Congress Passes Border Bill; AILA Calls for Real Immigration

BORDER SECURITY DOES NOT MEAN AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS. AMERICANS DO NOT SUPPORT AMNESTY FOR ILLEGALS. JUST ENFORCE CURRENT IMMIGRATION LAWS AND ILLEGALS WILL LEAVE. WE DO NOT NEED AMNESTY. WE KNOW THEY DO NOT WORK. TO DATE THE FEDS HAVE NOT SECURED THE BORDER BASED ON THE 1986 AMNESTY. THEREFORE, A NEW AMNESTY WILL NOT WORK. DEPORT ILLEGALS BECAUSE THEY ENTER WITHOUT VISAS OR OVERSTAY. THAT IS THEIR PROBLEM. THIS COUNTRY HAS NOT CREATED THE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION PROBLEM. AND THE LAWYERS FOR ILLEGALS MUST WORK FOR LEGAL RESIDENTS. THEY MUST NOT WORK FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS WHO ARE LAW-BREAKERS. NO AMNESTY.

After some procedural stumbling, today the U.S. Congress passed a $600 million immigration enforcement supplemental appropriations package for additional border enforcement funding through the fiscal year 2011. The package was sponsored by a group of senators and representatives who had previously insisted on holding the line for a comprehensive approach to immigration reform. Having taken an enforcement-first step, the leader of that group, Senator Charles Schumer, said "Hopefully colleagues on both sides of the aisle will [now] come together and we can pass comprehensive reform".

"Indeed," said David Leopold, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), "it is imperative that legislative attention turn to comprehensive reform. While immigration enforcement needs are legitimate, we will continue to be throwing good money after bad if we insist on pursuing these enforcement-only approaches. In order to truly address the pressures on the border we need comprehensive immigration reform."

Any effective, long-term solution to the immigration problem must: 1) require the undocumented population to come out of the shadows and earn legal status; 2) ensure that American businesses are able to hire the workers they need to help grow our economy while protecting U.S. workers from unfair competition; 3) reduce the unreasonable and counterproductive backlogs in family-based and employment-based immigration by reforming the permanent immigration system; and 4) protect our national security and the rule of law while preserving and restoring fundamental principles of due process and equal protection.

"The American taxpayer deserves better than expensive, half measures that don't represent real solutions to our immigration woes," stated Leopold. "It's time to stop posturing and start acting."

Senate approves $600 million in border security funds
    By the CNN Wire Staff
    August 12, 2010 11:42 a.m. EDT

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says the plan will "continue bolstering security on our Southwest border."

Washington (CNN) -- Two senators -- Democrats Charles Schumer of New York and Ben Cardin of Maryland -- returned from their August recess Thursday to give their chamber's approval for $600 million in emergency funding to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

The measure, which has already been approved by the House of Representatives, now advances to President Obama's desk to be signed into law.

The bill passed by unanimous consent, a parliamentary term for a voice vote that doesn't require the return of the entire Senate chamber. GOP leaders had agreed to the maneuver.

Among other things, the bill provides for roughly 1,500 new law enforcement agents, new unmanned aerial vehicles, new forwarding operating bases and $14 million in new communications equipment.

The measure has attracted strong Democratic and Republican support. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano praised the plan last week, saying it would "add important, permanent resources to continue bolstering security on our Southwest border."

"These assets are critical to bringing additional capabilities to crack down on transnational criminal organizations and reduce the illicit trafficking of people, drugs, currency and weapons," she said.

The bill is funded in part by imposing higher fees on personnel companies that bring foreign workers into the United States.

Here's what may happen - border enforcement stems the flow of illegals coming in, interior enforcement through employer sanctions and mandatory e-verify for all employess drives them out slowly but surely, negating the so-called need for CIR.

Could this be one of those "give them enough rope" moments?

Taking the incentives away would solve the problem. However, you know what the excuse will be for not taking the incentives away.....that we're hurting the poor innocent children.
