A contingent of clergy and faith leaders, seeking a halt to immigration raids and deportations in San Diego County, today with the regional chief of immigration enforcement and his staff on Tuesday.
Although they were told the raids are mandated by Congress and cannot be stopped, the clergy members said they received some assurances to take to their congregations and a promise of further meetings.

"We're not completely happy with the outcome because our goal is to stop the raids," said Rabbi Laurie Coskey, Executive Director of the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice. "But we learned some important things, particularly that we can come to them directly with our concerns and complaints. It became a friendly meeting where we shared our different perspectives and looked for common ground."

The six-member contingent met with Rob Baker, Field Office Director for Detention and Removal Operations, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for over an hour. They agreed to meet again within three weeks.

Baker told the group that, contrary to community fears, ICE is not conducting door-to-door or random sweeps looking for undocumented immigrants, and is not targeting communities, schools, parks or supermarkets. The clergy said afterward they remain worried about members of their congregations who are fearful and anxious as they go about their daily life in San Diego County.

"We asked them to exercise discretion as we continue to work for comprehensive, humane immigration reform," said Rev. Scott Richardson of St. Pauls Episcopal Cathedral.

In addition, pro-illegal alien activist, Christian Ramirez was interviewed by a hispanic news station. Ramirez also attended the meeting and was very disapointed because Mr. Baker told them that the raids will not only continue, but would increase.

Please call I.C.E. Director Rob Baker and give him your appreciation!
