Foes of illegal immigration come from all walks of life

Many thanks to letter-writer Paul Cariker ["Educated immigrants are not the problem," Dec. 13] for answering so well Paul Akers' narrow-minded comments about folks who oppose illegal immigration.

As for it only being "stupid" Republicans who care deeply about this issue, that's not the case here in California--where 60 percent of the general population, 40 percent of our Hispanic voters, and 50 percent of union households voted to recall our governor "because he pandered to illegals."

Recently, a Latina I know told me that her Hispanic mom is a lifelong Democrat who is dead set against illegal immigration and is ashamed of her party's leadership, which has caved in to "openborderites."

I used to be a Republican, but when the cowardly California Republican leaders dropped the issue of illegal immigration right after the amazing 60 percent victory of Proposition 187, I changed to the Independent party.

This is not about party or race or right or left. It is about common sense, national sovereignty, and economic and cultural strength.
