Democrats to state officials: oppose voter ID laws
By SUZANNE GAMBOA The Associated Press

WASHINGTON—House Democrats asked secretaries of state in all 50 states to oppose new voter identification laws because they threaten the right to vote for many Americans.
"Today we are witnessing a concerted effort by Republican lawmakers across several states to place a new obstacle in front of minorities, low-income families and young people who seek to exercise their right to vote," said Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House, said in a news conference Thursday.

The Democrats made the plea in a letter in which they ask the secretaries of state to put aside partisan considerations and be vigilant against fraud and protect access to the polls for all citizens. The letter had 196 House supporters Thursday, including delegates to U.S. territories.

Hoyer said states are trying to make it harder to vote through recently passed laws that require specific types of photo identification to cast ballots, reductions in the number of early voting days and tougher laws on collecting registrations.

Several states passed such laws over the past year and other states have considered them, saying they are targeting voter fraud. Many experts say there have been few instances of people pretending to be someone else at the polls in order to vote, which is the type of fraud photo ID laws target.

Many, though not all, of the recently passed laws have been sponsored and supported by Republicans. Democrats, whose constituencies include large numbers ofminorities, students and some elderly, have decried the laws as throwbacks to the Jim Crow era.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, Congressional Black Caucus chairman, says he is ashamed of the new state laws implemented years after his own grandfather, a Texas farmer and preacher, faced poll taxes and literacy tests that asked impossible to answer questions in order to vote. He said there is no record his grandfather ever voted in his 103 years.

Requiring a photo ID to rent a movie is downright discrimination, plus dozens of other requirements to get thru life. /sarc

To say that students don't have photo ID's is downright laughable. There's a driver's license, plus a student ID. In TN, they managed to come up with a 92 year old lady, who later got here photo ID. The dems are worked up because some races are decided by a couple votes and having some dead voters in the mix would assure victory. This is such a blatant attempt to assure fraud in the system. It's outrageous.

Voter integrity would no be in keeping with the Democrats Skew the Vote campaign.

    Obama 2012 launches Project Vote

By MIKE ALLEN | 8/25/11 8:33 AM EDT Updated: 8/25/11 4:31 PM EDT

President Barack Obama's reelection campaign on Thursday announced "Project Vote," a campaign-within-a-campaign that is aimed at increasing registration and participation among Democratic base constituencies — including young voters, seniors, African Americans and Hispanics, plus Native Americans and gay and lesbian voters.

This effort — what used to be called base-constituency campaigns - will meld officials specializing in field, political, outreach and communications. Officials said a major focus will be voter registration among groups that have historically under-participated, and base voters who have recently moved into a state or a community.

"The big goal here it to expand the electorate," said an Obama for America official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "That's how we won in 2008, and we think that's the path to victory again in 2012. There's a registration component, and a turnout component for sporadic voters."

The campaign said in a statement: "Project Vote will drive our campaign strategy - from paid media, to digital outreach, to grassroots organizing and voter registration efforts - to communicate with and engage key demographic groups, such as African Americans, Women, Youth, Latinos, LGBT, Veterans, Asian Americans and others.

"Leading this effort will be the National Project Vote Director, Buffy Wicks and National Project Vote Deputy Director, Michael Blake ... In addition to launching Project Vote, the campaign is excited to announce Yohannes Abraham as the Deputy National Political Director, working under Katherine Archuleta, the National Political Director ...

"The Political team will also build on the campaign's commitment to technology and digital organizing by finding innovative ways to link stakeholders up with campaign related information and resources. And, joining Mitch Stewart, Director of Battleground States, will be Karine Jean-Pierre ... Stewart and Jean-Pierre will work closely to determine a state strategy that will result in 270 electoral votes. They will work closely with several departments including field, political and Project Vote."

Here are brief biographies released by the campaign:

—Katherine Archuleta joined Obama 2012 in July. Most recently she served as the Chief of Staff to Secretary Hilda L. Solis. @Archuleta2012

—Yohannes Abraham served as the National Political Director of Organizing for America at the Democratic National Committee. @YohannesOFA

—Buffy Wicks has a long history in grassroots mobilization, political organizing and civic engagement. She served as the Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement for President Obama. @buffywicks

—Michael Blake is the Deputy Director of Project Vote for the Obama for America Campaign. Most recently he served as the Deputy Associate Director in The White House Office of Public Engagement where he directed outreach to the African-American and Minority Business communities. @mrmikeblake.

—Karine Jean-Pierre is the National Deputy Battleground States Director, joining Mitch Stewart who is serving as Battleground States Director. Prior to joining the re-election campaign, Jean-Pierre served as a Regional Political Director at the White House Office of Political Affairs. @KarineJP2012

—Clo Ewing will serve as the Director of Constituency Press and will be the point person for all constituency questions and stories. Prior to joining the campaign, Ewing was a television producer for Harpo Productions and CBS News.

—Gabriela Domenzain will serve as the Director of Hispanic Press for Obama For America. Prior to joining the campaign Gabriela was the Communications Director for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and a founding producer of Univision Network's Sunday-morning public-affairs show, Al Punto.

What is the obstacle? Having an ID? You think voter ID is tough, wait until you apply for Social Security. Even Obama will be disqualified (requires a true-blue official birth cerificate, xerox copies need not apply).

Makes you wonder why the Dems really oppose voter ID, when all they have to do is establish assurances that people who do not drive or have not had the need for a photo ID in the past can be accommodated without undue red tape. I would think that DHS would love the idea. Did Steny check with Big Sis before making his statement?

Regardless, it's on our state ballot tomorrow and the wife and I are voting for it.

They have gotten away with this for years using the same rhetoric. It is up to the citizens of this country that care about the integrity of our elections to make sure they don't get away with it again.

The problem is that no one is prosecuted to the point that the election is declared void.

Colorado - 5000 illegals voted - Bennett was elected by less than 1000 votes and he is now Senator Bennett.

The Nevada Senatorial election - separate voting lines for non English speakers, voting machines serviced by the SEIU that assumed Reid no matter what the voter said, casinos bussing illegals to te polls.

    etc, etc, etc.

The public is more informed about Project Vote, Acorn, the entities that fund them and their agenda.

If we allow them to steal this election, shame on us.
