L.A. News Outlet: Fukushima plume worries to sink fishing industry? Area newspapers “warning readers to avoid eating locally-caught fish”

Published: April 17th, 2014 at 10:13 am ET
    By ENENews

Neon Tommy (L.A.-based news source, USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism), Apr. 16, 2014: Could Radiation Fear Sink The Fishing Industry? — Fisherman Mike McCorkle has been fishing for 60 years and contends that he may be facing his biggest challenge yet. In the past few months he says that Korean newspapers in the L.A area have been warning their readers to avoid eating locally-caught fish. The Korean press claims that locally-caught fish contain radiation. [...] Woods Hole Institute of Oceanography [sic] [...] confirmed that a plume of radiation from Fukushima will arrive on the American West coast in April [...] Although the science refutes any danger from consumption of Pacific fish [See: Expert: Cancer increase for West Coast from Fukushima exposures; No safe dose of radiation] some still retain a fear of radiation. Santa Barbara’s Seagrass Restaurant no longer serves Pacific fish. [...] One source of [the head chef's] fear is because he subscribes to the independent news site ENE News, which compiles negative news on Fukushima and its effects on seafood. [...]
Robert Perez, Seagrass Restaurant’s head chef: I have heard too many stories of starfish melting and the collapse of the sardine, salmon, anchovy, squid and oyster industries in the Pacific to be comfortable preparing them.
Isaac Maya, Director of Research at USC’s Homeland Security Center: One ten ounce serving of Blue fin Tuna that swum from Japan to the United States contain one nanosievert of radiation. By comparison one banana contains 100 nanosieverts. [See: Expert: Cesium-137 found in tuna emits 10,000,000 times more radiation per unit volume than banana's potassium-40]
    Transcript Excerpts

    • 0:30 in — Perez: I feel that there is a good possibility that the seafood is contaminated. I just don’t want that on my conscience that I have been feeding people contaminated fish.
    • 1:00 in — Byron Tseng, reporter: Although radiation originating from Fukushima has been detected in locally caught tuna, experts say there is nothing to worry about.
    • 1:15 in — Maya: It is unlikely that any fish that swims in the diluted water will absorb enough radiation to cause a problem.
    • 1:30 in — Rex Ito, tuna importer: It is not a health issue at all.
    • 1:45 in — Tseng: Experts predict the plume of radiation from Fukushima will arrive this month, but people in the fishing industry assure us that seafood with a side of radiation will not be on the menu.

Mistake at Congressional Hearing? Senator: “Radioactive releases from WIPP have been at levels that are a public health danger” — EPA: “This is a big deal” (VIDEO)

Published: April 17th, 2014 at 5:59 pm ET

Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Department of the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies, published Apr. 9, 2014 (at 3:00 in):

    • Sen. Tom Udall, New Mexico: I appreciate that many in your agency have made it clear that the radioactive releases from WIPP have been at levels that are a public health danger and I’m hopeful that you’re monitoring and verification will continue to support their unfortunately the facts are the two accidents have happened to WIPP that we’re not supposed to happen — a fire in a mine and a radiological release. DOE oversight has already been found to be lacking and that’s why it’s important to the community that an independent public health agency like EPA be on the ground overseeing the recovery phase to ensure public health is protected. [...]
    • Gina McCarthy, EPA Administrator: EPA’s main job in this is to ensure that we’re looking at any level that could have been exceeded in terms of protectiveness to the outside, so that the surrounding communities are aware of any concerns [...] So far, it looks like any release has been far below any levels that are necessary for protection [...] We know people have concerns, this is a big deal.

While checking if there were any other reports on this topic, a website Mining Awareness Plus was found. Here’s an excerpt from a recent post (emphasis added): Now we imagine that [Sen. Udall] didn’t mean to say that. But, he spoke the truth whether he knew it or not. The WIPP released plutonium and americium, which are long-lived alpha emitters, which can stay in the body for a lifetime. They thus bioaccumulate upon inhalation and ingestion, and even absorption. That is the hidden, dirty, secret. [...] The BEIR VII report is well-known for its Linear No-Threshold Model (LNT), i.e. no safe dose: “the risk of cancer proceeds in a linear fashion at lower doses without a threshold and that the smallest dose has the potential to cause a small increase in risk to humans.” However, BEIR only “focuses on the health effects of low levels of low linear energy transfer (low-LET) ionizing radiation such as x-rays and gamma rays.” And, as pointed out “Most radiation sources have a mixture of high- and low-LET radiation. Compared to high-LET radiation [Alpha radiation is high LET; beta and gamma radiation are low LET], low-LET radiation deposits less energy in the cell along the radiation path and is considered less destructive per radiation track.”

