4 firefighters shot, 2 dead in upstate N.Y

Firefighters are currently letting burn a fire which spread to three homes in Webster, N.Y., because the scene is not secure, after an unknown suspect fired upon first responders, killing two, Dec. 24, 2012. / WROC

WEBSTER, N.Y. Four volunteer firefighters responding to a pre-dawn house fire were shot Monday morning, two fatally, leading to a shootout in suburban Rochester, N.Y., police said.

"One or more shooters" fired at the firefighters after they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore, just east of Rochester, Town of Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

There was no active shooter at the scene later Monday morning, according to Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O'Flynn. The first Webster police officer who arrived on the scene exchanged gunfire with the shooter, Flynn said, but he had no other information on the shootout.

The West Webster Fire District received a report of a car and house on fire on Lake Road, on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario, Flynn said.

"When they got there, they stated to take on rounds and the initial responders were struck," the sheriff said.

The two wounded firefighters were in critical condition at a Rochester hospital, Flynn said.

Firefighters are currently letting the fire on Lake Road burn because the scene is not secure. At least three houses are engulfed in flames, along with one vehicle, according to firefighters.

CBS Affiliate WROC reports at least one house has collapsed from the flames.
Webster, a middle-class, lakeside suburb, now is the scene of violence linked to house fires for two Decembers in a row.

Last Dec. 7, authorities say, a 15-year-old boy doused his home with gasoline and set it ablaze, killing his father and two brothers, 16 and 12. His mother and 13-year-old sister escaped with injuries. He is being prosecuted as an adult.

William Spengler, ex-convict who killed 2 firemen in Webster, left note saying he wanted to 'do what I like doing best, killing people'

A house burns after a man set fire and then shot and killed a responding police officer and a firefighter while injuring two other firefighters in Webster, New York.

    MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT

Webster, N.Y. – Webster Police have identified the gunman in Monday morning's deadly shooting as 62-year-old William Spengler.

The psycho sniper who boasted that killing people was he did best gunned down two volunteer firefighters used an all too familiar weapon: a Bushmaster .223 caliber rifle.

That same model of killing machine was used in the horrific elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six staffers died.

The chilling revelation came Tuesday morning — a day after the gunman, William Spengler, set his home on fire and ambushed first responders, turning his suburban neighborhood outside of Rochester, N.Y. into a burning war zone.
Investigators scouring the scorched crime scene for a motive found a disturbing note hinting at Spengler's madness.

"I still have to get ready and see how much of the neighborhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people," Spengler, 62, wrote in a note according to Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering.

NY GUNMAN WHO SHOT FIREMEN ALREADY BARRED FROM OWNING GUNS

by BEN SHAPIRO 24 Dec 2012

While liberals on Twitter pointed at the shooting of four firefighters in upstate New York as evidence that more gun control is necessary, NBC News reports that the gunman, one William Spengler, was already banned from owning guns.

Spengler served 17 years in prison for killing his grandmother with a hammer in 1980. He was convicted only of manslaughter, and was paroled in 1998. It seems that stronger sentencing for convicted murderers might be a more worthwhile goal of liberals seeking to prevent gun violence.

Spengler shot the firefighters just before 6 a.m. ET in Webster, New York. He’d set the fire, then waited for the firefighters to show up before shooting them. “It does appear that it was a trap that was set,” said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering. “People who get up in the middle of the night to fight fires, they don’t expect to get shot and killed.”
    Spengler shot himself.

New York already has some of the most stringent gun laws in the nation. Felons, like Spengler, are already barred by law from owning guns according to federal law.

Seems that the criminals will always obtain guns regardless of the law. Looks like Federal law wasn't enforced. JMO
