Expert: “Significant health risks” over thousands of kilometers posed by Fukushima; Concern about rain affecting agriculture — Official data reveals West Coast lettuce had nearly 900 pCi/kg of radioactive material; ‘Most dangerous’ alpha radiation detected in rain (VIDEO)

Interview with Dr. Gerhard Wotawa, CTBTO Atmospheric Sciences Officer in the Radionuclide Development Unit and head of ZAMG’s (Austria) forecast models (emphasis added): “['Low levels' of radioactivity from Fukushima] can of course spread over all the areas of the world. But it will not pose any significant health risks beyond the immediate areas of the reactors, and some hundreds of kilometers to a few thousands of kilometers. So that means, for most areas of the world, it will be low levels of radioactivity… The rain would release the radiation from the atmosphere and will directly put it on the ground. The very long-lived radionuclides like the cesium will stay around there 20, 30, 40, and more years, and could affect the agriculture… The radionuclides, they can be easily washed of the atmosphere, and in the pathway from Japan to the Pacific Ocean, and across the Pacific Ocean, supposedly there will be precipitation of the rain and most of the particles will be removed by the rain… We assume that there’s a lot of radioactivity now coming into the water from the plant itself… In reality there may be some health effects, but it depends very much on the level of radioactivity that comes out of the atmosphere.”

Interview with Beverly Findlay Kaneko, evacuee from Yokohama, Japan, Social Uplift, published Sept. 14, 2014: A TV journalist named Mr. Masaki Iwaji, he was the only TV director to work on the Fukushima issue — the humanitarian problems and the corruption involved — and get it on national TV… He was found dead and there are rumors that it was suicide, but there is a lot of speculation that it was not. It is something that I’ve been thinking about quite a lot this week… His program, which is called ‘Hodo Station’, is a nightly news program that’s very popular. I would equate it to ‘60 Minutes’. That program has come under a lot of fire. The main anchor of that program, Mr. [Ichiro] Furutachi — who is extremely popular… it was rumored that he was in danger of losing his job for actually allowing these issues to be covered. Many of us are extremely upset to hear about Mr. Iwaji’s death. It’s very frightening. >> Watch segment here
Interview w/ Mrs. Kaneko, Nuclear Hotseat w/ Libbe HaLevy, Sept. 14, 2014 (emphasis added):

    • 5:00 in — Iwaji-san is the only journalist tackling the Fukushima issue in primetime. Whether he did it by his own hand or was murdered, it’s a tragic loss… He was responsible for this year’s 3/11 ‘Hodo Station’ coverage… It featured a mother of a cancer victim who agreed to appear with her face and voice disguised… His August 13th segment covered a sloppy decontamination job.
    • 9:00 in — [Iwaji's friend, journalist Noriyuki Imanishi] refers to an incident where [a] police investigator who appears to be in charge… butted Iwaji’s microphone with his elbow and knocked the reporter into the mud and caused injuries that required a visit to the hospital. [My husband] Yuji and I actually met Mr. Iwaji personally in January… and at that meeting he told us about the police incident.
    • 12:00 in – He was found dead having taken sleeping pills. He lit a cold briquette, he taped off the doors of a 3rd floor bedroom in his home, and this all happened in the middle of the summer heat… it was carbon monoxide poisoning.
    • 12:45 in — Yasushi Nishimuta, a freelance reporter, wrote about the circumstances of Iwaji’s death… An acquaintance of Nishimuta’s met Iwaji on August 27th, and that acquaintance said that Iwaji was his old self and he was planning to start tackling the Fukushima issue again in September. On the 28th, Iwaji called the TV station saying he didn’t feel well and he wouldn’t be in. Reportedly his speech was slurred… According to police reports he died on the 29th… Iwaji was going through a difficult time with [divorce related] court mandated arbitration which is often very difficult for the men involved.
    • 15:30 inThere has been no official news coverage of his death and no official mention on the ‘Hodo Station’ program and there was no obituary… after Iwaji’s death ‘Hodo Station’ anchor Ichiro Furutachi and his co-anchor appeared in all black on one evening broadcast… Also a strange caption appeared stating that, “Time for nuclear news has run out. Please accept our apologies.” The caption was strangely phrased and strangely punctuated… a play on words that took the sounds from his name and sort of combined them to — a lot of people think — to contrive this secret message.
    • 17:45 in – Some people mention promises to get together for drinks or snacks, and they’ve posted recent photos of the director enjoying himself at a pub. He had plans for future projects, including a segment on the Ronald Reagan sailors… Yuji and I met with him in December and we’ve been in touch with him by telephone and email. Chillingly, a photojournalist friend of ours… said that he and Iwaji reassured each other when drinking, “Whatever happens, I want you to know I will never commit suicide.” And this is the refrain by other people too, not just someone we happen to know firsthand.

