GOP Senators Cornyn, Alexander Oppose Vote on Sanctuary Cities

GOP Senators Cornyn, Alexander Oppose Vote on Sanctuary Cities

Forget about sanctuary cities, the U.S. Senate is becoming a sanctuary for illegal aliens.

It’s not only President Obama who refuses to recognize the murder of Kate Steinle at the hands of illegal aliens – both in public and by privately consoling the family members. According to conservative aides, Republican leaders are opposing a vote on an amendment that would put an end to liberal cities thwarting federal immigration laws, “sanctuary cities.”

"Alexander and Cornyn really pressured conservatives to back off from getting a vote on sanctuary cities amendments,” an aide told Conservative Review. “Alexander didn't want his education bill derailed but John Cornyn, despite his public comments otherwise, is terrified about the prospect of voting on eliminating sanctuary cities and offending his golden goose: Houston."

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) has introduced an amendment (no. 2146) to the pending reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, (S.1177) that would cut off all federal law enforcement grants to sanctuary cities and reallocate those funds to states and localities that comply with federal law. Sens. Sessions (R-AL) and Cruz (R-TX) have co-sponsored the amendment and Sen. Vitter (R-LA) has a similar proposal he recently introduced.

Allowing a vote on this urgent national security issue is the least GOP leaders can do after forcing conservatives to debate a liberal education bill for two weeks. Yet, according to Senate sources, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN), the floor manager of the education bill, are pulling out all the stops in order to oppose a vote on sanctuary cities. What’s more appalling, GOP leaders are allowing a vote on leftist Sen. Al Franken’s (D-MN) non-germane (not relevant to the bill at hand) amendment to grant special rights to homosexual and transgender students and threaten the religious liberty of private citizens. Traditionally when one party receives a non-germane amendment the other receives a vote on a non-germane amendment of their choosing as well.

This is part of a growing trend by GOP leaders to oppose timely and politically-winning conservative amendments, while conducting votes on far-left social engineering priorities from Democrats and continuing Harry Reid’s legacy. In April, leadership blocked an amendment from Sen. Sessions which would have closed the illegal alien family trafficking loophole in the human trafficking bill. They also blocked an amendment from Sen. Vitter to close the birthright citizenship/birth tourism loophole.

The Republican leadership huffs and puffs about 'Bama's executive amnesty, then calls their big-money Open Borders donors and lets them know that all is well. Those donors want even more surplus labor, and 'Bama - ever disdainful of the American people - is making sure that they get it.

Perfectly correct, vistalad. Until these leaders and others of their clan are eliminated from Congress, there is the republican party's platform performance as they want it. For a republican President to be truly effective that juggernaut of leadership must be destroyed. Cornyn, McConnell and Alexander were just reelected in '14 I believe. So, how do we expect to achieve change in Congress? Americans do not do wholesale slaughters of Congresses, so based upon performance of the past 50 years that would not appear to be an option having any hope.

We must have Americans of both parties (?) admit that the parties are of one breed, just different families, then come together to form and support a second party. Pretending that we have two parties has not worked well for three decades.
