Enormous Military Ship Lands on a Crowded Beach in Russia

This crazy video of a Russian military hovercraft coming to land on a busy beach is making waves across the internet. Some believe that the video is a hoax, because people are just too mellow about this mega hovercraft pulling up to the sand. Others think it’s real and the Russians are just casual about this sort of thing. We’ve got the answer for you, so read on to hear the whole story and do take the time to watch this video.

The Action

This video is pretty quick so it’s the perfect thing to watch when you need a little break at work. The video opens on a crowded Russian beach on a hot day. There are families everywhere, tons of beach umbrellas, and a lot of scantily-clad Russians. At first you can’t see the hovercraft very well, because it’s creating a ton of sea spray. What you do notice at first is that the Russians don’t really seem to care so much about it. Most don’t even look up from their beach blankets. What’s strangest (and probably giving the hoaxers some fuel) is that the folks who are sitting directly in front of the hovercraft don’t panic and get out of the way. They just keep sitting there, at least in the angle of the video that we are able to see.
The first 28 seconds of this video proceed like that, and then we switch to a close-up of the hovercraft itself (more on that below). A crowd of about 50 people in the water and on the beach watch in amazement. The camera pans across the hovercraft, giving you plenty of time to see the entire thing up close. The camera stays over the massive hovercraft, allowing you to get a good look at its body, its giant fans, and its gun launchers.

Fake or Real?

This crazy scene actually happened, in August of 2013. The hovercraft was exploring on a tactical mission, Russian papers reported. It came to dock on the beach, claiming that this particular beach was in the middle of a military firing range and should have been empty of beachgoers. Russian newspaper Komosomolskaya Pravda contradicted this, claiming the military beach was miles away from the site of the beach landing.
The hovercraft shown in the video weighs 550 tons, was designed by Russian manufacturer Zubr, and is nicknamed The Bison. Its top speed is around 70 mph. The Bison is 196 feet long, and threw sea spray up at least that high in the air while it made its way toward the beach. After the craft came to shore, soldiers secured it with ropes and kept the general public away from the area. The hovercraft can fit 400 troops and comes equipped with missile launchers, automatic gun mounts, and other state-of-the-art fighting tools.
Luckily, no one was hurt in this incident according to the news reports. Can you imagine if this sort of this had happened on the beach in Florida? It would be absolutely insane, and there would probably be at least a dozen lawsuits pending in court.
