BOEHNER TEPID IN RESPONSE TO WHITE HOUSE GUN CONTROL PUSH

BOEHNER TEPID IN RESPONSE TO WHITE HOUSE GUN CONTROL PUSH

by AWR HAWKINS 18 Jan 2013
After Obama finished announcing 23 executive orders aimed at guns on Jan. 16, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rep. Tim HuelsKamp (R-Kas.), and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus lined up to criticize what they saw as a straightforward assault on liberty.

Rubio, for his part, promised he will "oppose the president's attempt to undermine Americans' constitutional right to bear arms." And Huelskamp criticized what he sees as Obama's "consolidation of power" and overall "disdain" for the Second Amendment.

Priebus also focused on what he saw as "power grab" which did nothing to reduce the chances for a repeat of the kind of gun violence we saw on Dec. 14.

Added Priebus: "[The President] paid lip service to our fundamental constitutional rights, but took actions that disregard the 2nd Amendment and the legislative process."

While these and other GOPers were quick to voice their disgust with Obama's overreach, notably missing was any strong opposition from House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

Boehner's office would only say the House will "review the recommendations."

Republican opposition to Obama's use of executive powers limited

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said nothing about the executive actions after Obama's announcement, promising through a spokesman to review the president's gun control recommendations and any gun-related legislation passed by the Senate.
