged.
This marks a stark contrast with last year’s Zapad-17, which took place within and near Belarus, near Baltic states, whose leadership sounded alarm bells over Russian maneuvering offensive operations in the region.
Russian officials stated that only 12,700 Russian troops participated in the much-scrutinized exercise. But multiple experts cried foul and put the exercise figure at more than 100,000 troops.
Shortly after the western district exercise, Poland held its own, defensive, exercise dubbed Dragon-17 that used 17,000 troops and 3,500 pieces of equipment for more than a week.
Since then, Polish officials have publicly called for a permanent U.S. military base within their borders, in part to deter perceived Russian aggression and advancements.
That echoes an agreement earlier this year to double the number of U.S. Marines on a rotational basis in Norway from about 330 to 700.
That announcement drew a sharp response from Russian officials, who said it violates decades old NATO agreements and called it an “attack” on the region.

Much of the worry and posturing comes after the 2014 Russian takeover of Crimea, which was followed by subversive Russian support for pro-Russian factions fighting in Ukraine, which continues today.
In addition, an estimated 3,200 Russian troops were recently stationed in Georgia and another 7,000 in Moldova, both against the opposition of those nations’ governments, Newsweek reported.
The upcoming training event would see three times as many as last year’s western district exercise roving around areas of Russia’s eastern and central military district, which borders China.
That’s nearly half of the entire Russian military force, which numbers close to 800,000 troops, Newsweek reported.
    China’s involvement grows
China’s role is limited but new.
More than 3,000 Chinese soldiers with 900 pieces of equipment will work jointly within the Russian borders for the exercise. Past versions of the Vostok exercises have planned for China as the aggressor or enemy, rather than an ally.
While China has conducted joint training with Russia since at least 2005, it has not before done so within Russian borders at this scale, experts told the Wall Street Journal.

Well, folks, you can thank Robert Mueller, John Brennan, James Clapper, Jeff Sessions, Rob Rosenstein, Bob Corker, James Comey, Don Lemon, Anderson Cooper, CNN, NBC, and oh yes, John McCain for .... WWIII.

But don't worry, Trump's got this. When he said last week to DOJ, "do your job, do it right, and do it now", he meant it. He's not going to let a bunch of dishonest, lying, cowards drag the United States into a war with anyone, let alone Russia.

Blasts at Damascus airbase after possible missile strike

Powerful blasts have rocked a military airport in Damascus, with reports suggesting it was targeted by a missile attack or an airstrike. The military said they were caused by a short circuit at a nearby ammunition depot, however.
The blasts occurred at the Mazzeh military airport late on Saturday night, according to multiple reporters on the ground. Explosions can be heard in footage from Damascus posted on social media.
According to unnamed officials and intelligence sources cited by multiple media outlets, the airbase was the target of an airstrike or missile attack, and Syrian air defenses responded. Some reports suggested that there had been three explosions, targeting a research center in Jamraya, near Damascus, and a military depot, which suffered a direct hit.
#Israel has previously launched strikes against Syrian territories and was accused of targeting the Mazzeh airport, but it has not officially acknowledged it as a target. Israeli missiles reportedly hit the airfield in 2016 and January 2017. After the latter strike, the Syrian military warned Tel Aviv of repercussions for the “flagrant attack.” The Israeli government does not comment on the details of its military operations abroad, but it has claimed it had hit Iranian forces on Syrian soil.
However, one military source cited by Syrian state media outlet Sana, has denied that there was an attack, instead saying the explosions were caused by a short circuit at a munitions dump.
The airport is a key Syrian air-force base located in the Mazzeh (Mezzeh) municipality to the southwest of central #Damascus.

"Grave Mistake": Trump Threatens Assad Over Impending Idlib Assault

Trump and Nikki Haley have put Assad on notice tonight: "Grave Humanitarian Mistake" & "No Chemical Weapons" ahead of final major battle for Syria.

    Mon, 09/03/2018 - 20:39

It seems to happen just about every September and April over the past years: every time the Syrian proxy war seems to have receded from international media attention for a period of a long summer or a winter, a mass attention-grabbing event or massacre happens to suddenly yank the world's (and the White House's) focus right back on the war and a return to intervention and escalation mode.
And curiously, this seems to occur the moment Assad and the Syrian Army alongside the Russians are on the path to overwhelming victory.

