Fox Baltimore Bomber upset with outcome of April 26 Primary

Fox Baltimore Bomb Scare: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

    Published
    2:16 pm EDT, April 28, 2016 Updated 5:59 pm EDT, April 28, 2016

A man in a panda suit who said he has a bomb strapped to his chest has caused an evacuation at Fox45 headquarters in Baltimore at around 1 p.m. on April 28. The station is the Fox network’s affiliate in the city.

Just after 3 p.m. the suspect emerged from the building and was shot four times by a Baltimore sniper. The shot was not fatal and the man was alive and conscious. No medical treatment was immediately given because he “still posed a threat,” according to police. Reporters at the scene described the suspect lying in the street while Baltimore PD robots removed his clothing. An hour after he was wounded, he was put into a police armored vehicle. He was later taken from the scene in an ambulance.

Here’s what you need to know:

    1. The Bomb Was Not Real & Was Comprised of Candy Bars

Staff at Fox Baltimore were tweeting during the incident. They were told there was a suspicious man in the building’s lobby and that he told someone inside that he had a bomb strapped to his body. WBAL’s Jayne Miller quoted a source saying the “bomb” may have been packed with candy bars. That report was later confirmed by authorities.

    Fox Baltimore reports
that the man told a security guard that he was going to “blow up” the building.

Authorities say that the suspect didn’t take his hands out of his pockets when he left the building and “had some type of device in his hand.”

    2. He Was Upset With the Outcome of the April 26 Primary

The suspect had a flash drive to give to the station, reports The Baltimore Sun’s Pamela Wood.
Fox Baltimore photographer Paul Gessler sent a tweet that confirmed none of the staff had been hurt.

Building security guard, Jourael Apostolides, told Fox Baltimore’s Shelley Orman that the suspect is “upset with the government.” It later emerged that the man had been upset with the result of the April 26 presidential primaries. His party affiliation has not been uncovered. The voting was won by Hillary Clinton for the Democratic party, defeating Bernie Sanders. While the Republicans went for Donald Trump over John Kasich and Ted Cruz.

He added that the suspect was holding a “trigger.”

After being downed by a sniper, a police spokesman said that the suspect still refused to co-operate with authorities.

    3. There Was Also a Car Fire in the Building’s Parking Lot

Fox employee Chris Berinato told the station’s reporter Shelley Orman that he saw a car on fire in the parking lot. He says he went inside to tell Apostolides when the guard told him there was a suspicious man in the lobby. Apostolides told WBAL, “My first thought was to get him out. My first instinct was to make sure he keeps his cool head.”

According to Baltimore police, the vehicle was set on fire when a rag was ignited and put in the gas tank.

Berinato described the suspect as being dressed in “some kind of body suit” and a mask. WBAL reportsthat he was also wearing combat boots.

    Fox Baltimore later reported
on their website that the fire had been extinguished.

    4. The Building Is Being Swarmed by City Police

The building is located on 41st Street just off the Jones Falls Expressway in an area known as “Television Hill.”WJZ-TV and WBAL-TV are also located in the area, the Woodberry neighborhood in northern Baltimore.

City police, tactical units and bomb squad have all descended on the building.

    5. This Incident Comes a Day After a 13-Year-Old Boy Was Shot by Baltimore Police

This incident comes a day after a 13-year-old boy was shot by city police in Baltimore, according to WJZ-TV.The shooting took place close to McKim Community Center in the northeast part of the city.

The boy with was holding a replica Beretta gun. Commissioner Kevin Davis told the media that officers pursued the teen and identified themselves before opening fire. Davis also emphasized the fact that the toy was a dead ringer for a real pistol.

Fox Baltimore’s offices are located about 5 miles north of where the teenager was shot. The young teen is expected to survive. The shooting occurred a week after the anniversary of Freddie Gray’s death at the hands of Baltimore cops in 2015.

Smith described the man as a white male, appearing to be in his 20s. Fox 45's chief meteorologist Vytas Reid told reporters that the man is still alive.

Man in Elkridge identifies son as suspect in bomb threat at Baltimore's FOX45

    by Christine Boynton
    Thursday, April 28th 2016

The father of the 25-year-old suspect who was shot by police after threatening FOX45 and barricading himself inside the building says his son was convinced the world would end on June 3. (WBFF)

BALTIMORE (WBFF) -- A man in Elkridge identified his son, Alex Brizzi, as the 25-year-old suspect who was shot by police after threatening FOX45 Thursday afternoon.

Edward Brizzi says his son was convinced the world would end on June 3.

Edward told FOX45's Shelley Orman that his son does not have a history of mental health issues, but two weeks ago had what he described as "a break" and was discovered sleeping in a neighbor's yard.

"It took seven policemen to hold him down and they took him to St. Agnes hospital," Edward said. "He says he don't remember anything. He had just broke up with his girlfriend ... it looks like he's just had mentally a breakdown ... what he was doing was probably putting himself to there thinking that he wanted to die, I think."

Back in 2012 he tried to overdose on Aleve, Edward said, and spent a couple of weeks in a hospital.

"Other than that, he's really nice kid," Edward said.

"We don't argue. We don't fight with him. He's always nice and but he just had a mental breakdown."

Edward said his son lived at home, though they didn't see him on Thursday. He said his son has bullet wounds in the neck, the left wrist, the left buttocks and the right leg.

"The one they're worried about is the one in the neck," the father said. "They're going to do exploratory surgery."

Police have not released the suspect's name publicly. Investigators say he is expected to survive.

The suspect, who was wearing a surgical mask, sunglasses and what police described as a "panda outfit onesie" with a hood and a red vest-like device underneath, set his car on fire in the station's parking lot before demanding the station air a story he brought with him on a flash drive. FOX45's security guard, who spoke with the suspect, said it had to do with government conspiracies.

The man threatened to blow up the building and police including a SWAT team and a bomb squad were dispatched to the station around 1:20 p.m. The suspect barricaded himself in the building for a time before walking outside, followed by at least four officers in tactical gear. Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith said the man had his hands in his pockets with a wire leading down his arm from the red device strapped to his chest.

Smith said the man refused to follow the officers' orders to stop and take his hands out of his pockets.
A Baltimore police counter sniper fired and struck the man, who went down in the middle of West 41st Street. Several shots were fired, although Smith couldn't confirm exactly how many. The echo of at least three shots could be heard on video that captured the shooting.

Fearing the device strapped to the man's chest was a bomb, police dispatched a robot to communicate with the man, who continued to disobey police orders.

Several minutes passed and the man was still lying in the middle of the street after being shot. Medics could not tend to his injuries because he refused to take his hands out of his pockets.

"He was described as conscious and alert, just uncooperative," Smith said. "He was saying no when we were asking him to comply."

Eventually, the man complied to police orders and the robot disarmed him of his vest.

"The device that he had was not an actually [am explosive] device," Smith said.

The red device was discovered to be chocolate candy bars wrapped in aluminum foil, held together with wiring and strapped to a motherboard, Smith said.

THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH THE SUSPECT'S FATHER WILL BE POSTED SHORTLY
