During the first two years of Bill Clinton's first term (1993-94), the Democrats controlled the Senate with 56-57 Dem Senators, and controlled the House with 258 Dems (plus 1 who caucased with the Dems). The Republicans during this period had 176 members in the House.

After last night, the Dems have 56 Senators. Four more races are too close to call but Republicans have slim leads. But it does not look like the Dems will get to 60. And the Dems will have about 255 seats in the House come January, maybe a few more.

So the totals of Democratic control of Congress in January 2009 will be about the same as in 1993-1994. Before last night we were hearing about how the GOP was going to lose by larger, or even much larger, numbers than this. Still a bad night, but this didn't happen.

Bottom line: Americans did NOT vote for amnesty last night. They, we, voted on issues of financial security, or lackthereof, and as a reflection of the incompetence of GWB.

Pelosi et al. overreach at their own peril.

I agree Populist, they may bring it up but I don't think they will get it past the Senate, and this economy it would be stupid to legalize millions with millions os Americans out of work.

1992-1993 a good percentage of the democrats where moderates. Today they are very very far left or even some marxist. We will have a marxist president. I believe with a few RINO's in the senate including McCain should kill any fillerbuster against amnesty. In the house won't be much easlier to stop this. The democrats will have a good 6 more seats and a strong majority this time in the senate.

Oh, and I forgot this part. One of the talking heads on Brit's panel was saying that one of the problems for Republicans this time was because of their negative talk about illegal immigration.

Believe it or not we had some Democrats vote against amnesty with the Republicans.

Oh, were they supposed to lie and say illegal aliens are the gift that never stops giving? More likely the problem was the the press who had endless sob stories about illegals, and the meany racists who oppose it, blah blah blah.

I wouldn't define the newly elected liberal Dems as "Marxist", liberal yes. (Bernie Sanders, now in the Senate, is a socialist.) But there are also moderate Blue Dog type Dems who knocked off Republicans as R Beck has anaylzed. Point is the Dems did not run on amnesty. That's not to say they won't try again -- perhaps even soon -- as the Hispanic Caucus, Migration Policy Institute etc. will undoubtedly push this issue soon, but amnesty is not a done deal -- only if we roll over and allow it to be.

There was a Chicago reporter this morning on C-Span...a caller called in and said that he was sad because if you watched the speech by McCain there were hardly any blacks in the crowd.

The reporter then turned this into the Republicans "biggest" problem is their racist views and it has caused them to alienate other races...he then proceeded to bash FOX for their racism and reporting they did on Obama, Hannity etc, He said they are going to have to change their ways of reporting and their views...I was Mad and sick and this crap being spewed on C-Span....so much for freedom of speech and truth in reporting.

We are in for the fight of our life to keep our freedom of speech and to stop them from turning the illegal alien problem into a racist problem. instead of the truth, that these people are breaking the law and you can not have law and order when some people believe the laws do not apply to them under the pretense of being forced to enter out country illegally out of need.
