Protesters in L.A. block 10 Freeway

    By Andrew Blankstein | 7:22 p.m.

The LAPD says the Freeway reopens after a 24-minute closure caused by a group that split off from a larger demonstration. No injuries or arrests are reported. . .

This is confirmed rioting. We need to know if this is continuing or spreading and can anyone locate any videos or corroborating reports?

But any mention of rioting is horribly racist.

    Update:

Update: Wounded protesters being rushed to hospital.

Update: I guess those predictions of violence weren’t so wrong after all.

    Update: Getting ugly.

Trayvon Martin protesters block 10 Freeway in L.A.

    By Andrew Blankstein
    July 14, 2013, 7:22 p.m.

The Los Angeles Police Department has called a citywide tactical alert after demonstrators protesting the not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman case blocked traffic on the 10 Freeway in the Mid-City area Sunday evening.

The California Highway Patrol said "police activity" around the 10 Freeway and Crenshaw Boulevard has jammed traffic. Motorists are urged to avoid the area.

No arrests have been made, and no one was hurt. LAPD sources said a splinter group of a larger protest walked down an onramp to the 10 Freeway and stood mostly in the eastbound lanes.

Officials said portions of the 10 were closed from 6:20 p.m. to 6:44 p.m. but have since reopened.

Photos and videos showed both sides of the 10 Freeway blocked and demonstrators milling about the freeway.
Demonstrators protesting Trayvon Martin's death amassed in New York City's Times Square on Sunday night after marching about two miles from an earlier rally in Union Square.

As tourists looked on, the protesters chanted: “What do we want?” “Justice!” “When do we want it?” “Now!” The demonstration was one of many in major U.S. cities Sunday after George Zimmerman was acquitted Saturday night in the 2012 death of Trayvon Martin in Florida.

After a protest Saturday night in Oakland turned violent, Sunday's protests were peaceful.

Protesters marched onto the eastbound Interstate 10 near Arlington Avenue (map) on Sunday, shutting down the freeway for nearly an hour and leading to confrontations with police, authorities said.
Los Angeles Police Department officers fired bean bags at protesters after some people threw objects at officers, LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told NBC4.
At least one person has been arrested so far, NBC4's Tena Ezzeddine reports.
The mob was cleared from the roadway by about 7 p.m., when LAPD officers began firing rubber bullets, protesters said. Some of the first tweets showing photos of people on the freeway were posted shortly after 6 p.m.
The protest was one of at least two major ones in the city, beginning about 4 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr and Crenshaw boulevards.
The protesters took to the streets to protest a day after Florida jurors found George Zimmerman not guilty in the killing of Trayvon Martin.
Several people were struck by bean bags in a shopping center near 10th Avenue and Washington Boulevard in Mid-City, said Jasmyne Cannick, who tweeted photos of the protesters and said she and an attorney were observing the rally.
"They're in pain and I don't know what's going to happen to them," Cannick said.
She said that protesters seemed confused and panicked once officers began firing the bean bags at them from multiple sides.
Photos on social media showed a large group of people walking on the freeway with no cars in sight. Several of the people held signs and banners.
Twitter user Jasmyne Cannick (@jasmyne) tweeted "We are literally walking on the 10 freeway for Trayvon Martin! #NoJustice"
The Los Angeles Police Department has been placed on tactical alert.
