    Ridin out the Recession

Day Old Fried Fish, Salmon Pie, Aunt Coras Coleslaw, and 1-2-3-4 Cake:

Posted on October 14, 2011 by adminA woman takes a lover home during the day while her husband is at work. Her 9-year old son comes home unexpectedly; he sees them and hides in the bedroom closet to watch.
The woman’s husband also comes home. She puts her lover in the closet, not realizing that the little boy is in there already.

The little boy says, ‘Dark in here.’
The man says, ‘Yes, it is.’
    Boy: ‘I have a 7 Iron.’
    Man: ‘That’s nice’
    Boy: ‘Want to buy it?’
    Man: ‘No, thanks.’
    Boy: ‘My Dad’s outside.’
    Man: ‘OK, how much?’
    Boy: ‘$450′
In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the lover are in the closet together..
    Boy: ‘Dark in here.’
    Man: ‘Yes, it is.’
Boy: ‘I have a golf glove.’
The lover, remembering the last time,
    Asks the boy, How much?’
    Boy: ‘$250′
    Man: ‘Sold.’
A few days later, the Dad says to the boy, ‘Grab your clubs, let’s go to the range and hit a few.’ The boy says, ‘I can’t, I sold my 7 iron and my glove.’ The Dad asks, ‘How much did you sell them for?’
    Boy: ‘$700′
The Dad says, ‘That’s terrible to over charge your friends like that…that is way more than those two things cost. I’m taking you to church, to confession.’
They go to the church and the Dad makes the little boy sit in the confessional booth and closes the door.
The boy says, ‘Dark in here.’
The priest says, ‘Don’t start that shit again; you’re in my closet now.
This came last night from a good buddy of ours. I got a big kick out of it, and hope you guys do so as well.
What does this have to do with our recipes for today? Absolutely nuthin!
So, let’s go ahead and check out our recipes for today. Once more they are provided by a cookbook we found that is actually right up my and Deb’s alley…“White Trash Cooking!”
    Day Old Fried Fish:
    • 3 bay leaves
    • 1 bunch of green onions chopped, or one medium yellow onion chopped
    • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil
    • 1 large clove of garlic
    • ¼ cup of white vinegar
    • 1 lime (use only the juice
    • 3 tablespoons of ketchup
    • ½ cup of stewed tomatoes
    • Salt and Pepper to taste
    • Tabasco sauce to taste
    • Left over fried fish
Heat oil in iron skillet. Fry green onions and garlic until limp. Add tomatoes and bay leaves and cook 15 minutes. Then add lime juice, ketchup, vinegar, salt pepper, and Tabasco. Cook another 15 minutes.
Place cold fish in deep dish in layers, and pour the above ingredients while hot over the cold fish and let stand in the refrigerator for two hours up to two days. The longer you let it stand, the better the flavors.
    Salmon Pie:
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
    • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
    • ½ teaspoon butter
    • ½ cup buttered breadcrumbs
    • ½ cup sweet milk
    • 2 teaspoons chopped onion
    • ½ teaspoon sage
    • 1… 1 pound can salmon, drained
Combine all ingredients; place in 8 inch greased casserole dish. Bake on 350 for 40 minutes.
    Aunt Cora’s Coleslaw:
    • 1 medium head of cabbage
    • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
    • ½ pint of mayonnaise (use more if you like it juicy)
    • 3 heaping tablespoons of pickle relish (a little juice)
    • Salt and pepper to taste
Shred and chop the cabbage head until it’s as fine as you like it, and then put it in a bowl. To the bowl, add your onion, mayonnaise, pickle relish, salt and pepper to taste (black pepper is very important to a good coleslaw). Now let it stand in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 hours before serving.
This is perfect for your fish fry, with hush puppies, home fries, or grits.
    1-2-3-4 Cake:
    • 1 cup oleo
    • 2 cups white sugar
    • 3 cups flour
    • 4 eggs
    • 1 scant cup milk or water
    • 2-1/2 teaspoons Calumet baking powder
    • ½ teaspoon each of McCormick’s lemon and vanilla extract
    • Pinch of salt
Cream oleo, sugar, and egg yolks. Sift baking flour, salt and flour together. Add alternately with liquid; add flavorings. Fold in stiffly-beaten egg whites last.
Bake in tube pan on 300 for 1-1/4 hours, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Agenda 21 Part II Globalist Totalitarian Dictatorship Invading A Town Near You With Your Permission

    by James M. Simpson

Part I traced the sustainable development movement to longstanding U.N. environmental and population initiatives with unmistakably Marxist goals.

They talk about saving the environment, but most of the fine print refers to “equity,” “social justice,” “fair distribution” and other Marxist terms. “Global warming” is the latest scare tactic, but population control never left the scene. The U.N.’s answer: free condoms.

