Nicholas S. Fisher, ‘Distinguished Professor’ at Stony Brook Univ. — Fukushima Radioactivity in the Pacific and Risks to Marine Life and Humans, Sept. 19, 2013, Published July 15, 2014:

    • 5:00 in — It resulted in a release of large quantities of radioactivity into the Pacific Ocean, and ever since has scared the ‘bejesus’ out of everybody in the world. This is quite remarkable, over 2 years later, it’s virtually every day I get calls from reporters and TV and print media and radio from around the world, every day, asking about issues on Fukushima. So it’s still very much on people’s minds, and I’m here to… hopefully comfort some concerns or anxieties you might have about Fukushima.
    • 8:45 in — There was all of a sudden, a tremendous — orders of magnitude higher, of cesium-137 from Fukushima — orders of magnitude higher. People use terms like ‘orders of magnitude’ — they’re very flippant about it, and they think nothing of it. Just to give you an idea… Two orders of magnitude is you’re walking speed and a jet plane flying overhead. An order of magnitude is a big deal; this is many orders of magnitude greater release of cesium-137 from Fukushima.
    • (Part 2) 12:30 in — PHOTO CAPTION: “Still a work in progress… stay tuned.” It is still leaking and we don’t know what the radioactivity is now. We just completed a couple cruises off Japan, so we’re analyzing fish from there. And we also collected Bluefin tuna that arrived in California.
    • (Part 2) 13:45 in – It’s clearly detectable in tuna in California coastal waters… below levels that we think would have any discernible effect
    • (Part 2) 21:45 in — Sure enough every single fish without exception was radioactive. Every single one. They were all like clones of each other… all the same [levels of radioactive cesium from Fukushima].
    • (Part 2) 24:00 inQ: Are you concerned at all about the bio-accumulation over time? A: Yes. We focus a lot on that. We focus on the trophic transfer from one trophic load to another.

Bio-accumulation of Fukushima’s radioactive contamination is a recognized concern, however, little is mentioned about accumulation of Fukushima’s radioactive contamination. Recall this statement from Hidehiko Nishiyama of Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency: “Contaminated water leaked from the Unit 2 may have gathered as a lump and drifted offshore. We need to continue monitoring it.”
See also: Senior Scientist: I’m very concerned about sea life on West Coast accumulating radioactive material; Some contamination will arrive in concentrated pockets
And: Professor: New studies show radioactive materials being carried across Pacific relatively intact from Fukushima -- On West Coast we need to monitor these pockets of high contamination -- Parts of areas may be affected in a significant way (AUDIO)

Fox: Fukushima radioactive material still being found in U.S. soil — Japan Gov’t: The disaster “posed radiation threat to human society”… In 4 days “detectable all across northern hemisphere” — Denmark: Fukushima clearly had widespread consequences, not limited to borders (VIDEOS)

National Institute of Radiological Sciences (Japan), March 3, 2014: The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident led to the release of large amounts of radionuclides into the environment. [...] The released radioactive materials posed radiation threat to human society. Thus, source identification of radioactive contamination and long-term environmental behavior of released radioactive materials are important issues of study after the FDNPP accident.
Japan Atomic Energy Agency & University of Tokyo, Apr. 10, 2014: By March 15, traces from the accident in Fukushima were detectable all across the northern hemisphere. By April 13, the associated radioactivity had spread to the southern hemisphere of the Asia-Pacific region and was clearly detectable at CTBT IMS stations located in Australia, Fiji, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea.
Danish Emergency Management Agency’s Carsten Israelson, Nordic Nuclear Safety Research’s 2013 Fukushima seminar (at 4:15 in): The accident in Fukushima… clearly showed that there are consequences that are widespread, and is not limited to borders… Nuclear accidents do happen! Nuclear accidents will likely have widespread consequences – for all of us. >> Watch presentation here
Fox 10 News — Phoenix, AZ, July 15, 2014: [Aubrey Godwin, director of Arizona Radiation Regulatory Agency] says radioactive material can still be found in Arizona soil from nuclear weapons testing in the 50′s and from Fukushima’s nuclear disaster in 2011. Despite that Godwin says there is no health concern.

Why Are Fukushima Engineers Creating Walls Of Ice Under A Contaminated Nuclear Plant?

    July 23, 2014

By Jonathan Bridge / Raw Story / July 21, 2014 / Engineers at Fukushima nuclear power plant have been trying to create a £185m ice wall to isolate contaminated water from mixing with groundwater. However, there has been a steady stream of news articles reporting on problems associated with the ...