Kyodo News (Part 11), Sept. 28, 2014 (emphasis added): Fearing a massive discharge of radiation on March 15, 2011, Fukushima No. 1 plant chief Masao Yoshida told [the Tepco] head office in Tokyo that he had to consider evacuating the majority of on-site employees. This followed a report at 6:14 am earlier in the day… suggesting the containment vessel had been damaged. Yet Tepco officials… did not share Yoshida’s sense of urgency, with one official saying it could just have been a pressure gauge glitch. Yoshida responded furiously. “It doesn’t make sense for us to remain when the radiation level rises!” he shouted as he hastily donned a white safety helmet… Yoshida, 56, strove to convey that the plant was in such a critical state that anything could happen… there was no area within the No. 1 plant where plant workers could stay for long because of alarming radiation levels
Kyodo News (Part 12), Sept. 28, 2014: There was no doubt that the fuel meltdown was worsening in reactor 2, in addition to the core meltdowns that had already occurred in reactors 1 and 3, as radiation levels at the plant were rising. But workers could do nothing more than maintain seawater injections to cool fuel [most of which leaked before entering the reactors, and water that did make it accelerated the melting process]… At 7:02 am, the level around the main gate reached 882 microsieverts per hour…
Kyodo News (Part 13), Sept. 28, 2014: At 9 a.m. on March 15… the radiation level at the plant’s main gate had reached a terrifying 11,930 microsieverts per hour, the highest reading measured outdoors… [As equipment restoration team leader Takeyuki Inagaki] and a colleague drove down the slope west of reactors 2 and 3, they saw flames and black smoke coming from the fourth floor of the reactor 4 building. Inagaki turned pale… “A fire has broken out at reactor 4. (We) can’t do anything. Please ask the Self-Defense Forces or U.S. military for help,” Yoshida pleaded with Tepco officials via a teleconference system at 9:39 amhigh radiation levels were also measured around the unit 4 building. “Is this going to be my graveyard?” [Tomoyuki Arai of Tepco’s firefighting unit] thought to himself… “The situation is not getting that much worse,” Yoshida [said]. Inagaki, the equipment restoration team chief, who joined the conversation, said radiation levels remained high… “we will quickly run out of people under this amount of radiation”… Yoshida said.
Toshiyuki Hayashida, 43, safety control team member, Sept. 28, 2014: Fearing he would not survive the escalating crisis, and at a loss for words, he [emailed his wife] just a single sentence: “Please take care of everything for me.” He then spoke by radio with two of his co-workers measuring radioactivity near the complex’s main gate. “If the radiation level soars, run for your lives”… [He] grabbed canned beef and… thought to himself, “This is going to be my last meal.”… [He] grabbed a spoonful… and realized he had lost his sense of taste.

Former IAEA Official: Actually Fukushima “is a catastrophe for every citizen of the world… radiation doesn’t recognize borders” — Dose from Fukushima fallout in Europe is many times higher than California gov’t reported for West Coast (VIDEO)
Published: October 5th, 2014 at 7:42 pm ET

Interview with Olli Heinonen, former IAEA deputy director general, former Finland Reactor Laboratory senior officer and senior fellow at Harvard University (at 3:00 in): “[We] have a potential catastrophe on our hands… I think that when this thing is over — this is certainly a national catastrophe for Japan — but actually this a catastrophe for every citizen of the world… Russians, Americans, they are also subject radiation. The radiation doesn’t recognize borders… It looks to be a very dire situation now.”

United Nations, 2014: Estimated doses in the first year following the [Fukushima] accident

    > Italy – [Annual] effective doses from external exposure, inhalation and ingestion of 131I, 134Cs, 137Cs

1-year-old estimated effective dose: 180 microsieverts
Adult estimated effective dose: 35 microsieverts
Ingestion of radionuclides in water was the major contributor of dose. Very conservative assumptions were applied as the highest concentration values measured for each radionuclide in rainwater were used to calculate the dose from ingested water.

    > Serbia — [One Month] effective doses from 131I concentrations in food, milk, air and rainwater

Adult estimated effective dose: 7.2 microsieverts
Ingestion of radionuclides in milk was the major pathway
[Dose from 134Cs and 137Cs not included]
    [External dose not included]

Hellenic Institute of Nuclear Physics Workshop, April 12, 2014: The data discussed in the present work includes the observations of Fukushima related radionuclides in Thessaloniki, Greece and Milan, Italy… The estimated committed doses for population related to the contributions of Fukushima fallout due to different pathways were at least one order of magnitude [about ten times] less of the limit of 1 [millisievert a year], even if the calculations are made using high conservative assumptions. In conclusion, radioisotopes of caesium and iodine were found above their detection limits in all environmental samples, but well below levels of concern.

Long range transport of Fukushima radioactive plume to Europe, Finland’s Meteorological Institute, Nuclear Physics Division of Aristotle University (Greece), University of Milan (Italy), April 12, 2014: The evaluation of the Effective Dose was done using the highest concentration value for 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs measured [in Italy] and are taken into account only the h(g) coefficients for population of age less than 1 year old [See table on right.]

