In Lakewood, Washington, a 20-year-old soldier named Tevin Geike was stabbed to death in a parking lot. According to reports, he was walking along the Pacific Highway SW with two other white soldiers when a group of black men drove by and yelled at the group.
Allegedly, the men driving by were yelling racial slurs, and when one of the soldiers responded, the car turned around. Then, the driver of the vehicle recognized that they were fighting soldiers.
One of the suspects bumped into Geike, and the soldiers saw him fall to the ground. Meanwhile, the car sped away into the distance. Geike bled to death from multiple stab wounds.
“He was already dead in my brother’s arms,” Glenn Zimmerman, a friend of Geike, told reporters.

The group of soldiers had been at a party that night, celebrating the end of Geike’s contract, and honoring his service to his country.
“I don’t understand how someone can do this—that man, he almost gave his life for people to enjoy the freedoms they have and he was just stabbed for no reason,” Zimmerman continued.
Given the racial implications of the incident, investigators are considering whether the killing is classified as a hate crime. In the meantime, Police are searching for the vehicle and the five suspects, all five of whom are black men in their 20s.

The white soldier who was killed by three black comrades on Saturday morning 'died like a dog' a friend has said, as an autopsy revealed he was stabbed fatally through the heart.
Spc. Tevin Geike, 20, and two friends had been walking away from a confrontation with another group of soldiers in Lakewood, Washington when he was allegedly stabbed by Jeremiah Hill, 23.

Geike suffered a deep stab wound to his chest that cut through a rib and plunged through his heart following a confrontation near Tacoma, Washington, the autopsy showed.

'He died like a dog,' Kimberly Turnipseed, whose daughter was friends with Geike, told ABC News outside the courtroom for Hill's arraignment on Tuesday. The women were pictured sobbing in court.

The soldiers charged in the case made their first court appearance on Tuesday in Pierce County Superior Court. Hill, who joined the Army just six months ago, was charged with first-degree murder.

Authorities also charged Cedarium Johnson, 21, and Ajoni Runnion-Bareford, 21, with rendering criminal assistance, saying they aided in disposing of the murder weapon.

The suspects and victim were all soldiers at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Geike, from Summerville, South Carolina, was walking with two other soldiers, Matthew Barnes and Brian Johnson, back to their base early on Saturday when a car of five people drove past them.
Barnes told KIRO TV that one man in the back shouted 'something like white and cracker' - racist term for a white person.

Barnes said he shouted back: 'So this is how we treat combat veterans now?'
The car turned around and came back and five men got out, surrounding the three friends.

Prosecutors said the groups were separating after realizing they were all active duty soldiers when Geike was fatally stabbed.
One of the men allegedly walked up to Tevin and 'appeared to bump' or 'bear hug' him and stabbed him multiple times, the friend said.

Barnes said: 'I was sitting there, holding my hand on his chest and then called 911 with my left, screaming at them and telling them exactly where we were and they need to hurry and hurry and hurry. Right before I got off the phone, I couldn't feel a heartbeat anymore, and he was gone.'
He added that the men were 'looking for trouble. They were looking for somebody to attack'.

Witness: Matthew Barnes said one of the attackers appeared to 'bump' into Tevin as he stabbed him multiple times as they were walking home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord on Saturday morning

Barnes said: 'There’s a derogatory term they use for white people, and it's cracker, and I heard that phrase repeated numerous times which is why I thought race had something to do with it.'
KOMO reported that detectives identified the suspects after another soldier came forward and said that Hill had told him he had killed somebody.
The soldier told his sergeant who spoke to Hill but he denied it and claimed he had been cutting vegetables. Then when he was taken to hospital he claimed he hurt it on a parachute cord.
Prosecutors said the suspects eventually discarded the knife into brush and investigators believe they have found the weapon.
Despite witnesses reporting that they heard the men use racist terms, police have said that the incident was not a hate crime.

Arrested: Ajoni Runnion-Bareford, 21, was one of the three soldiers held over the killing of Tevin

In the hours after the stabbing, police said they believed the attack was racially motivated because it was claimed some of the assailants called Tevin a 'cracker', a racist term for a white person.

But Lakewood police officers later said they no longer believed the killing to be a hate crime following the arrests and speaking to everyone they believed were involved.
Tevin's mother Jennifer Rose fought back the tears as she spoke to MailOnline about her son.