As I said before, these people are nuts.

The discredited work of Dr. Paul Ehrlich, population prophet of doom, and Obama’s lunatic Science Czar, John Holdren, are referred to in U.N. population studies, and Ehrlich was cited in Agenda 21’s Biodiversity Assessment Report under “Gender Perspectives.” That’s right; the feminists have a special perspective on global warming too.

So the pretext doesn’t matter. They will always find one, because in their minds the solution to everything, poverty, overpopulation, environmental degradation, or even who should win Dancing with the Stars, is Socialism. And the way they get there is by creating a crisis.

To promote their socialist nightmare, Marxists must use deceptive language and tactics. In “Sustainable Development” they have found a magic mantra.

It has allowed them to insinuate all their socialist fantasies into our legal code, under our noses, with little or no fanfare, scant public debate and graveyard noises from our treacherously AWOL mass media, right down to the local level – with our permission. Agenda 21, a UN initiative that was never endorsed by the U.S. Senate, as all international agreements must be, has penetrated into the ordinances of county and city governments all over America.

They have accomplished this through a little-known (to us) vehicle called the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) – Local Governments for Sustainability.
Quoting ICLEI documents from this article (emphases added):

Our campaigns, programs, and projectspromote Local Agenda 21as a participatory, long-term, strategic planning process that addresses local sustainability while protecting global common goods. Linking local action to internationally agreed upon goals and targets such as Agenda 21, the Rio Conventions, the Habitat Agenda, the Millennium Development Goals and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation is an essential component. [Sic]

Chapter 3, Section 1 states, “The eradication of poverty and hunger, greater equity in income distribution and human resource development remain major challenges everywhere. The struggle against poverty is the shared responsibility of all countries.”

As explained in the last article, this project has everywhere and always been about socialism. They don’t even hide it too well.

In his opening statements at the 1992 Earth Summit, billionaire U.N. bureaucrat and compulsive totalitarian Maurice Strong (also Al Gore’s partner in their carbon credit business), said:

Current lifestyles and consumption patterns of the affluent middle class – involving high meat intake, use of fossil fuels, appliances, home and work-place air-conditioning, and suburban housing – are not sustainable.A shift is necessary which will require a vast strengthening of the multilateral system, including the United Nations.

This is perhaps the most concise statement of Agenda 21’s real goals.

Strong echoes the sentiments of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who said:

Do not do unto the environment of others what you do not want done to your own environment…My hope is that this (earth) charter will be a kind of Ten Commandments, a ‘Sermon on the Mount’, that provides a guide for human behavior toward the environment in the next century.

Ironically, while Republican and Democrat alike rush to embrace sustainable development at the local level, even quasi-socialist states like Great Britain are abandoning it. From the London Telegraph:

Hurrah! Our useless Coalition government has finally done something useful by axing one of its more pointless and hateful quangos, the Sustainable Development Commission.

Recall from the last article that Agenda 21 was imposed on this country when Bill Clinton, defying the U.S. Senate’s will, created our own version, the President’s Council on Sustainable Development, by executive order.

The Telegraph article pulls no punches:

“Sustainability” is not nearly as politically neutral as its cuddly, warm name sounds. A bit like “multiculturalism” or “diversity”, “sustainability” is one of those weasel concepts which has been foisted on our language and culture by the hard left, linguistically masquerading as something unimpeachably caring and reasonable while in fact advancing a policy agenda designed to increase state control, remove property rights and liberty, and brainwash the gullible into ceding more and more of their democratic rights to UN and EU bureaucrats.

Tom DeWeese of the American Policy Center, a leader in exposing the radical goals of “sustainable development,” has called Agenda 21 “the greatest threat ever perpetrated against the American ideal of liberty.”

HERE is a list of the more than 600 U.S. cities, towns and counties currently participating in ICLEI’s Local Governments for Sustainability.

ICLEI has succeeded in implementing the sustainability agenda through something called the Delphi Technique. All activists need to understand the Delphi Technique. Originally created by the Rand Corporation as a consensus building methodology for scientists, Delphi has morphed into a subversive tactic for imposing malevolent leftist agendas on an unsuspecting public who would never agree if they understood.

A key feature of the Delphi Technique is to identify the “good guys,” i.e. those who go along with the predetermined agenda, and isolate the “bad guys,” thereby removing any obstructionists. It is a sophisticated application of Alinksy’s Rule #13: pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it.

In order to motivate the “good guys,” ICLEI has created a rating system for counties based on how well they implement Agenda 21. King County, Washington has become the proud test bed for this new system. Listen to this bloviating county executive:

“We are honored to be selected and look forward to piloting this innovative efficiency program,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine. “The Pacific Northwest and King County have a lot to gain by protecting the climate, and I am happy we are going to be using all available tools to measure how we make a difference.”

