NATO’s war against Ukrainians opposed to the State Department installed regime is in serious trouble.

In addition to mounting casualties and desertions within the Ukrainian army a growing number of citizens are protesting against conscription imposed by the government.

In response authorities have promised to arrest anybody who uses social media to engage in political activism against the war. The order was issued by Anton Gerashenko, an advisor to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Virtually ignored by the establishment media in the West, the antiwar movement presents a serious obstacle for the regime following an order by the country’s recently elected president, Petro Poroshenko, to mobilize for a third effort to put down the rebellion.

An order issued on July 22 by the Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukraine Secretariat calls for conscription “of those liable for military service” as part of a “partial mobilization.”

The latest mobilization bill was introduced in the Ukrainian parliament by Andriy Parubiy, who was appointed to serve as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. Parubiy founded the neo-Nazi Social-National Party of Ukraine in 1991.

    Growing antiwar movement in Ukraine

“More fighting units are needed, the national treasury is effectively bankrupted by it all and there are rising numbers of desertions from the army and growing protests by mothers, wives, friends and neighbors of conscript soldiers,” writes Roger Annis.

“The expanding protests have multiple messages. Some oppose the war outright. Others are specifically addressing the harsh and dangerous conditions that soldiers are facing in the east.”

In mid-July the head of the Ukrainian Security Service, V.O. Nalyvaichenko, sent a letter to Poroshenko. Nalyvaichenko said “2/3 of the active combat military units currently participating in the ATO [Anti-Terror Operation] will simply cease to exist in as little as 4 to 5 days” due to mass desertions and casualties.

Arsen Avakov, Minister of Interior, and V. Gritsak, Head of the ATO, admitted the regime is losing the effort to defeat separatists. “We admit the possibility that all the fighters have been purged by the separatists,” they write in a report issued on July 9. A tally provided in the report states 1,600 regime soldiers killed, 4,723 wounded, 48 separatists killed, 64 wounded, and 496 civilians killed and 762 wounded.

According to The New York Times, however, the regime effort to defeat the separatists has resulted in 799 civilian deaths and 2,155 wounded. “The killings have left the population in eastern Ukraine embittered toward Ukraine’s pro-Western government, and are helping to spur recruitment for the pro-Russian militias,” the establishment newspaper reports.

In addition to the deaths a humanitarian crisis is emerging in Ukraine. Russia claims it is struggling with more than 500,000 refugees who have fled the fighting. Since June 4 more than 220,000 refugees have crossed the border from Ukraine to the Rostov region. Currently the influx continues at about 2,000 people per day, according to AFP.

    No Afghanistan in Ukraine!

Civil disobedience is on the rise in response to the war and the regime’s conscription order.
Beginning on July 25 in the port and shipbuilding city of Mykolaiv on the Black Sea near Odessa, mothers and wives of soldiers blocked the Varvarovsky Bridge over the Bug River for three days. They demanded a return of their sons and husbands from long tours of duty in the 79th Paratroop Regiment, according to this Ukrainian news website. The protest was put down police.

In the town of Bohorodchany in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast in southwest Ukraine on July 22, “farmers… protesting against the mobilization of their children and women in the Armed Forces” attacked a military registration office and other government buildings and burned conscription documents, according to Zik, a Ukrainian language website.

Also on July 22, residents of the village of Skobychivka linked arms and formed a human chain to block the road from Ivano-Frankivsk to Bohorodchany resulting in a traffic jam. “No Afghanistan in Ukraine!” placards read, a reference to the former Soviet Union’s humiliating defeat at the hands of the CIA’s mujahideen in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Roads were blocked around the country – in the Bukovina region, the Obukhivs’kyi district near Kyiv, in the Odessa region, in Marshintsi in the Novoselytskyy region of Chernivtsi, in the vicinity of the village of Hamaliivka near Lviv, in the villages of Rakoshyno and Znyatsevo, near the border of Slovakia and Hungary, and elsewhere.

“It is very important that people who speak out against the mobilization of the civilian population should see that they are not isolated. There are a great many of them,” a well-known Ukrainian television journalist and commentator, Ostap Drozdov, said as the protests grew.
“My program yesterday (on the regional television channel ZIK) can be considered the start of an informal campaign to boycott the mobilization. I state my intention to give my utmost support to this initiative, which goes by the provisional name ‘Mobilization Equals Genocide,’” he said.

United States Feeds the War Despite Opposition

Despite growing resistance by the people of Ukraine to the so-called ATO and the regime in Kyiv, the United States is making sure the slaughter continues.
“The United States must stand with Ukraine as they fight for the right to chart their own future,” Senator Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, posted Friday on his website. “While economic and political support is vital, the goals this aid is designed to achieve will be impossible if the Ukrainian military cannot restore law and order and deter future aggression. We must provide Ukrainians with the military capabilities they need to protect their country and fulfill the promise of the Maidan.”
The State Department, largely responsible for installing the Kyiv regime, and the Pentagon have called for Congress to approve nearly $20 million in military assistance to Ukraine. So far the U.S. has committed $23 million to the regime’s military.
Republicans claim the Obama administration is not doing enough to defeat the separatists.
“It’s a cowardly act on our part not to give the Ukrainians any defensive weapons,” said Arizona Republican Senator John McCain. “They’ve been begging us for weapons with which to defend themselves, where perhaps they could have defeated these separatists.” McCain, however, did not address the fact there is growing opposition to the war by the very people who the regime and congressional Republicans expect to fight and die. No amount of expensive military hardware and training will benefit the Poroshenko government if large numbers of Ukrainians resist and soldiers continue to desert.