Explosion at nuclear complex in Iran kills 2

    Published October 06, 2014 FoxNews.com

Two workers are dead after a fire and explosion at a military explosives facility that’s part of Iran’s Parchin nuclear complex, reports say.

The fire occurred in an "explosive materials production unit" Sunday, the BBC reported Monday, citing the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA).

A pro-opposition website reported a large blast near the Parchin military site, southeast of Iran’s capital Tehran, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Parchin has been linked to Iran's controversial nuclear program. Iran has denied the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to the complex since 2005.

Pro-reform website Sahamnews said the explosion was so intense, it shattered windows of buildings as far as 9 miles away.

"Unfortunately, due to the incident, two workers of this production unit lost their lives," ISNA reported, quoting Iran's defense industries organization.

    There were no further details.

The IAEA said in September that more activity had been conducted at the Parchin military base. It said Iran had also missed a deadline to answer further questions about its nuclear program.

Western countries suspected Iran of trying to develop a nuclear weapon but Iranian leaders insist they only want atomic energy. Iran claims Parchin is a conventional military facility and that its nuclear program is peaceful.

Iran is in negotiations with six world powers on a permanent agreement over its nuclear industry. Talks are focused on lifting Western sanctions in exchange for a scaling-back of Iran's uranium enrichment program. A deadline for the agreement has been set for November 24th.

Iran said a massive explosion at a military base 28 miles west of Tehran killed 17 Revolutionary Guards three years ago, including a leader of its elite force’s missile program. It said that the blast – which occurred while weapons were being moved-- was accidental, Reuters reported.

NHK WORLD, Oct 6, 2014: Rain flows into Fukushima nuclear plant — [TEPCO] says rainwater has flowed into some of the buildings at the facility. A typhoon brought very heavy rain to Fukushima on Monday. [TEPCO] says an alarm on Monday morning warned of a water leak in the turbine building of the No.1 reactor. Workers found rainwater pouring into the building from an exterior pipe. TEPCO officials say a water leak was also detected at the No.3 reactor building, adding that a camera captured images of rainwater pouring in. The officials say no radioactive water has been leaked outside.

Fukushima Daiichi worker @Happy11311, Google Translate, Oct 5 at 5:11p ET: Typhoon No. 18, the pattern of hit the 1F now. Typhoon hit like this time was perhaps the first time since the earthquakeexpected rainfall 150mm [6 inches] Hamadori of the day today. It’s rainfall to nearly twice the previous time, it was very heavy rain… The site, because there full of things worry, if you do not halt with minimal damage
Japan Times, Oct 6, 2014: [A] strong typhoon whipped through the Tokyo metropolitan area after making landfall further south, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to the Kanto region. More than 2 million people in eight prefectures were advised to evacuate from Typhoon Phanfone… The city of Shizuoka got 87 mm per hour in Aoi Ward, while Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, got 72 mm — both local records. The typhoon… was about 150 km east of Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture, the agency said, and… still packing gusts of up to 180 kph.

    Seawater testing project ramps up

Citizen scientists aid in tracking coastal radiation

A seawater testing project on BC’s coast is ramping up to record the arrival of Japanese radiation leaked into the sea from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster.

On March 11, 2011, the plant on the north east coast of Japan was hit by a tsunami triggered by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. Three of the six nuclear reactors at the plant went into meltdown and a day later started to leak radioactive material into the Pacific Ocean. It is known as the largest nuclear incident since Chernobyl in 1986.

Dr. Jay Cullen is a chemical oceanographer at the University of Victoria who is leading the three-year project.

Starting this month, Cullen and his team will be coordinating about 600 citizen scientist volunteers in 14 coastal communities who will be collecting seawater samples monthly to send to the lab.

“The project itself is building on the success of more modest testing programs the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) and Health Canada have been carrying out since the triple meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi in March 2011,” said Cullen.

DFO and Dr. John Smith have been making measurements in the north east Pacific and the Arctic oceans looking for radionucleotides from Fukushima in seawater, he said.

Cesium-137, a signature isotope of Fukushima, was first detected about 1,500 kilometres offshore in 2012. In June 2013 it was detected off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Cullen’s project will track the arrival of the plume of contaminated seawater being transported on North Pacific ocean currents.

“It’s to track its arrival and look for the maximum activities of these isotopes which will dictate what the risk is to the public,” Cullen said, adding that estimates suggest peak levels will reach BC during the next three years.

Scientist have measured low levels of radioactive material in seawater for decades.

“If you look at the activity of some of the isotopes which present the greatest health risks like Cesium-137 or Strontium-90 those levels peaked in the mid-1960s as a result of weapons testing,” said Cullen.

Currently there is only a slight trace of the chemicals from the disaster, he said.

“If you lived here in the 1970s or 80s the radioactivity of seawater and fish was likely greater than what we expect to be resulting from Fukushima,” he added.