Note that local governments receiving a poor rating can now be identified as “bad.” For the young “enlightened” couple seeking a place to settle, such a place obviously won’t do. The city/county is also much less likely to receive “sustainability” funds available from federal and state government, so while they are on the hook to adopt Agenda 21 initiatives, they will have to fund it themselves. The rating system thus creates strong financial incentives for local governments to compete to be the “best” and serious consequences for those who do not.

And the above-referenced article about King County, perhaps inadvertently, has exposed the radical nature of this organization:

The STAR Community Index ™ (STAR) is a groundbreaking software tool being developed by ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability USA, in partnership with the USGreenBuilding Council (USGBC), the National League of Cities, and the Center for American Progress. (Emphasis added.)

You may recognize the Soros funded Center for American Progress. It is run by John Podesta, Clinton administration Chief of Staff and Obama Transition Team director. Podesta is also on the board of the Apollo Alliance, formerly run by Green Jobs Czar, self-described communist, Van Jones.

CAP has been described by Weather Underground Obama supporter Mark Rudd as Obama’s “government in waiting.” Members include Open Society Institute President and SDS founder Aryeh Neier, self-described communist, Van Jones and a laundry list of other radical leftists. The National League of Cities isn’t much better.

    Hierarchy of Transport

Here is another example of the Delphi Technique in application and a revealing illustration of where they are attempting to go with it. The Baltimore County government’s Office of Planning devotes an entire section to developing the concept of a “Green Transportation Hierarchy,” kind of an upside-down takeoff on Abraham Maslow[1]’s “Hierarchy of Needs.”

They identify those transportation modes that contribute to “global warming” ranked from least (pedestrians) to most (our cars).

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who are the “bad guys” here. It is interesting to note that taxis are preferred over high occupancy vehicles. Do taxis carry more people? Usually not, but taxis are not privately owned, like carpool vehicles using the HOV lanes usually are. The thrust clearly favors public transportation and the ultimate goal is walking and biking, the common modes of transport in communist China.

Yes, they want our cars too.

This is made explicit in the push for “20 minute neighborhoods.” Portland, Oregon is taking the lead in this initiative. Here is there justification (emphases mine):

Desires for sustainable living: increased energy conservation, support for local businesses, active and healthier lifestyles and improving community connections and equity has led to an interest in fostering the development or redevelopment of walkable communities, or 20-minute neighborhoods, in Portland.

Before the 1920s, when autos were rare and few people had access to a car on a regular basis, most people lived in 20-minute neighborhoods by necessity. As cars became more available, proposals to preserve 20-minute neighborhoods entered planning literature. In 1929, the “Neighborhood Unit” by Clarence Perry described successful neighborhoods as those that offer accessibility to the spectrum of day-to-day human needs. He proposed defining these neighborhoods in terms of a one-quarter mile walk.

Despite well-recognized interest in keeping 20-minute neighborhoods in the late 1920s, and beyond, during the second-half of the 20th century, the trend across the United States was toward providing auto-oriented residential and commercial environments.

Yep, autos, the villain. So here’s the pitch:

However, increased interest in improving sustainabilityresponding to challenges posed by climate change by reducing car trips and decreasing energy use in general, the need for affordable housing and to reduce housing-related costs, the need to stay physically fit and live healthily and wants to support local businesses—has renewed interest in walkable environments or 20-minute neighborhoods.

Walkable communities are defined specifically, too:

Some studies have shown that a 20-minute walk equates to approximately 1 mile walking at a fast pace; however, the average person could walk between ¼ to ½ a mile under safe, conducive walking conditions, (e.g. sidewalks and short blocks).

To emphasize the importance of short distances for walking, we used an analysis area with dimensions of 500 by 500 feet and used the frequency of intersections and the presence of sidewalks as factors in walkability.

They want to herd us into neighborhoods a little larger than a football field! And population density is specified as well: a minimum density of 12-18 households per acre.
The country is awash in this crap. The Maryland State government is virtually bursting with “Sustainability” initiatives like Governor O’Malley’s Smart, Green and Growing. The state Department of Natural Resources hosts a Sustainability Network page, where you can link to organizations promoting sustainability in every county in the state.

The Maryland state government created a new “Sustainable Growth Commission” in 2010. The year before, it passed the “Smart and Sustainable Growth Act of 2009,” which requires county planning officials to take a special course. You can see the study guide here. The guide is a road map to the “sustainable” future, which will force us all into cities, crowd us close to public transportation, bike paths and into “walkable neighborhoods”:

“…encouraging shorter drive times, locating housing closer to work, minimizing shopping trips, and giving our kids real options to walk and ride bikes to school, parks and playgrounds…” while reducing our “carbon footprint.”