NHK Special: Extremely toxic water 4,000,000 times gov’t limit in trenches between Fukushima reactors and ocean — Experts: “Source of contamination for Pacific” — “Levels too high for them to get more precise look at situation” — Reporter: Plutonium leaked out after fuel rods damaged (VIDEO)

Published: April 18th, 2014 at 1:36 pm ET
    By ENENews

NHK’s Newsline FOCUS: Inside Fukushima Daiichi, Mar. 29, 2014 (at 18:15 in): A network of trenches runs between the reactor buildings and the shore. They are flooded with extremely radioactive water that’s been trapped** there since the triple meltdown. Tepco data shows concentrations of cesium up to 4 million times above the government safety limit. Engineers estimate that the trenches hold about 15,000 tons of toxic water but radiation levels are too high for them to get a more precise look at the situation. Some experts point out these trenches are a source of contamination for the Pacific Ocean. Tepco says there’s no evidence of that yet, but it recognizes the need to act quickly.
**Yomiuri Shimbun, Mar. 6, 2014: “It appears that high-level radioactive contaminated water from tunnels [trenches] extending from the No. 1 to No. 4 reactor building is flowing into the sea.”
Extreme contamination in the trenches was first reported exactly 3 years before NHK’s special above — NHK, Mar. 28, 2011 (h/t MsMilkytheclown):

    • At 0:30 – Tepco: “Now we have found water in the section between the underground area of the building and the sea in the area called the trench.” Workers detected contamination in the trench on Sunday [Mar. 27]. They recorded more than 1,000 millisieverts per hour on the water’s surface. […] Tepco says it’s unlikely the water is leaking into the ocean […] Tepco had no intention of hiding it.
    • At 4:15 — Yoshiyuki Yamazaki, NHK: Of the Reactors 1-3, one, or more, or all, have likely sustained damage to their nuclear fuel rods. Which is why iodine, cesium, and plutonium are leaking out. […] Tepco mentioned they don’t think the current level will affect human health […] We have to be very careful. Compared to iodine and cesium, plutonium would have a substantially larger adverse effect on health if taken into the human body.

Out of control: Fukushima manager admits to ‘embarrassing failure’

The manager of the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant has admitted not having full control of the facility. Contrary to the statements of the Japanese PM, TEPCO’s Akira Ono said attempts to plug the leaks of radioactive water had failed.
"It's embarrassing to admit, but there are certain parts of the site where we don't have full control," Ono told reporters touring the plant this week, reported Reuters. Last year, the Japanese PM attempted to assure the world that the situation at the stricken nuclear power plant was under control.

However, over the last couple of months the clean-up procedure at the plant has been fraught with difficulties.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), the plant’s operator, has consistently faced contaminated water leaks at the Fukushima plant.

Water has to be pumped over the facilities stricken reactors in order to keep them from overheating, but this process creates large quantities of contaminated water which has to be stored in tanks on the site.

Ono acknowledged to press that in TEPCO’s rush to deal with the stricken facility following the earthquake-triggered tsunami in 2011, the company may have made mistakes.

“It may sound odd, but this is the bill we have to pay for what we have done in the past three years,” he said. “But we were pressed to build tanks in a rush and may have not paid enough attention to quality. We need to improve quality from here.”

TEPCO will have to improve the quality of the tanks so the plant can survive the next 30-40 years of the decommissioning process, Ono went on to say.

The plant’s manager said that the number one aim was to keep the radioactive water from getting into the ocean.

“The ultimate purpose is to prevent contaminated water from going out to the ocean, and in this regard, I believe it is under control,” Ono said. But a series of leaks have obliged officials to “find better ways to handle the water problem.”