Officials in U.S. report “very rare mutations” in Pacific sea life — “Never seen anything like this” — Photos show red crabs completely white, “shockingly bright blue… almost unnatural”, or with yellow legs — Environment “could play a role” — Also observed recently by Japan (VIDEO)

Nome Nugget (pdf), July 10, 2014: EXTRAORDINARY— Crab fisherman Frank MacFarland shows a rare blue-colored red king crab that he found in his commercial crabbing pots [...] According to ADF&G [Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game] biologists, the blue color is most likely a rare genetic mutation. Biologists also report rare occurrences of white red king crab.
ABC News, Jul 19, 2014: It is extremely unusual for red king crabs to be blue. Scott Kent, of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Nome, told the AP that blue crabs turn up “once in a blue moon.” He suspects the crab’s unusual coloring is the result of a mutation.
Anchorage Daily News, July 12, 2014 (emphasis added): Alaska The crab’s shell was a deep periwinkle, likely the result of a naturally occurring genetic mutation, Kent said. The rare discovery thrilled Norton Sound fishery managers and biologists in the Northwest Alaska city. [...] Justin Noffsker [assistant plant manager at the Norton Sound Seafood Center] said he’s never seen anything like this [...] In his 11 years with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Kent had never seen a blue red king crab either [...] In September, during a pot survey in Cape Nome, Kent saw his first white red king crab, another rare coloration believed to be caused by a genetic mutation. He has also recently seen piebald crabs, spotted with irregular patches of white. Another had a red carapace but yellow legs. All the variations are considered to be the kind of “normal, random, very rare” mutations that occur within animal populations, Kent said. The environment and the crab’s diet could play a role, he said, but he doubts it. [...] In January, wholesalers in Hokkaido, Japan, found [a blue-colored red king crab] in a Russian shipment.
Anchorage Daily News, July 12, 2014: a crab with a deep lavender shell [is] the likely result of a genetic mutation. It was a rare discovery, one that thrilled Norton Sound fishery managers and area biologists who said such sightings are few and far between.
KNOM, July 18, 2014: Onlookers have called it “shockingly bright blue,” “almost unnatural,” and “like that can’t possibly be real.” >> Full broadcast here

KGW (Portland, OR), July 29, 2014: Major anchovy die-off stinks up Seaside [...] Millions of anchovies have died […] [A]ccording to Seaside Aquarium spokeswoman Tiffany Boothe […] anchovy die-offs aren’t unusual, although this one did seem to have especially big numbers. […] Experts said this odd phenomenon happens about every ten years.
KPTV Transcript, July 29, 2014 — Witness #1: That’s crazy isn’t it? Craziest thing I’ve ever seen. Witness #2: That is a little strange.
Oregon Public Broadcasting, July 29, 2014: “It kind of looks like the apocalypse,” joked [Boothe.] Unsuspecting visitors and locals not armed with the actual cause of the event found the appearance of the fish coating the banks of the river to be a bit alarming. Several mentioned how “odd” and “creepy” it was to see so many dead anchovies for no apparent reason. One visitor said he had never seen anything like it.
OPB (Blog), July 31, 2014: [It's] a sign that the anchovy population is actually thriving [...] “this is a sign that the anchovies along our coastline are doing good” [said Boothe.]
Latin Post, July 29, 2014: Marine biologists indicate […] when there’s a high tide, an uncommon number of anchovies try to swim upstream, get stranded and either return to the ocean or get eaten by birds, said a report by USA Today. But, [Boothe said] the fish died this week because there wasn’t enough oxygen.
Nature World News, July 29, 2014: Boothe, a representative from Seaside’s Aquarium told local media that this [...] mass death is larger than many seen in the past.
KGW Transcript, July 29, 2014: Is it something we really need to worry about? [...] When you see it you cannot blame people for being alarmed [...] It is all the talk along the coast tonight. >> Watch broadcast here

[...] investigators said the paste-like substance is most likely something naturally created.
KSBW, July 28, 2014: Another fish kill, this time along Capitola […] State Fish & Wildlife aren’t 100% sure what caused this latest fish kill but they’re certain it wasn’t natural. […] A similar incident happened just ten days ago, when hundreds of thousands of white croaker fish washed up on Manresa State Beach. They’re likely unrelated. NOAA: “An open ocean issue shouldn’t cause that kind of a problem so we don’t know of any specific spill, any specfic release of any chemicals that would have caused it” […] Last Friday afternoon [Capitola Beach] was closed for two hours. A gooey substance was found floating in the water and health officials were contacted […] officials have not identified what that ‘gooey’ substance was other than it didn’t pose a threat to public health. >> Watch the KSBW broadcast here

