Report: Attorney General Eric Holder to Announce His Resignation

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will reportedly announce his resignation on Thursday after heading the Justice Department for six years.
Citing two sources “familiar with the situation,” NPR reports that Holder will exit the U.S. Department of Justice as soon as his replacement is confirmed, though the process could potentially drag out into 2015.

A White House official says President Barack Obama will announce Holder’s departure later Thursday. Holder is the first black attorney general, and his tenure is the fourth longest on the job.
But Holder’s tenure as the nation’s top law enforcement officer is filled with controversy. Holder, 63, faced harsh criticism for his involvement in the Fast and Furious gun-walking scandal, an operation that allowed thousands of guns to cross into Mexico only to be lost and end up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels.
Congress later voted to hold Holder in contempt over his withholding of Fast and Furious documents.
The DOJ also came under fire over its probe of classified leaks. The department investigated Fox News reporter James Rosen, naming him a “co-conspirator” for reporting based on the account of a government source.
Holder, one of the longest serving members of the Obama administration, has reportedly been “adamant” about leaving the Justice Department before the end of President Barack Obama’s second term.
    More from the NPR report:

Holder most wants to be remembered for his record on civil rights: refusing to defend a law that defined marriage as between one man and one woman; suing North Carolina and Texas over voting restrictions that disproportionately affect minorities and the elderly; launching 20 investigations of abuses by local police departments; and using his bully pulpit to lobby Congress to reduce prison sentences for non-violent drug crimes. Many of those sentences disproportionately hurt minority communities.
And then, there’s his relationship with Congress. From the day Holder’s nomination was announced, Republicans led by Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., signaled he would be a political lightning rod.
The attorney general’s portfolio, which spans sensitive law enforcement cases and hot button social issues including marijuana and gay marriage, didn’t help. But even longtime aides say Holder didn’t do enough to help himself by shrugging off preparations and moot sessions before congressional appearances and speaking off the cuff — and obliquely.
Holder reportedly informed his DOJ staff at some members of Congress on Thursday morning about his decision to resign. He has not revealed what his future plans hold.
Solicitor General Don Verrilli is believed to be a leading candidate to succeed Holder as attorney general.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Eric Holder is probably stepping down because the Obama administration and Holder know there is a chance Republicans will pick up enough seats to impeach him. Any true investigation and impeachment of Holder will lead right back to the numerous criminal acts and high crimes by Obama! Holder is the stop gap and they are throwing him out to create a burned bridge on impeachment between Holder and Obama!

NPR: Holder to Announce Resignation Today

    by
    BRIDGET JOHNSON

    September 25, 2014 - 7:49 am

National Public Radio is reporting that Attorney General Eric Holder will announce his resignation today:
Two sources familiar with the decision tell NPR that Holder, 63, intends to leave the Justice Department as soon as his successor is confirmed, a process that could run through 2014 and even into next year. A former U.S. government official says Holder has been increasingly “adamant” about his desire to leave soon for fear he otherwise could be locked in to stay for much of the rest of President Obama’s second term.

Holder already is one of the longest serving members of the Obama cabinet and ranks as the fourth longest tenured AG in history. Hundreds of employees waited in lines, stacked three rows deep, for his return in early February 2009 to the Justice Department, where he previously worked as a young corruption prosecutor and as deputy attorney general — the second in command — during the Clinton administration.

But some of that early glow faded in part due to the politicized nature of the job and in part because of Holder’s own rhetoric, such as a 2009 Black History Month speech where he said the country was “a nation of cowards” when it comes to discussions about racial tension.
No confirmation yet from the Justice Department.

President Obama is scheduled to arrive back in Washington at 3:25 p.m., leaving time in the late afternoon for any announcement to be added to the schedule.

UPDATE: The White House says the announcement will come at 4:30 p.m.

Better hope a SCOTUS seat doesn't suddenly become available.

    The injustice of Eric Holder

Average Americans aren’t blind to the Justice Department’s politicization

Illustration of Eric Holder and the corruption of the Justice Department by Alexander Hunter/The Washington Times more >

By John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky - - Tuesday, September 16, 2014

Even we were shocked when we researched our new book, “Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department,” at the extent to which Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. has politicized the Justice Department and put the interests of left-wing ideology and his political party ahead of the fair and impartial administration of justice. However, there is no doubt that the American public has also recognized just how politically corrupt Mr. Holderis, given this month’s very embarrassing poll conducted by Hart Research for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal.

The poll asked respondents their opinions about 10 different national political officials, ranging from Bill Clinton to President Obama to Eric Holder, as well as the Democratic and Republican parties. They were given choices of very positive, somewhat positive, neutral, somewhat negative, very negative and “don’t know the name.” About a third of respondents didn’t know who Mr. Holder is (37 percent). However, those Americans who knew Mr. Holder gave him the second-lowest “positive” rating of anyone or any organization on the survey at a mere 15 percent. Only Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio had a lower “positive” rating than Mr. Holder. The attorney general’s “positive” rating was less than half of the positive rating of the Republican Party and 27 points behind that of his boss, Mr. Obama, who was rated favorably by only 42 percent of respondents.

Mr. Holder’s combined “negative” rating of 32 percent was higher than that of Mr. Clinton, Sen. Marco Rubio, Sheriff Arpaio and Sen. Rand Paul. In fact, the poll balanced the total positive feelings survey participants had against the total negative feelings to figure out what the participants as a whole thought of each of the politicians in the poll. Mr. Holder, at 17 points, had the highest negative gap of any individual in the survey — only the Tea Party had a higher negativity gap at 23 points.

Contrary to what liberal elites think, the average American isn’t dumb and can see when someone is abusing his office and allowing politics to drive his decision-making. They may think they can fool the American people, but that is a mistake that many arrogant politicians and government officials have made in the past, and Mr. Holder is just another in a long line of such government officials. From his misbehavior in everything from the New Black Panther voter-intimidation case to Operation Fast and Furious to the IRS targeting scandal, Mr. Holder has shown the public why he is the first and only attorney general in our history to be held in contempt by the House of Representatives.

As a longtime, current employee of the Justice Department told us, Mr. Holder and his subordinates have “racialized and radicalized” the department “to the point of corruption.” They have “embedded politically leftist extremists in the career ranks who have an agenda that does not comport with equal protection or the rule of law; who believe that the ends justify the means; and who behave unprofessionally and unethically. Their policy is to intimidate and threaten employees who do not agree with their politics, and even moderate Democrats have left the department, because they were treated as enemies by administration officials and their lackeys. Another black employee who has worked for the Justice Department for decades said to me, ‘There is no justice left in Justice under this administration.’”

As former Justice Department prosecutor Andy McCarthy has said, the Justice Department under Mr. Holder has become “a sort of full-employment program for progressive activists, race-obsessed bean counters and lawyers who volunteered their services during the Bush years to help al Qaeda operatives file lawsuits against the United States.”

There is no way to know how long it will take to repair the damage that Mr. Holder has done to the management and operation of the Justice Department. One thing we do know for sure — it will take a great deal of work by a new attorney general who is willing to take on the activists that Mr. Holder will leave embedded within the career civil service ranks of the department. And it will take political willpower and steadfastness of a kind that is rarely seen in Washington.

John Fund is a columnist for National Review. Hans A. von Spakovsky is former Justice Department official and contributor at National Review Online. They are the coauthors of “Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department” (HarperCollins/Broadside 2014).