In the latest blunder at the plant, TEPCO mistakenly flooded the Fukushima facility’s basements with radioactive cooling-tank water. Earlier this week the Japanese newspaper the Asahi Shimbun reported that around 200 tons of water had found its way into waste disposal facilities under the power plant. TEPCO said they were working to fix the leakage as soon as possible.

Cleaning up Fukushima is becoming an increasing headache for the Japanese authorities. Experts predict that fully decommissioning the stricken plant is a process that could take decades, costing the country billions of dollars.

Following the multiple meltdown of the Fukushima plant in 2011 that was triggered by a tsunami, the Japanese government pledged to abandon nuclear power by 2010. However, in spite of public outrage, the government was forced to reactivate its nuclear power plants because of massive energy shortfalls.

Concerned officials now considering ban on Japan food items — Nuclear scientists previously told gov’t to halt all imports after finding high radiation levels — Never implemented due to fear of hurting bilateral relationship

The Nation, Apr. 18, 2014: Pakistan may ban Japan edible items [...] in case if traces of radioactive material are found on them. Federal Minister of Commerce Khurum Dastgeer Khan told the Senate on Thursday, currently the Ministry of National Food Security and Research is tasked to conduct thorough research to determine either the edible items from Japan were infected by radioactive rays or not. [...] Senator Suriya Amiruddin who was interested to know whether there is any proposal under consideration of the Government to impose ban on import of edible items from Japan to avoid negative effect of radiation in those items. [...] in April 2011, Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority had directed authorities dealing with Cargo arriving directly or indirectly from Japan to screen all types of consignments including edible/non-edible, for radiation. [...] The directives were issued from the country’s well-reputed institution Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority [...] The PNRA made clearance mandatory for every consignment being imported from Japan. It is worthy of mentioning here that country’s nuclear scientists had advised the federal government three years back to halt all types of goods from Japan to minimize the threat of radiation following the Fukushima Nuclear Crisis in Japan. The scientists had advised the government after they detected high level of Iodine from the consignments imported from Japan. [...] in view that the move to ban imports from Japan may hurt bilateral relationship between the two friendly countries, the Pakistani government never imposed ban on import of goods from Japan.
Khurum Dastgeer Khan, Federal Minister of Commerce: “Concerned officials have been advised to investigate the matter relating to import of edible items from Japan following the incident of radioactivity in Japan. It is up to Ministry of Food Security and Research to advise Ministry of Commerce to continue import of edible items from Japan or impose ban on it.”

NBC Bay Area, Apr. 18, 2014: Seals and sea lions in California are turning up sick or injured at a record pace this year. Sausalito’s Marine Mammal Center has more animals in its care right now than ever before in its 39-year history. There are three factors at play: First of all, this is the time of year when pups get stranded or separated from their mothers for an unknown reason. Also last year’s sea lion epidemic sent malnourished, sick pups onto California shores at record levels. On top of that, a Monterey Bay algae bloom is making a lot of animals sick. Experts say it’s creating the worst kind of perfect storm.
NBC Southern California, Apr. 17, 2014: Scientists Worry Sea Lion Epidemic May Return [...] Marine scientists are worried about the increasing number of sick, often severely malnourished, sea lions showing up at a San Pedro care facility. [...] An increase in the number of stranded sea lion pups in Southern California has scientists and marine mammal experts asking the question, “Could it be happening again?” [...] The center was caring for more than 200 mammals Thursday, most of them California sea lion pups. [...] During a normal year, in comparison, the center takes in about 250 animals total. [...] Experts hope what they were dealing with last year was an anomaly rather than a new normal for California’s sea lion pup population.
Kaitlin Rixon, National Marine Mammal Foundation volunteer: “Right now, when we are doing intake, we are seeing the sea lion pups to be around 20 pounds. They should be around 50 pounds, so they are severely malnourished.”
David Bard, director of Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro: “It was definitely linked to food availability or the distribution of their normal food source last year.[...] Is it related to human activity along the coastline [...] or is it something of a natural source?”
Jeff Boehm, Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito: The numbers are extraordinary [...] “Out of the gates this year, it’s a record-setting pace. We don’t know what May is going to bring us yet. We don’t what June is going to bring us yet. We’ve had peaks of activity as late as October.”