But the drive to push us into cities would not be complete without an equally aggressive effort to chase us out of the country.

Earth First! is a radical environmental group branded by the FBI as domestic terrorists, a fact they are proud of. Believe it or not, Dave Foreman, Earth First’s co-founder who pioneered in the use of tree spikes (left), has been an intimate partner in development of the “sustainability” agenda.

His “Wildlands Project,” now called the Wildlands Network, was adopted by the U.N. Biodiversity Treaty. Here is what he has to say:

We must make this place an insecure and inhospitable place for capitalists and their projects… We must reclaim the roads and plowed lands, halt dam construction, tear down existing dams, free shackled rivers and return to wilderness millions of tens of millions of acres of presently settled land.

This is getting old: these people are nuts!

The goal is to make 50 percent of the land in every state inaccessible by man (except, of course, the “good guys”.) According to Tom DeWeese, much has been accomplished already:

Today, there are at least 31 Wildlands projects underway, locking away more than 40 percent of the nation’s land. The Alaska Wildlands Project seeks to lock away and control almost the entire state. In Washington State, Oregon, Idaho, Montana parts of North and South Dakota, parts of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Wyoming, Texas, Utah, and more, there are at least 22 Wildlands Projects underway. For example, one project called Yukon to Yellowstone (Y2Y) – creates a 2000 mile no-man’s land corridor from the Arctic to Yellowstone.

An excellent video by Dr. Michael Coffman explains it all. The six minutes are worth your time.

If I haven’t convinced you, Dr. Coffman’s video should. The metastasized cancer of Agenda 21 must be ripped out root and branch from our body politic. Local governments and state legislatures must be confronted and forced to repeal the myriad laws, ordinances, zoning codes and regulations that advance this globalist agenda. It simply must be tackled now.

This is a perfect issue for local Tea Party groups and must become a focal point of our efforts to reclaim our country.

The Wildlands map is particularly stunning, showing exactly how they plan to herd the entire U.S. population into tiny urban centers and put most of the country completely off limits. (Except for the good guys, of course)

    Question: Can we fit?

Toxic Metals Arsenic and Cadmium Found in Baby Food

    Mike Barrett
    Thursday, October 20, 2011

As our society has been moving with haste away from raw and natural foods and more towards processed foods, we are seeing a surge of toxic contaminants such as heavy metals leaking into our food. The heavy metals in our food alongside with heavy metals found in vaccinations and other forms of exposure are paving the way for wide-spread heavy metal poisoning. One particular form of heavy metal poisoning our society may be facing is arsenic poisoning.

The growing concern over arsenic exposure and arsenic poisoning is very real. Our bodies are being exposed to heavy metals in amounts that, in some cases, don’t exceed the “safety” limit put in place by government organizations. But with all of these “small amount” and with some amounts being completely unsafe, our bodies are being completely invaded by the exposure to these heavy metals.

Arsenic must be especially better controlled at is it being found in our food time and time again. A few months ago, baby foods in the UK were found to have some levels of arsenic – so much so that the babies who ingested the food were exposed to fifty times the amount of arsenic compared to a breast-fed baby.

The same foods contained even more heavy metals such as cadmium, which leads to neurological and kidney damage. The babies’ exposure to cadmium was 150 times more than the exposure to breast-fed babies.

While the level did not exceed “safety” limits, the low-level heavy metals arsenic and cadmium are invading the body of a completely under-developed child. A child’s vulnerability to any substance is exponentially higher than that of a fully developed person. What’s more, these “safe” levels of arsenic exposure are not only in baby food, but are everywhere. Many vaccinations are filled with heavy metals which include arsenic, lead, and mercury.

Arsenic is not only found in baby food; it also resides in other foods, juices, and water. In mid-September of this year Dr. Oz ran his own tests on apple juice and found that many apple juice brands contain high amounts of arsenic. Arsenic has even been found in the livers of animals which are treated with certain drugs in order for them to gain weight and be protected from a parasitic disease. What’s more, alongside with various other chemical and harmful substances, arsenic is is very present in the water supply.

Not only can arsenic exposure lead to arsenic poisoning for the developed adult, but the heavy metal’s effects are drastically intensified for a baby. Despite many of the amounts being small, the total amount of arsenic exposure anyone is subject to is anything but small. Alongside with arsenic, other heavy metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium which was also present in the baby food, pose a real health risk.

