    WASHINGTON, Nov 12 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell set two top goals for the 2012 election: a Republican takeover of the Senate and the defeat of President Barack Obama.

    He achieved neither.

    Starting in January, he will be up against a president he tried and failed to bring down, with a Senate minority weaker by two.

    "We all had a bad day," said Josh Holmes, chief of staff of McConnell's personal Senate office.
    While there is no sign of any immediate threat to his job as minority leader, McConnell is facing intensified criticism from the right, which has seen him for some time as too "establishment."

    McConnell blocked much of Obama's agenda the past two years, including his call to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans. But some conservatives complained that he was not sufficiently hardline. They were outraged, for example, when he compromised with Obama and agreed to increase the debt limit in 2011 and extend a payroll tax cut.

    People Believe What They Want to Believe

    Conventional wisdom says late deciders break against the incumbent.

    I said otherwise. I based my 90% likelihood of an Obama win on the notion that late deciders break in an unknown manner but in a big way. When the surge in support for Romney ended following the first debate, it was clear, at least in my mind, that the next momentum change, regardless of which way, was going to seal the fate.

    The initial move was towards Obama and hurricane Sandy sealed the fate. Obama not only carried Ohio but Virginia as well, just as I stated.

    On Monday, with Nate Silver's Five Thirty Eight Political Calculus Blog for the New York Times suggesting an 84% percent likelihood of an Obama victory I wrote 90% Chance of Obama Win.

    I upped my forecast on the basis of momentum (Nate upped his forecast to 92% on Tuesday morning, also based on momentum).

    However, I received countless emails from people telling me to stick to economics because there was no way Obama would win Virginia. I heard from others telling me how biased the polls in favor of Obama were.

    I also received many taunts that my election forecasting sucks (in spite of calling 49 of 50 states correctly in the last election before Obama was even nominated! Anyone else do that?)

    Well it was not my analysis that sucked, it was the clear bias of Romney supports and Rasmussen that sucked.

    As I said, "people believe what they want to believe".

    Far Right Costs Romney the Election

    Even with that massive win in the first debate, Romney could not pull it off. There are many reasons: Flip-flopping, inane Chrysler ads, abortion issues by other Republican candidates, war-mongering, and military spending. Hurricane Sandy may have been the final straw.

    Regardless of Sandy, much of the country is sick of war, sick of military spending, sick of idiots who proclaim rape to be God's work. It is actually conceivable that enough moderates in swing states made last minute decisions based on women's right issues rather than hurricane Sandy.

    The fact of the matter is Romney dug himself so deep a hole kowtowing to the religious-wrong and war-mongers that even a stunning victory in the first debate coupled with a weak economy and huge unemployment could not carry the day.

    Mitt Romney, Rush Limbaugh Are the Past

    Romney is the past. So is Rush Limbaugh, so are all the extremists and so are all of the warmongers hell-bent on starting WWIII or a war with Iran.

    I could not and would not vote for Romney. I would not have voted for Romney had I lived in Ohio or Virginia either. Nor would I have voted for Obama, but other independents clearly did.

    I voted for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and I am proud of my vote. Can those voting for the lesser of two evils say the same thing?

    I hope the Republican party learned a lesson tonight because as long as Republicans cling to the past, and kowtow to the extreme right they will continue to lose elections.

    Rand Paul, Chris Christie, and others are the future of the Republican party. Are they listening? I sure hope so because another 4 years of Obama followed by 8 years of an Obama-clone is certainly not the right answer.

    Daily Caller: On his Monday radio program, talk show host Mark Levin, author of “Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America,” rejected the notion that the Republican Party should become more moderate to win over voters and blasted several commentators who suggested otherwise.

    Levin added that the so-called Republican “consultant class” — including MSNBC analyst and former John McCain adviser Steve Schmidt — should be required to disclose how much they’re being paid before they’re allowed to try to steer the party.
    “This consultant class, ladies and gentlemen, is very, very dangerous,” Levin said. “And all this money you contribute to the campaigns — they’re pocketing a fortune. And the Republican Party, they’re not only pulling the Republican Party in the wrong direction, they’re losing campaigns.”

