Hillary’s Biggest Problem Is Obama

Hillary Clinton’s policy ideas sound great — until you remember who’s president, writes Thomas Frank in The Guardian. As “a president who has accomplished little since 2011,” he says, Barack Obama “has pretty much undermined Clinton’s ability to sell us on another centrist Democratic presidency. His legacy has diluted her promise.” Her biggest problem: “It is hard to criticize power when your own leader is the most powerful person in the land.” For all the Democratic campaign themes over the years — “Keep hope alive,” “The man from Hope,” “Hope and change” — Obama’s “failure to reverse the disintegration of the middle class” has turned “this favorite Democratic cliché” into “just that: an empty phrase.”