To lessen the health risks brought about through arsenic and other heavy metals:

    • Breast feed babies instead of giving them baby food. Breast fed babies have been shown to be much healthier than babies fed baby food or formula anyway.
    • Avoid processed food. You can expect higher levels of arsenic or any deadly chemical for that matter if you consume processed food instead of raw, organic food.
    • Buy a water filter. This will limit the amount of arsenic consumed through consumption.
    • Buy a shower filter. Skin is the largest organ in the body and one hot shower can yield the same amount of exposure to harmful chemicals as drinking 8 glasses of unfiltered water.
    • Perform a heavy metal cleanse to flush out the heavy metals that are already in your body.
Please visit Natural Society for more great health news and vaccine information.

    Emergency Sanitation

October 24, 2011 by Peggy Layton

You can easily make your own portable toilet.

What do you do if there is a disaster in your community? You will not be able to flush the toilets or run water down the drains if a flood, hurricane or something else overwhelms the sewer system. During a disaster situation, public services could be disrupted for many days. If the sewer system backs up or is unusable, you will not be able to use your toilet. Doing so could be very dangerous to your health. Failure to properly dispose of human waste can lead to epidemics such as typhoid, dysentery and diarrhea. The spread of disease is imminent unless you take precautions and make emergency sanitation facilities.

Your first task is to make some sort of temporary toilet for your family. Almost any covered metal or plastic bucket will do. If you have nothing but a garbage can, you can use it as a toilet. You can also dig a hole and squat over it, and then bury the waste. It is like glorified camping; be creative and do like the pioneers did.

We went on a river-rafting trip down the Salmon River in Idaho with 12 people for one week. We used what was called the groover. The groover got its name because in World War II, the soldiers used their rocket boxes as toilets. They sat on them and got grooves in their behinds. Our groover was always secluded in the trees or bushes. Sometimes, a jacket or tarp was hung around it to give more privacy. It had a regular toilet seat on it that was adapted with a metal piece on the underside that slid on and off the rocket box. When not in use, the rocket box liner was sealed tight with a twist tie and the lid was locked in place. It was loaded onto a raft each day and taken with us so no trace was ever left behind. We had a separate bucket for the urine, which was dumped into the river. Before we launched each day, our groover captain would yell out the final call for everyone to get their groove on.

    Make Your Own Portable Toilet

You can easily make your own portable toilet. You can store the supplies inside the bucket. If you need to, you can grab the bucket by the handle and go. The (5-gallon) buckets with toilet seat lids can be purchased from my website at www.peggylayton.com.

    Supplies Needed

    • Two buckets (5-gallon with lids): one for urine and one for solid human waste.
    • Two plastic portable toilet seats.
    • Several rolls of toilet paper.
    • Paper towels, wash clothes and hand towels.
    • A 2-liter bottle of water for washing hands.
    • Hand or baby wipes large size (two packages).
    • Sanitary napkins and personal-hygiene items.
    • Biodegradable (if possible) heavy-duty (13-gallon) trash-can liners to line the 5-gallon buckets.
    • Heavy-duty twist ties to seal the liners shut when not in use.
    • Large garbage bags for trash.
    • Disposable gloves.
    • Face masks.
    • Small collapsible shovel.
    • Plastic quart jar of laundry detergent, Borax, lime or a jar of Bio-Clean.
    • Hand sanitizer.
    • Small bottle of bleach with a tight-fitting lid.
    • Spray bottle to mix 1/8 cup bleach to 1 quart of water (label it) and use it to disinfect.
    • Spray bottle to clean the body.
    • Soap, hand-held mirror and personal hygiene items.
    • Diapers, if you have a baby.
You will be setting up a makeshift bathroom somewhere secluded outside. If your house is still intact but the sewer system is backed up, you can keep the buckets in the house. Sprinkle the human waste with 2 tablespoons of lime, Borax, laundry detergent or Bio-Clean after you are finished using the toilet. This controls the smell and bacteria. It is best to use one bucket for urine and the other for waste. Disposable wipes or toilet paper can be put in with the waste. The bucket with urine can be dumped more often, and the one with waste in it can be sealed with the heavy-duty twist ties and once per day disposed of by burying.

To avoid the spread of disease, bury all human waste by digging a hole at least 2 feet deep. Bury the entire bag of human waste in the hole and cover it up with the dirt from digging the hole. The biodegradable liners are the best for the environment.

If you cannot flush the toilet or the sewer is backed up in an emergency, it can still be used. Be sure to turn off the water coming into the toilet by turning the little handle on the pipe behind the toilet. Remove all the water from the toilet bowl. You can double line the toilet bowl with a heavy-duty garbage bag and follow the same procedure as you do with the buckets. When it is full, tie it up and dispose of it the same way as mentioned above.
If you live in an apartment and have no land to bury the bags, double bag them and then seal them the best you can with the twist ties. Place them in a large garbage can until the city can collect the trash and dispose of it.

