Donald Trump finds an unlikely supporter in Vladimir Putin

The US presidential hopeful and Russia's president have spoken highly of one another

US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has found himself an unlikely supporter in the form of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

A foreign policy speech made by Mr Trump on 27 April, in which the Republican candidate spoke about his hopes for an improvement in US-Russian relations, was well received in Russia, CNN reported, with people in Moscow praising his attitude.

“I believe an easing of tensions and improved relations with Russia, from a position of strength only, is possible,” Trump said during his speech.

President Putin, along with senior Russian politicians, allegedly welcomed Mr Trump’s comments, while Mr Putin has previously spoken warmly of the billionaire.

The Russian president said at his annual press conference back in December: “He is saying that he wants to move to a different level of relations with Russia, to a closer, deeper one. How can we not welcome that? Of course, we welcome that.”

He described also described Mr Trump as a ‘flamboyant’ and ‘outstanding’ man, and appeared keen to work with the Republican frontrunner in future.

For his part, Mr Trump has previously returned the compliment, stating: “I will get along - I think - with Putin, and I will get along with others, and we will have a much more stable world. I would talk to him.

He went on to say: “It's not up to us to judge his virtue, that is up to US voters.”

Mr Putin and Mr Trump’s latest bout of mutual appreciation comes amid increasingly tense relations between the US and Russia, in a week that saw a Russian jet barrel roll over a US planeabove the Baltic Sea in what the US described as an ‘aggressive’ move.

I will be so elated when we are friends with Russia, our dear Ally from WWII. How the Russians suffered during WWII is an untold story that needs to be told so more Americans understand why it is so important to our security and world peace for the US and Russia to be very close allies. China as well, but Russia has been the one left out in the cold without any purpose.

There are 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council. They are the United States, Great Britain, France, Russia and China. Each country has the right to veto any proposed action by the United Nations. There is a reason for this. These are the 5 countries who won WWII and saved the planet. Each one had different roles, each one played important parts to the eventual victory. There is no question that the US won the War but without Russia, there would have almost no chance for the outcome that occurred. Russia lost 20 million lives during WWII, half in troops and half in civilian deaths, and records now are showing another 8,600,000 that died from starvation and disease following the war related to the war.

There is no country on earth that wants world peace as much as Russia, because no country on earth suffered more than Russia during WWII. The suffering and loss Russia experienced during WWII is almost unimaginable. The country that suffered the most after Russia is China, who lost 11 million, between 3 and 4 million in troops and around 8 million in civilian deaths. China also had post war war-related deaths due to famine and disease of between another 5 and 10 million.

These are the countries, especially Russia, who know the cost of war in terms so great we can't really comprehend it.

Yet, no one ever talks about it.

Russia even got to Berlin first and handled most of the fighting, much of it hand to hand combat, terrible. It's thought that we could have gotten their first but Eisenhower held US back to let Russia get in there and take care of business or a great deal of it first. That decision saved a lot of American lives and cost Russia many more.

We all owe the Russians a tremendous debt, yet no one ever talks about it.

We should have been friends with Russia through all these many decades. Hopefully, we will be. I believe we have that chance with a Trump Presidency, because of the potential for a strong relationship of mutual respect that Trump and Putin could create. This would be so wonderful for our two countries, our other allies, as well as the rest of the world.

I could foresee improved relations among Security Council members. However there are still a lot of wild cards---like OPEC or Latin America or the Chinese/SE Asian relationship. Still it would be a lot better than simply caving in to globalization and doing nothing to counter it. Or, OTOH, acting unilaterally.

During WWII we were only allies with Russia because we shared a common foe. We were never actually friends with Russia, nor they with us. Russia was invaded by Germany and fighting for their very own survival. Russia suffered catastrophic losses of men and equipment early in the German invasion. Without Western aid the Soviet Union would have likely fell to Germany. The United States economic power was probably the biggest contributor to victory over Nazi Germany. FDR's Lend-Lease Act. was instrumental in the war. All told, Lend-Lease provided tens of billions worth of supplies to our allies. All our allies, including Russia, owe the United States a great debt of gratitude for our involvement in WWII. We basically saved their butts. How quick they seem to forget.

The Russians have never forgotten it.

The French have never forgotten it.

The Chinese have never forgotten it.

The British have never forgotten it. However, I think some of the current set of British politicians may be forgetting it, or at least appearing to in order to pander to their new Muslim population for some untold reason.