    Widespread Noncompliance: Americans' Best Nonviolent Recourse Against Government Tyranny

    Voting has become a futile avenue for political change in the United States. In the two-party duopoly that exists today, only candidates that support the current agenda are allowed to adorn the moniker of Republican or Democrat on ballots across the nation. In effect, the U.S. currently has a one-party system. With the potency and prevalence of modern propaganda, the voting public can be easily convinced to dismiss any voices that deviate from the intended storyline. Participation in third party movements is quickly labeled as a waste of time by mainstream political pundits. Furthermore, electronic voting has cast suspicion on the results of modern elections leaving many voters weary of the process. It’s not surprising that the error involved in electronic vote counting is higher than the error associated with hand counting in the past. This should be in reverse. Voting has become a meaningless endeavor in the U.S. What is a person to do?

    When authority becomes overbearing and there is no possibility of legal recourse for the oppressed, widespread noncompliance is the most suitable alternative. Populations are conditioned to fear punishment by the state because methods of punishment are ineffective otherwise. If everyone perceived the local jail to be a fun place, jailing would no longer be a suitable deterrent for undesired behavior in that particular location. People would do what they wished without fear. In such a circumstance, the state may make penalties harsher, but there is a practical limit on how harsh they can be made – especially when large portions of the population are involved in ignoring particular laws.

    For example, instituting the death penalty for drug use would never be seriously considered and would only lead to greater public displeasure with the state. Laws become null when the public at large refuses to obey them. Besides, jail provides a warm place to sleep and three meals a day.

    On another front, it is clear that economic interests steer U.S. foreign policy. Readers are encouraged to check out the short 15-page booklet – War is a Racket – written by the most decorated marine in our nation’s history, Major General Smedley Butler.

    The types of special interests that influenced militarism in Smedley Butler’s day still do so today. Currently, the war in Afghanistan is being driven by the opium trade and the sizeable lithium deposits located there which are a very mouthwatering resource to the power brokers of a society that drives all of its mobile technology with rechargeable lithium batteries. However, there is one necessary ingredient that is needed to execute all types of warfare – manpower. The number of soldiers needed can be limited through improvements in technology, but war still requires a lot of human capital. If the youth were discouraged from enlistment and soldiers that have come to disagree with imperialistic military policy would refuse to continue fighting unconstitutional wars, a huge blow would be delivered to the U.S. Military Industrial Complex. What would happen if Big Brother called for war but no one showed up? A draft would certainly cause widespread dismay.

    If concerned citizens recognize the ever growing police state in the U.S., it is those folks' responsibility to do everything within their power to stand up for liberty. There are no political solutions to be sought out in present times that involve voting or completely remaining within the imaginary bounds of the law. Over the years, the policy of the central government has been to appease certain groups with its right hand all the while continuing with whatever actions they can manage to get away with using the left hand. It turns out that they’ve been able to get away with quite a bit. It’s time the People are heard. With a ~90% Congressional disapproval rating, it is apparent that it is time for the Sleeping Giant to once again wake up and show its resolve.

    It’s time for us to be noncompliant with laws and orders from our government that overstep the limits imposed on it by the founding documents of our nation. It is our duty as citizens to uphold and preserve the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The politicians have abandoned this post. It’s time for the People to give up their fear of the United States Central Government and once again live as free Americans.

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, -That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to affect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
    Big Brother – There are many of us that intend to be free. The evils are becoming insufferable. Continuing to dial up the tyranny and taking more of our money to finance it will only increase our numbers. It would be wise to end the unconstitutional wars being waged on our people and people abroad and begin paying the debt. It is only a matter of time until critical mass is reached. The situation can still be repaired with your cooperation. Please admit your failures and shortcomings and try to make amends. All of your actions will lead to predictable long-term consequences for the Republic.

    Please consider these consequences when you act. There are more tools available than just hammers. When one nation is responsible for 90% of murders that occur in the world, it is pretty easy to take actions that would reduce the kill rate by 90%. Quit killing other people in the name of the citizens of the United States. Your government represents K Street – not us. You are losing the consent of the governed. You know it, and We know it. If you are interested in maintaining a free society, you share in the responsibility of righting the ship. If instead you are interested in totalitarian rule… We will win. I can only hope that you do not consider genocide as a possible final solution. Even in that case, you would find that our ideas would still – ultimately – win. The People will be free.
