Voters who supported Donald Trump through his campaign for the presidency have been slowly coming to the realization that not all of the president-elect's promises were meant to be taken literally -- or that he even remembers making them.

For some, the realization that they had been sold a bill of goodsby the incoming president hit home when it became clear that alumni of Goldman Sachs, the investment bank Trump constantly attacked on the campaign trail, would be key members of his new administration.

For others, it took Trump explicitly admitting it himself. Last week, after announcing with great fanfare that Carrier Corporation had been persuaded to keep some 700 jobs in Indiana rather than sending them to Mexico (along with the more than 1,000 jobs it is still sending south of the border) Trump admitted that he had never actually meant it when he promised voters in Indiana that Carrier would never leave.

In fact, he said, it wasn't until he watched a video of his own speechthat he even remembered saying itin the first place.

But while many of the promises Trump is likely to break or conveniently forget can be chalked up to the president-elect taking advantage of what even some of his supporters are admitting is a "post-truth" era in American politics, one of Trump's oft-repeated pledges is dead on arrival in Washington regardless of how well Trump remembers making it: Congressional term limits.

Perhaps, but again consider the alternative.

I was never naive enough to believe he could do all he said.

The one thing this election did was give a voice to a very large segment of this country that had been effectively silenced. WE had been silenced by the news media pretending no one was speaking what we were - by denying access, through their slants to our concerns. The few words that got through were met with a wall of 'racist', etc. We were bombarded with stories of those 'hard working people looking for a better life'. Even our very own supposed Republican President championed them.

This made some of us feel maybe we were just a small minority, but PE Trump talked about those things and we learned that we are not in the minority.

We can use this opportunity to help make things happen.

First to hold our lawmakers feet to the fire, or go to the polls in as great a number as we did last time..

Get involved in your county, city and school governance.

We can put our money where our hearts and minds are and the interests of our families and our country. Don't do business with companies that hire illegals. Take the time to check it out. Don't let any company work for you that hires illegals.

Speak out - every time. Recently while getting my DL renewed, a man was pontificating loudly, and self importantly, that we needed illegals because the Americans were too lazy to work. I asked him who was doing the work before the illegals came, because to my recollection the jobs were getting done and this country was humming along pretty good.

We can pray for PE Trump - even for those we know are against us.

OR - we can squander this opportunity and sit back and criticize everything and just let it slip by. If we let that happen, it may very well be our last.