    Bio-Clean
Bio-Clean is a blend of bacteria and enzymes. The bacteria are all natural, not genetically engineered. The enzyme concentration is the most powerful on the market. Bio-Clean is non-poisonous. It creates no heat or fumes and there is no boiling involved. It does not attack live tissue or inorganic materials, only organic wastes like human excrement, grease, hair, food particles, paper and cotton. This makes Bio-Clean safe for people, plumbing and the environment.

Bio-Clean changes the waste particles into water, carbon dioxide and mineral ash, which become harmless in the outhouse, cesspool, pit or waste system. These elements are then available to use as compost in the garden. I found out about Bio-Clean from my husband who is a plumbing contractor. He sells Bio-Clean to customers for use in septic tanks to keep them from backing up. Bio-Clean is available to purchase on my website www.peggylayton.com.

Use A Spray Bottle To Clean Your Body
Keeping the body clean in an emergency is very important. Use a spray bottle with a small amount of antibacterial soap in it. Use paper towels or hand towels to wash up. Water needs to be boiled in emergency situations. Set up a way to boil the water. Let it cool down before putting it in a spray bottle. Be sure to put a washcloth to wash up with and a hand towel to dry off with in the sanitation kit.

    Avoid Intestinal Ailments

    • Store drinking water, 1-gallon minimum, per person, per day. Store it now so you will have it ready in case of an emergency.
    • Know how to turn off the water-service valve to your home so no contaminated water can come into your home. Have a backup plan for emergency drinking, cooking and washing water in case your municipal supply is cut off.
    • In emergencies, boil contaminated water for five minutes. Keep hands clean and all food that has been exposed must be washed with clean water. Keep paper plates, cups and utensils in your grab-and-go kit so it minimizes the need to wash dishes.
    • Avoid using foods or liquids that might be contaminated. When in doubt, throw it out.
    ION Water Treatment

I use a product called ION stabilized oxygen in all liquid to kill bacteria. It will keep the water safe for up to five years. It has been found to be very effective in water treatment. Many studies have been done on this product and it is concluded that ION will kill giardia, cholera and dysentery within a few minutes. It doesn’t have any of the harmful side effects that are associated with chlorine or Iodine. ION is a high concentration of oxygen.
One 2-ounce bottle will treat 110 gallons of water.

ION can be used medicinally to fight bacteria in the body. It can be used on cuts and wounds. ION will not harm the normal flora in our bodies. ION can be taken every day (five drops per 8-ounce glass of water). This will help boost the immune system by introducing stabilized oxygen into the bloodstream. It can also help you if you suffer from a bacterial or viral infection. During times of sickness caused by a bacterial or viral infection, take 50 drops every three hours diluted in a glass of water. The ION goes into the stomach and fights the bacteria or virus.

To purchase ION go to my website www.peggylayton.com. Click on ION water purification. Double click on the picture of the ION and all the information will come up on the many medicinal uses as well as water treatment. If you purchase 10 bottles at a time, you can get a discount. If you purchase 25 or more bottles, you can buy it wholesale.

Water Tanks For Emergency Water Storage

Water is king. Water storage is actually more important than food. Without good, clean, potable water, you won’t be able to eat the dehydrated food you are storing, keep yourself hydrated, wash dishes or clean yourself.

I keep water in several locations. I have a 185-gallon water storage tank that sits in the corner of my camping-equipment room. It needs to be located in an area that won’t freeze or overheat. The ideal temperature to store water is room temperature or below (65-45 degrees Fahrenheit). This water tank can be purchased on my website www.peggylayton.com.

I also keep smaller 5-gallon containers filled with water and ready to grab if needed. Any food-grade plastic container can be used to store water. The bottles that apple, cranberry or grape juices come in are ideal for water storage. Never use milk jug type containers because they are made to break down after about six months, and they will start to collapse and leak.
Food Storage And Self-Sufficiency Products Available
If you are interested in any of the seven books I have written (such as Emergency Food Storage & Survival Handbook, or Cookin’ with Home Storage), water storage tanks, ION water treatment, dehydrated or freeze-dried food storage sealed in gallon-sized cans with a shelf life of 15 years, wheat grinders, Bio-Clean sewage treatment, 72-hour packs or emergency medical supplies, click here.

Prepackaged Food Storage Meals With A 15-Year Shelf Life
I have been storing packaged meals called eFoods. They are ideal for long-term food storage because they are packaged in Mylar® pouches that serve four people. Everything is in the pouch except water. Just add water and cook the food for 15 minutes, and it’s done. The meals are delicious and the company will let you try samples of the meals before you buy. Just pay $9.95 for shipping and you get three meals that serve four people. I find them very delicious and easy to make. That is what you need in a crisis situation. I don’t just save them for a rainy day. I make the eFoods for meals when I am in a hurry, in the mountains, camping or hiking or feeding a crowd. I have decided that premade meals are the best food storage you can buy. They are fast, easy and convenient, and you don’t waste food that way.