    Donald J. Trump‏Verified account @realDonaldTrump
President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!
    3:20 PM - 3 Sep 2018

On Monday evening of Labor Day, President Donald Trump weighed in with what's clearly a veiled threat warning Syria and its allies via Twitter:
President Bashar al-Assad of Syria must not recklessly attack Idlib Province. The Russians and Iranians would be making a grave humanitarian mistake to take part in this potential human tragedy. Hundreds of thousands of people could be killed. Don’t let that happen!
And immediately following, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley tweeted her own statement based on the president's words, while specifically invoking the US charge that Assad plans to use chemical weapons.
Haley wrote: All eyes on the actions of Assad, Russia, and Iran in Idlib. #NoChemicalWeapons

    4:29 PM - 3 Sep 2018

These latest threats confirm what we previously reported over the weekend: that the US is seeking to create a quagmire for Russia and Iran in order to pressure both countries to acquiesce to Washington's demands. In the case of Iran the White House is seeking new negotiations after the US pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) last May.
In 2013, top Obama Administration officials described their policy in the Syrian War as one of keeping the war going. The administration wanted a big seat at the table for a political settlement, which officials clarified meant ensuring that the war kept going so that there was never a clear victor. The Trump Administration is now slipping into that same destructive set of priorities in Syria.
The Washington Post last week quoted an unnamed Administration official as saying that “right now, our job is to help create quagmires [for Russia and the Syrian regime] until we get what we want.”

During the two prior Aprils, Trump ordered massive airstrikes on Syrian government targets after blaming Damascus for claimed chemical weapons attacks on civilians.
Trump's latest tweet, for the first time addressing the final showdown over Idlib specifically, singles out "the Russians and Iranians" as "making a grave humanitarian mistake" should they "recklessly attack Idlib Province".
Thus the president seems to be precisely calculating that the battle for Idlib can be used an opportunity for putting increased pressure and global attention on Tehran and Moscow.
So clearly, something big is coming possibly in the form of a "rebel" claimed "provocation" as the Pentagon and US officials have over the past week continued pushing the gambit, setting the stage to play the "Assad is gassing his own people" card should so much as an inkling of a White Helmets allegation emerge, in an unprecedented level of telegraphing intentions for leverage on the battlefield.
Except someone should remind the president that the "rebel" coalition in control of this major "final holdout" is but the latest incarnation of al-Qaeda, calling itself Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and has held the province, the capital city of which is Idlib city, since a successful Western and Gulf ally sponsored attack on the area in 2015.

    Brasco_Aad‏ @Brasco_Aad
IMPORTANT message from The #US Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL- Brett McGurk- on the situation in #Idlib #Syria: ''Idlib Province is the largest ALQaeda safe haven since 9/11, tied directly to Ayman al Zawahri (current #ALQaeda leader) & this is a HUGE problem''

    Video at the page link

    11:21 AM - 22 Aug 2018

Regardless, it now appears the US stands ready to respond militarily to even the most unlikely and flimsiest of accusations issued by al-Qaeda terrorists and groups like the 'White Helmets' which operate alongside AQ-linked fighters.
And why wouldn't Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham militants, now surrounded by Syrian and Russian forces and facing imminent defeat, redeem what's essentially the US offer to "call in the Air Force" against Assad's army? All they have to do is utter the words "chemical weapons attack!" to their friends in the Western media and in Washington.
But in terms of the trustworthiness of such a claim that's surely being prepared, all the president needs to do is honestly listen to his own top State Department official, Special anti-ISIL envoy Brett McGurk, who accurately described in an unusually frank assessment a year ago:
"Idlib provice is the largest al-Qaeda safe-have since 9/11, tied to directly to Ayman al Zawahiri, this is a huge problem."
But again, Trump's latest words appear more designed for leverage unfortunately with the threat now on record (similar to Obama's 2013 "red line" threat) it matters little whether the president actually believes Assad will use chemical weapons or not.
