Donald Trump a hit in Russia? You wouldn’t think so. But the mayor of Yalta in Crimea has wished the maverick Republican success in the 2016 presidential election and invited him to visit the city, hinting that a street may be renamed after him.

“We are following the elections process in your country with great interest,” Yalta Mayor Andrey Rostenko wrote in an open letter to Trump published on the city’s website. “We like your election program and we like you as an extraordinary person.”

The mayor added: “After your victory in the election you plan to establish friendly relations with President Putin – and this is an excellent decision.”

Rostenko said that Trump’s approach to foreign policy was very similar to Russia’s, and he saw this as positive. “You want to be friends with China, and we want the same thing. You support Russia’s effort in fighting international terrorism and so do we. We have a lot in common and this is a fine excuse to arrange a meeting,” the letter read.

The mayor reminded The Donald that Yalta has the only street in the Russian Federation named after a US president - the Franklin Roosevelt Street. He wished Trump victory in the polls and suggested that “one day Yalta might get one more street named after the US leader who made an invaluable input into the improvement of relations between our two peoples.”

Earlier this week, Trump praised Russia’s anti-terrorist operation in Syria, noting that Moscow is “bombing the hell out of ISIS” because President Putin wants to prevent terrorism spilling into Russia. Trump also criticized US Middle East policies as “failed” and leading to a “total mess” in Iraq and Libya.

Trump, a 69-year-old billionaire real estate mogul, entered the US presidential race in June, seeking the Republic nomination. He is currently leading in the polls.

These people who are connected to US through WWII will never forget and have never forgotten what we mean to them, and it's time we remember what they mean to US. Americans lost approximately 419,000 lives, military and civilian, during WWII. The Russians lost 27 million.

Wouldn't it be nice for those of US who have lived our entire lives under the "threat" of Russia to live out our lives as friends with Russia? I think so. Russian studies was a major part of of my degree in International Relations, so for many years now I've had to listen to these stupid and dishonest politicians telling my country outright lies about Russia, lies that can be refuted by almost any text book on the subject coupled with a little common sense.

When you are connected by an event both as horrible and remarkable as WWII, it's a connection by blood, spilled blood, and there really is no greater connection than that. It's the same with France, when our government tried to make US enemies with them, the people of France did not agree because we saved them the spilled blood. They too will always remember their enormous debt owed to the United States and we should never forget the enormous contribution the French Underground played in WWII.

The unique body called the Permanent Security Council of the United Nations, is a body no one speaks much about these days, even though it is the single most important body on this planet. This Permanent Security Council consists of the 5 countries who were both the victims and victors of WWII, United States, Great Britain, France, Russia and China. There should never be a dispute or a conflict involving these five nations that isn't resolved through diplomatic means.

We've suffered the idiocy for many decades now of our Presidents and yes members of Congress trying to make enemies out of our friends, it's time for that to end and for the people of the United States to end it. Perhaps Donald Trump will be the President we elect that corrects this wrong and sets it right.

It looks like he's off to a good start, and I hope it continues. Being friends does not mean giving them our manufacturing, it means being friends. Period. Being friends means being friendly, pleasant, respecting each others interests, sure, doing some business that's beneficial to both countries, and coming together in times of crisis to defend each other and maintain the peace.