Interview with Katsutaka Idogawa, former mayor of Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture, April 21, 2014:
    At 9:30 in

    • Katsutaka Idogawa, former mayor of Futaba in Fukushima Prefecture: There are still about 2 million people living in the prefecture, who have all sorts of medical issues. The authorities claim this has nothing to do with the radiation fallout from Fukushima. I demanded that the authorities substantiate their claim in writing, but they ignored my request. There are some terrible things going on in Fukushima. […] The biggest problem is that there is no one to help us. […] I talked to local authorities in different places in Fukushima, but no one would listen to me. They believe what the government says, while in reality radiation is still there — and it is killing children. They are dying of heart conditions, asthma, leukemia, thyroid complications. Lots of kids are extremely exhausted after school, others are simply unable to attend PE classes. But the authorities are still hiding the truth from us, and I don’t know why. Don’t they have children of their own? It hurts so much to know they can’t protect our children.

    At 22:30 in

    • Sophie Shevardnadze, host: The United Nations report on the radiation fallout from Fukushima says no radiation-related deaths or acute diseases have been observed among the workers and the general public exposed. So it’s not that dangerous after all? Or is there not enough information available to make proper assessments?
    • Idogawa: This report is completely false. The report was made by a representative of Japan – Professor Hayano. Representing Japan, he lied to the whole world from the UN podium. When I was mayor, I knew many people who died from heart attacks, and then there were many people in Fukushima who died suddenly, even among young people. It’s a real shame that the authorities hide the truth from the whole world, from the UN. We need to admit that actually many people are dying, we are not allowed to say that, but TEPCO employees also are dying. But everyone is keeping mum about it.

Red Ice Radio, Apr. 7, 2014 (at 6:30 in):

    • John B. Wells, top-rated host of the most-listened-to overnight program in history ‘Coast to Coast AM’ until January 2014: My problem is, I was not looking at the scoreboard […] I did not realize the level of listenership — on a Saturday night [which Wells hosted] — 750,000 to 1.2 million. Compared with 275,000 to 300,000 on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday […] sometimes the listenership on a Saturday night was more than the combined total of the entire work week, and this was not helpful politically. [...]
    • Henrik Palmgren, Red Ice Radio host: […] This is ultimately what led to your termination on Coast?
    • Wells: I think so. As a matter fact, ENENews — you know them — they actually had a couple of articles […..., and I did say it, “Radiation shows are scary and the numbers go down and nobody really wants to hear radiation.” And I’m like, “Listen, this is a potential planet killer.” “Oh, do you really think so?” “Oh, absolutely I think so.” The reason that the world is not rushing to the aid of Japan is because there’s nothing that can be done, I mean that we know of now, unless it’s some off-planet intervention or divine intervention — there is some real trouble over there. And it’s just getting worse and worse […] It’s just awful. But, “Oh no, don’t talk about that.” And I did anyway. If there’s any creativity [inside someone], you can’t help but to try to make your spot your own. If you try to appeal to everyone, you just appeal to no one. So I thought, “Okay, no formulas here — let’s just wait until the imaginary red light comes on, and at the end the program we’ll find out if it was a good one or not so good.” I just played it from that angle and it worked out pretty well. They didn’t want Fukushima talked about a lot — but eventually it became undeniable. Even [Coast to Coast's weekday host] started talking about it quite a lot. Because it’s a horror, it’s a tragedy – Japan, in my opinion, is gone.
    • Palmgren: […] We know this about mainstream media already — but it’s sad to realize that it encroaches into this territory as well, where the paranormal and things like that is okay, but then if you walk it a bit further into the political trenches, it becomes somewhat of a picky topic […] Censorship is so active, despite the United States having a very long and proud tradition of free speech and people being able to talk about what they want to, right?
    • Wells: I agree with you completely. It’s almost as though now, the only thing that’s safe to talk about is that which cannot be proved. And as long as you can remain nebulous and theoretical then fine, but don’t let any facts interfere with a good story.
