Cops respond to reports of a gunman opening fire at the Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey

Numerous reports say that a gunman has opened fire at the Westfield Garden Plaza the incident reportedly began about 9:45 p.m.

There were unconfirmed reports that the gunman was wearing a helmet and mask; began firing near the Nordstrom store; and was moving through the mall, shooting out security cameras.

SWAT teams were converging on the Westfield Garden State Plaza shopping center in New Jersey Monday night after numerous reports that a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle.

Police in Paramus confirmed they were investigating the reports of a lone gunman wearing body armor and firing inside the largest mall in the Garden State.

A Patch.com report cited a Bergen County official as saying there was an “active shooter” at the mall.

There was no immediate confirmation on whether anyone had been killed or wounded. The first reports of trouble at the mall surfaced about 9:45 p.m.

SWAT teams from Paramus and neighboring communities were headed to the mall, located at the intersection of Route 4 and Route 17 near the Garden State Parkway, a police official told the Daily News.

9:50 pm: Gunman might have left the mall, believes Mayor

The Mayor says that the shooter might have left the mall, reported the CNN. The Mayor added that only one shell casing was said to be found at the mall. There were no further gunshots heard and no injuries have been reported yet.

9:40 pm: SWAT officers doing a store by store search

Hunting for the shooter, the SWAT police have started a store-by-store sweep of the mall, but of no avail. The New Jersey Police confirm that at least one shooter is present inside the mall.