She said: 'Tevin trusted everybody until they gave him a reason not to trust them. He was really kind-hearted and he would give you the shirt off your back.
'He absolutely loved being in the military and was looking forward to graduating. He wanted to be an oil rigger.'
Mrs Rose, 39, added, that there was 'no way' that Tevin would have said anything racist to provoke his killer.

Tevin was originally from Junction City, Kansas, but grew up in South Carolina and graduated from Stall High School near Charleston in 2010.
He joined the Army two years ago, according to Army records, and at Joint Base Lewis-McChord he was assigned to the 4-6th Attack Reconnaissance Squadron, 16th CAB, as an aviation operations specialist. In October 2011, he was reassigned to the 2-158th AHB.
During his service Tevin has been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Aviation Badge.
On his Facebook page, Tevin spoke of his love for his country - and how he would die to protect it.
He said: 'Damn straight service members are dying everyday for our freedom and yet what thanks do they get not a damn thing. I am a soldier in the United States Army and proud of it.'

Deadly Washington 'hate crime' revealed as soldier-on-soldier killing: cops

Army Spc. Tevin Geike celebrated the end of his service the night of the attack. Fellow soldiers told Lakewood cops black men in a car yelled 'cracker' at them as the combat vets walked home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Police say the attackers were fellow servicemen.

Washington cops have busted three men accused in the fatal stabbing of a soldier — and police say the suspects are soldiers too.
Authorities originally investigated the killing as a hate crime because the dead soldier was white, and the attackers reportedly yelled "cracker" before the stabbing. Further investigation revealed that may not be the case.
Army Spc. Tevin Geike and two friends were walking early Saturday morning in Lakewood when they encountered the men.
Soldier Matthew Barnes told KIRO TV he yelled back:
“So this is how we treat combat veterans now?”

The car turned around. Five men hopped out and surrounded the three soldiers. The two groups argued, police said, but the driver called it off when he learned the soldiers were combat vets.
They headed back to the car, but one man “appeared to bump” Geike, police said.
Geike collapsed to the pavement bleeding. He’d been stabbed in the heart.
Cops now say the attackers were fellow servicemen at Joint Base Lewis-McChord sout of Tacoma. A sergeant contacted police on Sunday after another soldier came forward, KIRO reported. The soldier claimed 23-year-old Jeremiah Hill asked him for help, telling him he'd cut his hand while stabbing a guy to death. The sergeant confronted Hill who reportedly claimed he cut his hand while chopping vegetables.
KIROTV Barnes and Geike recently had matching ‘BROTHERS’ tattoos inked into their arms.
Hill was treated at Madigan Hospital for the cut and allegedly told the staff yet another story: He sliced his hand while cutting parachute cord.
Another soldier, who was in the car with Hill, told cops a similar version of the story reported by Geike's friends: They exchanged words with the white soldiers but backed off when they learned they were all servicemen — all except for Hill who bear hugged Geike before he fell to the ground.
It was only when Hill got back into the car that they realized he was covered in the blood.
Barnes told cops he saw the men drive off in a dark blue BMW or Volkswagen as he cradled his dying friend.
KIROTV Friends, including Barnes (with flag), pay their respects to Geike at a roadside memorial at the scene of the fatal attack.
“I’m sitting here holding him, trying to stop the bleeding with my right hand and calling 911 with my left, screaming at them and trying to get them here,” Barnes said. “Right before I got off the phone, I couldn’t feel a heartbeat anymore, and he was gone.”
Police searched Hill's barracks and seized a car they believe was used in the attack. Cops also arrested 21-year-olds Cedarium Johnson and Ajoni Runnion-Bareford.
Hill refused to talk to detectives and asked for a lawyer, cops said.
Police originally said they suspected the killing was a hate crime. They backed off on Tuesday, saying that now doesn't seem to be the case.
KIROTV Blood on the ground marked the spot where Geike was fatally stabbed early Saturday morning.
Geike, originally from South Carolina, joined the Army in 2010 and was stationed in 2011 at the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, south of Tacoma. He was trained as an aviation operations specialist.
Geike had celebrated his impending discharge from the Army earlier in the night at the Biltmore Motel, friends said.
“I don’t understand how someone can do this,” friend Glenn Zimmerman told KOMO News. “That man — he almost gave his life for people to enjoy the freedoms they have and he was stabbed for no (expletive) reason,” Zimmerman said.
As news of the attack spread to party goers, Zimmerman raced to his friend’s side. He said Geike was already dead.
KIROTV Barnes says he tried to stop the bleeding with one hand as he called 911 with the other, but Geike died in his arms.
“What was it all over — just because they were some white boys?” Zimmerman said.
