Adegbile defeat: Democrat self-preservation trumped Obama’s radical agenda

Self-preservation sits atop Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and it certainly reigns supreme in the world of politics — unless you possess a sense of character demanding you to serve, not be served.
And so the need for political self-preservation reared its ugly head this week in a Senate vote on an Obama nominee by the name of Debo Adegbile as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, that Obama and his nefarious henchman, Eric Holder, sought to add to the stable of shetland ponies. It’s a key position for Obama and Holder to implement their “social justice” agenda.
However, there was an issue with Adegbile’s support, beyond simply his defense, for a cop killer by the name of Mumia Abu-Jamal — hmm, is that the name his parents gave him — who mercilessly killed Philadelphia police office Daniel Faulkner in 1981.
As reported in the Washington Post, “The Senate on Wednesday dealt an embarrassing setback to President Obama when several politically vulnerable Democrats defected to help Republicans defeat the nomination of Debo P. Adegbile to be chief of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Adegbile’s nomination had revived the racially charged legacy of the murder of a Philadelphia police officer more than three decades ago and the vote exposed the anxiety facing many red-state Democratic senators as the midterm elections approach. Seven Democrats joined with Republicans in blocking a final vote on the nomination, the largest number of Democrats to vote against an Obama nominee, according to Senate aides.
The Senate Democrats who opposed the nominee were: Christopher A. Coons (Del.), Robert P. Casey Jr. (Pa.), Mark Pryor (Ark.), Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), Joe Manchin III (W.Va.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.) and John Walsh (Mont.).Pryor faces one of the most difficult reelection battles of any Democrat this year, while Donnelly, Heitkamp, Manchin and Walsh hail from socially conservative states that Obama lost in 2012.
Interestingly Democrat Senators Hagan of North Carolina, Landrieu of Louisiana, Begich of Alaska and Shaheen of New Hampshire voted yes on the nominee, probably expecting the vote to pass. The question is, will Obama churlishly demand that the vote be retaken? You have to wonder, why would Obama bring up such a controversial figure and place vulnerable Democrat Senators in an untenable position? Because he is a rigid ideologue accustomed to having his way and not concerned about others — including the fellow Americans he was elected to serve.
Of course, Eric Holder, the fella who told States’ Attorneys General that they didn’t have to uphold laws they didn’t like, didn’t think Adegbile’s background was any big deal saying, “It is a very dangerous precedent to set for the legal profession when individual lawyers can have their otherwise sterling qualifications denigrated based solely on the clients that their organizations represent.”
At a time when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid defiantly changed the vote threshold for cloture from 60 to a simple 51 majority, this vote was a surprise and a miscalculation for the White House and Senate Democrats, who generally vote in lockstep to further the progressive agenda.
But in this instance, Senate Democrats voted to save their own bottoms, rather than kiss one.
Tell Congress: IMPEACH Eric Holder! Sign the petition.
