ALAN GRAYSON’S HOUSE SPEECH CUT OFF AFTER CITING POLL COMPARING CONGRESS TO DOG POOP, COCKROACHES

Congressman Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) was cut off on the House floor amid a blistering speech in which he compared Congress to dog poop on Wednesday.
Grayson, who noted a recent cover of the New York Daily News which branded the body as a “House of turds,” cited a poll revealing that Americans think higher of dog waste than of their elected representatives.
“What do you have a higher opinion of, Congress or dog poop? Congress 40 percent, dog poop 47 percent,” Grayson said on the floor of the lower chamber.
The outspoken Florida Democrat was attempting to call for a vote on a resolution that said Congress’ “dignity” had been damaged because of the government shutdown and was attempting to prove his point by reading the results of a recent Public Policy Polling survey.



Speaker pro tempore Steve Womack (R-Ariz.) interrupted Grayson, warning him that he could only continue delivering his remarks if he followed the rules of the House.
“You may proceed so long as the gentleman is confining his remarks to whether or not the resolution is privileged under Rule IX and if the gentleman should fail to continue along that path pursuant to the chair’s guidance the gentleman will be ruled out of order and the chair will be prepared to rule on the question,” Womack said.
“I am demonstrating vividly that the dignity of the house has been offended in support of this resolution,” Grayson countered.
Permitted to continue, Grayson read aloud more outlandish poll results.
“What do you have higher opinion of Americans, Congress or toenail fungus? Congress 41 percent, toenail fungus 44 percent,” he said. “What do you have a higher opinion, Congress or cockroaches? Congress 42 percent, cockroaches 44 percent.”
Womack, clearly agitated by Grayson’s perplexing set of remarks, eventually cut him off and dismissed his resolution.
