UPDATE: Furniture plant to reopen after shooting

Gun found next to man's body

    by Ben MiddelkampStaff reporter

MONTICELLO — Two men and a woman are dead after a shooting Tuesday morning at a furniture plant in White County.

White County Sheriff Patrick Shafer said at approximately 11:30 a.m., the county communications center received news of a shooting in the parking lot of Jordan Manufacturing, 1200 S. Sixth St., right outside the city limits of Monticello.

Officers from the White County Sheriff's Department and Monticello Police Department found a Hispanic man lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound, Shafer said. He also said they found a handgun and a box next to the man. The police retrieved the gun from the scene.

Police saw another Hispanic man in a driver's seat as well as a Hispanic woman in a passenger seat of a brown four-door passenger car with the window down parked right next to the subject on the ground. Both also appeared to have gunshot wounds, Shafer said.

Shafer said the Monticello Fire Ambulance Service transported the woman shortly after arriving to IU Health White Memorial Hospital, about a half-mile away from the scene. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, Shafer said.

The two male subjects were pronounced dead at the scene, Shafer said.

"The police are not actively seeking out other persons of interest at this time," Shafer said. Police are still conducting interviews and notifying family members of the victims.

Shafer added that the sheriff's office doesn't expect to release the names until Wednesday morning.

White County Sheriff, Monticello police, Indiana State Police, White County prosecutor and the White County Coroner's office continue to investigate.

Jordan Manufacturing is connected to the Furniture Warehouse Outlet. The shooting occurred during operating hours.

The family-owned company has been in Monticello since 1975 and moved into the facility on Sixth Street in 2007, according to the company's website. Jordan Manufacturing is a drop ship vendor and makes patio furniture, patio cushions, patio umbrellas as well as other furniture products.

According to the company's twitter account — @jordanmfg — it will open Wednesday "to anyone that would like to work." The tweet also stated counseling services will be available.

Witness: 3 shot at Jordan Manufacturing

WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) — Three people are dead after a shooting at a White County business. One witness tells News 18 what happened inside Jordan Manufacturing.

Authorities were called to Jordan Manufacturing, 1200 S. Sixth St., in Monticello on a report of shots fired late Tuesday morning. One witness, Maria Villagrana, told News 18 via her daughter, also named Maria Villagrana, what occurred inside the furniture manufacturing business.

The shooter walked into the office here with a box wrapped like a present with a bow. He asked for his ex-wife. People working inside told him that his ex-wife was out for lunch. Maria said she was on her break outside talking on her phone.

Maria saw the shooter hiding behind a tree next to the office. When the ex-wife and her boyfriend, who was driving, pulled into the parking lot Maria started to walk over to her to tell her that her ex-husband was there. That’s when the ex-husband walked up to the car.

The vehicle’s windows were down and he said hello to them both and something like “what do you think?” Maria said he had a handgun in his hand, put his hand inside the car, shot the boyfriend, then his ex-wife, then himself.

Maria said she started screaming and ran inside saying “they just got killed.” Maria said the ex-wife and her boyfriend met while working at Jordan.

The ex-husband did not work there.

Maria has known the ex-wife since February. Maria said normally she sits in her car while on the phone, but was trying to talk to the woman.

Maria’s car was hit with one of the bullets. Maria said they thought the ex-husband was delivering flowers, but says she thinks that’s where the gun was hidden.

White County Sheriff Pat Shafer told News 18 the ex-husband and the boyfriend died on the scene. The woman was taken to IU White Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Shafer said they are not releasing the names of persons involved at this time. He did confirm detectives found a box and a handgun on scene, but no further information has yet been released.

News 18’s Holly Campbell will continue to follow this story and will have more information coming up live on News 18 at Five and Six.