This company has a program through which you can get one box of food per month. They call it “auto-shipment,” and it’s great! All you need is 10 minutes to set it up, and your food storage will be on auto-ship. Each month, you get a box of food delivered to your home. Go to the website, click on Take the Freedom Tour, sign up for the free food and enjoy. Check it out here.

Adventures in Solar Cooking Part 1

You may have noticed in this month's catalog a new product: The SOS Sport Solar Oven. We are all really excited about this product over here and can't wait to try it out. So stay tuned this week as we post about all of the tasty things we will make in the new SOS Sport Solar Oven.

The SOS Sport Solar Oven uses the power of sunlight to heat up and cook food.

    • Use the power of the sun to cook in an emergency
    • Large capacity - holds 2 - 3.4 qt. Pots
    • Long-lasting and efficient
    • Highly weather resistant
    • Complete kit: oven, 2 pots, thermometer, manual, recipe booklet, WAPI (water pasteurization indicator) and solar reflector
    • Lightweight - 10 pounds

The oven is so easy to use: just put the food in a dark colored pot

(it comes with two), point it towards the sun, and then walk away. While slight readjustments through out the day will speed up cooking time, they are not necessary. And since the SOS Sport cooks at lower temperatures, you don't have to worry about food burning. Its like cooking in your crock pot on low.

Another thing I like about this oven is that it only has 3 pieces. The oven, the lid, and the reflector panels. The included pots are a bonus, but not a necessity, as any dark colored cookware with a lid will work. The detachable panels are really only necessary in the winter, to help direct more sunlight into the oven.

There really isn't anything this oven can't cook. From roasts, fish, chicken and pork, to bread and other baked goods, this oven does it all. The oven uses and traps the natural moisture in the food you are cooking, meaning you don't have to add extra water. This allows food to retain its natural vitamins, minerals and flavor. Since none of the moisture is lost, and it cooks at low temperatures, it is really difficult to burn food in this oven. Usually you run out of sunlight before food gets to the point where it would burn.

Because it only weighs 10 lbs and is wind and weather resistant, the SOS Sport is the perfect addition to camping trips, beach parties, fishing trips, back yard barbecues and everyday cooking. You no longer have to pack heavy and messy charcoal or flammable fluids. And cooking outside means the house doesn't get hot! You usually end up using more energy to cool down your house than you do to cook your food. Now take the heat outside where it belongs.

This week, we will be trying a variety of recipes and ideas in the SOS Sport. So stay tuned, and in the meantime, make some suggestions here of things you would like to see us try and cook.

Adventures in Solar Cooking Part 2

This week, we are testing out our new SOS Sport Solar Oven. Check out Part 1 in our Blog series, where we give you all the details about how this oven works.

    First Attempt: Dinner Rolls

We keep hearing a lot of contradictory reports about bread and solar ovens: some people say it makes bread perfectly, and other people say that it will make bread, but it wont brown the tops. Opinions vary, and we decided to not take anyone's word for it. So I grabbed a bag of frozen rolls from the freezer (I know, its cheating. Especially when we have a delicious Honey White and Wheat bread mix right next door in the warehouse).

We preheated the SOS Sport Solar oven by... setting it out in the sun, of all things. After about 30 minutes, we noticed that it wasn't heating up much. We realized this was because we were trying to heat it up without the panels. The panels detach, and are only supposed to be used in the winter or cold days. Since it wasn't very cold outside we didn't think we needed them. So our oven went from this:

    to this:
With the panels on, we had the oven preheated to about 300 degrees in about 30 minutes. Not bad for just sitting outside on the lawn.

We greased one of the included pans with our Clarified Butter, and then put the rolls in. It is recommended that you cook everything in black or dark colored pots, as they help absorb the heat better. Even when baking bread, you need to have the lid on the pot so it will trap the heat and moisture.

We then set them in the oven, re-closing the lid as fast as we could to preserve as much heat as possible. We then made sure the oven was pointed toward the sun, and went back to work.

We checked the temperature every 30 minutes or so. We discovered that when you put cold food into the oven (such as bread dough that was in the freezer the night before) you can lose as much as 150 degrees in the oven, which will then take longer to regain. After about 45 minutes the oven was back up to about 250, and we let it be for a total of 2 hours and 11 minutes. Feeling slightly nervous, we pulled the bread out and...

Delicious, golden brown bread. The tops were browned, the bottoms were fluffy. All-in-all, not a bad first attempt at cooking in the SOS Sport Solar Oven.