Asahi Shimbun, July 31, 2014: University of Tokyo’s [...] team noted a surge in concentration of airborne radioactive cesium [...] in neighboring Miyagi Prefecture. The researchers said the findings show that radioactive materials were repeatedly released into the environment and reached extensive areas [...] the team placed a device to collect airborne dust at the town office of Marumori, 59 kilometers north-northwest of the stricken Fukushima plant [...] between December 2011 and December 2013 [...] there were eight cases in which the amount of radioactive cesium in the samples were at least 10 times higher than normal levels [...] reaching 50 to 100 times higher than normal levels. [...] A worker at the Fukushima plant said that TEPCO has not discussed any drastic measures, such as covering the reactor [...] “It will likely resume debris cleanup when criticism calms down,” the worker said.
NHK, Jul. 23, 2014: [M]ore than one trillion becquerels of radioactive substances were released [...] with an estimate that the removal work discharged 280 billion becquerels per hour of radioactive substances, or a total of 1.1 trillion becquerels. The plant is believed to be still releasing an average of 10 million becquerels per hour [...]
Asahi Shimbun, July 24, 2014: More than 1 trillion becquerels of radioactive substances were released into the environment during debris-clearing work at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant [...] over a period of four hours. [...] The estimates were made by monitoring results in downwind areas and also took into account that alarms for highly contaminated dust concentrations sounded for four hours. The precise amount of radioactive substances that leaked out of the plant site remains unclear [...]
Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, 2013:

    • The complexity of this disaster [includes] long-duration continuous release of radiation at an unknown rate
    • An accurate estimate [...] is necessary for scientists and government officials to make informed decisions that impact the estimation of long-term doses and the safety of people
    • Estimates include a large degree of uncertainty [about] environmental impacts, which significantly hamper the Japanese government’s ability to estimate doses and preserve the public’s safety
    • Information needs of the first responders and local and national decision makers span a broad time range extending from hours to months, even years, from the initiation of the incident
    • This incident highlights many of the challenges that must be overcome for decisions to be made in an event that has significant temporal variation [and] occurs over a long time frame
    • Scientific and engineering communities [...] are attempting to better understand the implications of this disaster [and] the constant evolution of the incident
    • Not only is the radiation release event constantly evolving, but so too are the weather conditions impacting the dispersion and fallout of radiation
    • Throughout an event of this type, the background radiation is also continually evolving as the various radioactive materials both decay and interact with the environment

Dept. of Energy – Carlsbad, NM Field Office (pdf), July 30, 2014: The purpose of this letter is to provide you [New Mexico Environmental Dept.] written notice that the Department of Energy [is] provisionally applying EPA Hazardous Waste Number (code) D001** for the characteristic of ignitability to some nitrate salt bearing waste containers that have been disposed at the WIPP facility. […] This affects up to 368 containers […] in the underground WIPP facility […] The Permittees plan to implement the [plan] to expedite closure of Panel 6 and Panel 7, Room 7 so that a potential release […] will not pose a threat to human health or the environment.
** “Significant fire risk due either to their low flash point, ability to self-combust and burn, or are able to combust or support combustion” -EPA hazardous waste specialist Daniel Stoehr
Reuters, July 26, 2014: A team of government investigators has turned its attention to Los Alamos in recent days […] to determine whether additional barrels are affected, said [New Mexico Senator Peter Wirth]. “We’re making progress in determining what happened. Now we are much more focused on the scope,” he said.
Minutes of the New Mexico Legislature (pdf), published June 26, 2014: In further explaining what occurred [at WIPP, NMED Secretary Ryan] Flynn said that the material holding the bags of magnesium oxide together that had been on top of the drums just disintegrated. By all indications, he added, the area got very hot very quickly […]
Carlsbad, NM Town Hall, July 24, 2014:

    • 37:30 in – Question: Is Dr. Hardy saying that radiation from contaminated ventilation system will continue to be released to the environment periodically? Russell Hardy, director of the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring & Research Center: That is Dr. Hardy’s assumption… we will probably see spikes at Station B, as contamination… makes its way out of the repository.
    • 52:30 in – Hardy: We did receive additional funding from DOE to expand our ambient air sampling sites… very soon we will be deploying 3 additional ambient air sampling towers… one will be here in Carlsbad… we think those 3 additions will give us much better coverage in the future with respect to how this release — or the potential for future releases — may impact the area.
