Authorities arrested two men in their 50s and a woman in her 30s after finding multiple loaded long-range weapons, handguns, ballistic vests and a camouflage helmet in the vehicle.

The trio, who may be from Pennsylvania, was initially stopped for a cracked windshield, the news station added. A search of the vehicle turned up the weapons.

The Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting the investigation, a source told NBC4.

The suspects' final destination was unclear. The Holland Tunnel's New York side is located in Lower Manhattan.

Three people were arrested with multiple loaded guns, rifles and ballistic vests at the Holland Tunnel Tuesday when police stopped them for driving with a cracked windshield, authorities tell NBC 4 New York.

The three individuals, two men in their 50s and a woman in her 20s who may be from Pennsylvania, were stopped on the New Jersey side of the tunnel around 8 a.m., authorities said. A search of their vehicle revealed the weapons cache.

The guns seized included long-range weapons as well as handguns. A camouflage helmet with what appeared to be night goggles was also recovered.

Motorist in Car Packed With Guns Told Cops He Was Rushing to Save Teen, Sources Say

Guns and knives were recovered from a car stopped at the New Jersey side of the Holland Tunnel, June 21, 2016.

A motorist stopped with a trove of guns and knives in his car while heading into the Holland Tunnel en route to New York City claimed to police he was rushing to "rescue" a teenage girl who recently overdosed, sources said.

Police recovered seven guns — including rifles and handguns — as well as four knives, 10 clips of ammunition, body armor and a military-grade helmet from the bright-colored truck owned by John Cramsey, a police source said.

The number of weapons in the car raised suspicions, and the Joint Terrorism Task Force was called, but two law enforcement officials told ABC News there does not appear to be a link to terrorism.

The reason for the large number of weapons was not immediately clear.

Cramsey was stopped during Tuesday morning's rush hour at the New Jersey toll plaza for the tunnel — which runs from Jersey City to lower Manhattan — with two others, a man named Dean Smith and a 29-year-old woman.

Cramsey -- whose own daughter died from an accidental heroin overdose, according to the medical examiner -- told police he was driving to New York City to "rescue" a 16-year-old girl from a drug den, sources said.

An employee at a Pennsylvania gun range owned by Cramsey told ABC News that ever since his daughter’s recent death, Cramsey has been on a mission to save others from a similar fate.

A police source said the teenager Cramsey claimed he was headed to save told authorities, “I don’t need to be rescued.”

Police stopped the group at the toll plaza Tuesday morning because their car had a cracked windshield, Port Authority Police said.

A Port Authority police officer then spotted a gun on a seat in the car, officials said.

All three suspects were charged with weapons possession and are being held at the Hudson County, New Jersey, jail.

Police: Group Caught With Weapons In Holland Tunnel Claimed To Be On Vigilante Mission

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Several people were caught high on drugs with an arsenal of weapons during a routine traffic stop at the Holland Tunnel on Tuesday, authorities said.

As CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, two men and one woman from Pennsylvania were arrested as they passed through the tunnel around 7:40 a.m. At least one of them claimed they were vigilantes on their way to “extricate” a teenage girl who was being held by a drug dealer in Queens.

Before getting busted with the cache of weapons, police said the trio of suspects certainly was not going for subtlety when they decided to head into the Holland Tunnel.

Their big-wheeled sport-utility vehicle was hard to miss, trimmed with neon paint and plastered with decals for Higher Ground Tactical – a Pennsylvania gun range. One of the suspects, John Cramsey, is the owner of the gun range.

But it was actually an eagle-eyed Port Authority police officer posted at the toll plaza that pulled over the vehicle after noticing a crack low on their windshield.

“And upon approaching the motor vehicle, the officer observed in plain view a loaded pistol magazine,” said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police Supervisor Michael Fedorko. “He had the driver exit the vehicle, and when then driver got out, he noticed a .45-caliber handgun on the driver’s seat.”

Inside the SUV were:

  • 7 clips of ammunition for the rifle
  • 4 9mm pistols
  • 1 .45 caliber pistol, with several magazines
  • A Kevlar bullet resistant helmet with camouflage cover
  • Tactical goggles
  • Night-vision goggles
  • Body armor

Some of the guns were loaded, and police said the suspects were too. Sources said the two men in their 50s and one woman in her 20s were all under the influence when they were taken into custody.

Sources said the suspects – all from Pennsylvania – claimed they were on their way to Queens to rescue a friend who was being held hostage by a drug dealer.

Three heavily armed people have been arrested heading into New York City.

The trio were found withe several loaded guns, knives and body armour when police pulled them over for driving with a cracked windscreen.

They were held at the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, runs under the Hudson River connecting New Jersey with Manhattan.

Police say the suspects are "gun enthusiasts" have no links to terrorism, according to police.

The two men in their 50s and a woman in her 20s - thought to be from Pennsylvania - were stopped on the New Jersey side of the tunnel around 8 am, reports NBC New York.

When officers searched their vehicle they found a cache of weapons.

A search of their vehicle revealed the weapons cache.

Drugs were also found in the vehicle.

One of the suspects allegedly said they were on their was to Queens, New York, to save a friend who is on heroin and being held against her will.

Police are investigating the claims.

Trio With Long Rifles, Handguns Arrested Near Holland Tunnel Entrance Outside New York City

Police say three people, two men in their 50s and one woman in her 20s, were arrested Tuesday on the New Jersey side of New York City’s Holland Tunnel carrying several long rifles and handguns.

Police said the trio, thought to be from Pennsylvania, was stopped for having a cracked windshield. Police then searched the vehicle and found the weapons, along with a camouflage helmet and night-vision goggles, WNBC-TV reported.


The suspects have no known connection to terrorists and police said there is no risk to the country’s largest metropolitan area.
An investigation is underway.
