Calexit: One Third of Californians Want State to Secede

    by JOEL B. POLLAK 24 Jan 2017 1,413

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows that 32% of Californians back “Calexit” — the movement to secede from the Union and form an independent country.

    The Business Insider notes:
The 32 percent support rate is sharply higher than the last time the poll asked Californians about secession, in 2014, when one-in-five or 20 percent favored it around the time Scotland held its independence referendum and voted to remain in the United Kingdom.

California also far surpasses the national average favoring secession, which stood at 22 percent, down from 24 percent in 2014.

The poll surveyed 500 Californians among more than 14,000 adults nationwide from Dec. 6 to Jan. 19 and has a credibility interval, a measure of accuracy, of one percentage point nationally and five percentage points in California.

The secession movement has been boosted by consternation with the surprising election of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States. California voters overwhelmingly favored the Democrat favorite, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The Golden State is entirely responsible for Clinton’s victory in the popular vote nationwide.

California Democrats have openly acknowledged the movement to secede, though mostly to discourage it. Kevin de Léon (D-Los Angeles), who leads the California State Senate, told legislators at the start of the new session: “Many Californians – some tongue-in-cheek, some hand-to-heart – have advocated withdrawal. But, in America, no state ever succeeds by seceding.”

While much of the rest of the country might be happy to see California go, the state would probably face constitutional obstacles to secession. The Supreme Court held in Texas v. White (1869) that states could not secede unilaterally.

'Calexit' organizers can now start collecting signatures to get California secession on ballot

Supporters of the campaign for California to secede from the United States can now begin collecting the hundreds of thousands of signatures they need to get a proposed "Calexit" initiative on the ballot.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla cleared the proposed initiative to begin collecting signatures on Thursday.

If the measure were to get on the ballot, and at least half of registered voters participate in a vote, with at least 55% of those voting to approve, the results would be treated as a "declaration of independence," according to the title and summary prepared by the state attorney general's office.

The measure's fiscal impact is "dependent on various factors," writes the state's nonpartisan legislative analyst, and if it succeeds would result in "major, but unknown budgetary impacts."

The proposal's backers, known as Yes California, have argued that the state is culturally out of step with the rest of the U.S. and that California pays more money to the federal government than it receives in spending. The election of President Donald Trump has only strengthened their argument, they say .

"California loses [by] being a part of America culturally and financially," said Marcus Evans, one of the group's co-founders. "It could be a nation all its own, everybody knows that. The only question is if they want to break off."

It's unclear how the group will collect the required 585,407 valid signatures from registered voters over the next 180 days to qualify for the ballot.

A campaign committee, Yes California Independence Committee, has raised no funds so far, according to records from the secretary of state. But Evans says his group has more than 7,000 volunteers (significantly down from a 13,000 estimate in December) ready to gather signatures and that voters can expect to see signature-gatherers on the streets in the next couple days.

Yes California says that even if the proposed initiative does land on the ballot and voters approve it, such an unprecedented move to secede would need to receive approval of at least a majority of the states in the union, among other legal hurdles .

    Evans says he's not fazed.

"America already hates California, and America votes on emotions," he said. "I think we'd have the votes today if we held it."

America does not "hate" California!!! America loves California. You're our Paradise State. Such a beautiful state. Such nice people, too!! We won't let these few crazy people separate you from our nation. No, that will not happen, not ever. The United States is from "sea to shining sea", forever. We're going to solve this illegal immigration problem, reduce this massive legal migration problem, fix our bad trade deals, put Americans back to work at good jobs with good wages and great benefits making wonderful Made in USA products, and become one happy and prosperous nation again.

    You'll see!!

I live in California and I don't know one person that wants to secede. What I am seeings is anger. Anger that sees a state government full of anchor babies that is using our tax dollars for illegal immigrants. Anger over the rise in automobile accidents, deaths and the rise in hit and runs since giving illegals drivers license. Last Saturday, three hit and runs within a 100 mile stretch, two woman killed. I saw the cars. I saw the destruction at the tow company. One hit my grandaughter rolling her car and fled the scene. Do I know if the driver was legal, no. I just know what the witnesses and police told me. Likely a stolen car and/or undocumented driver. The only area not squashed is where she was sitting. I thank God and the American citizens that got her out of the car and stayed with her. She walked away sore and only a cut on her finger from grabbing the cross on her rear view mirror as she was rolling and of course nightmares.

People are mad at everything in our corrupt government as we see more and more evidence that California is only representing the Left and illegal immigrants at our expense. Sometimes I wonder if they are being so aggressive towards Trump as a warning towards the California citizens not to rise up and take our state back.

So if they are their own Nation...can we put them on the Terror Watch List?

Will they have to have Passports to travel into the USA? Will they get 20-day visitor passes? Their Driver's Licenses will be no good, they will have to Print their own National Drivers' Licenses.

So no Health Care companies writing insurance in their Nation? Same with Car Insurance?

Can we pull our Military Bases and Personnel out of California? Cut all Federal Money to their schools and colleges and welfare programs? So no more Medicaid and Medicare?

So all of our Federal Offices will be shut down and relocated?

What about the shipping ports? Relocate them to Oregon and Washington? Will we cut new Trade Deals with all the companies in California?

They'll have to establish their own Social Security and Medicare programs, too. The only value I see of it for the United States is that it would put Hollywood in a foreign country and immediately remove about 10 million illegal aliens from the United States.

You bring up good points that could/would negatively impact California becoming it's own country. It's just a knee-jerk reaction from the sore losers, not thought through and mostly to thumb their noses at our new president. Many in my state do not agree with this (at least 2/3rds apparently). Just a bunch of hot air and will fizzle out.