    What we learned today:
    1. It IS possible to bake bread that browns on top and is delicious in the solar oven.
    2. Preheat the oven as hot as you can (within safety limits), because you will loose a lot of heat when you put your food in.
    3. Use the reflectors in autumn and winter.

Adventures in Solar Cooking Part 3

This week, we are testing out our new SOS Sport Solar Oven. Check out Part 1 and Part 2 in our Blog series, where we give you all the details about how this oven works.

    Its Pizza time!

Coming off of our successful experiment in Dinner Rolls, we decided to up the stakes and make a food storage pizza.

Now, when I say food storage, most peoples think of something like this:

    Pictured: Gruel

But earlier this year we posted our delicious recipe for a pizza, made with nothing but food storage items. This recipe was so popular we decided to see how it would fare in the SOS Sport Solar Oven.

We prepared the dough and other ingredients as described in this post. And as you can see, it looked pretty great.

Like we discussed last time, its important to preheat the oven as hot as you can get it. Its pretty amazing how much heat you lose every time you open the lid.

I won't go into a lot of details in the preparation (see this post for cooking instructions). But I will share with you the results! http://preparednesspantry.blogspot.com/ ... dried.html

Delicious. Not perfect, but pretty dang good. Since the oven cooks at lower temperatures, the pizza dough will rise more before it cooks. We made the mistake of putting the whole thing, toppings and all, into the oven all at once. So the dough rose a bit too much for a traditional pizza. But it was very tasty.

We also discovered that while you can't really burn things in the SOS Sport Solar Oven, you CAN overcook things. The toppings (specifically the cheese) were in the oven for the same amount of time as the dough, so it became a bit too crispy.

Overall though, a pretty successful day of solar cooking, using all food storage, and no electricity.

    Things we learned today:
When you open the oven the first time, you need to add 30 minutes to your cook time. Every time you open the lid after that, add 10-15 minutes.

When making pizza, pre-bake the dough for about 40 minutes, and then add your toppings for the last 20-30 minutes. This will help you get a more traditional pizza crust.

Adventures in Solar Cooking Part 4

This week, we are testing out our new SOS Sport Solar Oven. Check out Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 in our Blog series, where we give you all the details about how this oven works.

    Solar Pot Roast

Having successfully made a number of great bread-related dishes with the SOS Sport Solar Oven, we decided to try something a little more difficult: A full pot roast, with potatoes and carrots.

For this one, we really didn't have a recipe. But it went something like this:

One 3lb roast, un-browned (although you really could brown it on the stove before putting it in the oven if you wanted).

    10 small red potatoes
    3 cups baby carrots
1 heaping tablespoon Clarified Butter, melted, to grease pans
1 heaping teaspoon Clarified Butter, melted, drizzled over vegetables
    Garlic Salt, to taste
Generous dash, Provident Pantry Italian Herbs and Seasonings Blend

You can never have too much butter

We used to Clarified Butter to coat the pans so our food wouldn't stick. We decided to cook the vegetables and the roast in separate pots. The roast got a gentle dusting of garlic salt and herbs, and then went into the pot. The vegetables received the same, but we also decided to drizzle them with a little more butter, because butter is delicious.

Much like a crock pot, the idea with cooking in a solar oven is to get the food out in the sun and then leave it be. We preheated the oven to about 350 degrees, then threw the roast and vegetables in at about 10:30 AM. And then we went back inside and tried to wait patiently...

we're not very good at waiting...

When we put the roast in, without browning it, we caused the temperature to drop by almost 200 degrees. It took a solid hour for it to climb back up to just 250 degrees, where it stayed for the rest of the day.

We let it all cook for about 6 hours. We did this in part because we wanted to make sure that the roast was completely done. But we also wanted to push the whole "you can't burn things in the solar oven" to its limit. Vegetables don't take nearly as much time to cook as the roast does, and we wanted to see what would happen to them if left in "too long". So around 5:00pm, we went outside to see what happened.

    This happened

We noticed a buildup of moisture on the inside of the lid. This isn't a huge problem, but it can block sunlight, making it more difficult for the oven to heat up. Luckily we were finished cooking. It is recommended that you simply let the moisture dry on its own, either by putting the lid back on the oven without any food in it, or leaning the lid against the wall to drip dry. Anyways, back to the food.

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5kdHa-kmYtk/T ... G_6341.JPG

The smell was incredible. The roast was fork tender and delicious. The vegetables were very soft, buttery and delicious. Perhaps they cooked a hair too long (I do prefer them to be a little firmer, personally) but they were not overcooked or burned.

    What we learned today:

-While not impossible, it certainly is very difficult to burn things in the SOS Sport Solar Oven.

-Moisture can collect on the lid on cooler days, and needs to be watched for as it can affect cooking.

-In general, butter really can only make things better.
