How do I get a job if I am not bilingual?

I am an unemployed engineer in southern California. I am currently looking for any work I can find...dish washing, raking leaves etc. Every job requires you to be bilingual. I understand that the United States does not have an official language but wouldn't this fall under some kind of workplace discrimination? I guess not.

Is there the possibility of some type of leagal action that would help this situation?

Same thing happened to me about 10 years ago....I took the test for a County of Los Angeles job....passed it with a 95 (proud to say!!!) and then couldn't be hired because I was not bi-lingual....I was bilingual....but bilingual German....not Spanish!!!!
I think that is reverse discrimination!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome!!!!! you have come to the right place

Starting with the good part of all this - Americans are fighting against everything that has bugged them for decades about what the elites, ultra rich, and employers are doing against out will IN "OUR" NATION!

We are "we the people", and we are fighting back - FINALLY - in the majority.

    Now to the discrimination . . .

That is discrimination. Nothing reverse about it.

If you are anything but a white American, then the aclu "WILL" defend you. If you are white, then you are out of luck with the aclu.

This is America, and the language we speak here is English, which is written in the federal government requirements for IMMIGRANTS coming to America LEGALLY.

Nothing about illegal aliens, who have been treated better than immigrants seeking to "be American citizens", and all treated better than even American citizens.

    So why "be" American citizens?

Right after Reagan gave amnesty in 1986 all Los Angeles papers advertised MOSTLY jobs for bilingual candidates.

Right before that in 1986, this was not an issue EVER.

If the rest of America would have heard the shouts from Californians at that time, then America would not be in the state it's in with illegal aliens not only invading America, but also gathering all they can from other nation's citizens to escort them through mexico and illegally into America.

mexico's citizens have moved from being mere invaders into the U.S.A. in their own right, but now as escorts they are full blown FELONS for EACH OFFENSE against America's laws.

Oh yes, then there's being deported and returning illegally for the 2nd time, which is an instant FELONY.

FELONS can NEVER BE AMERICAN CITIZENS!

I am bilingual in English and Spanish but here in El Paso, that has not helped me in any way to get a job. I'm pretty convinced that I'm not getting hired because I'm Anglo and this entire city is dominated by and run by Mexicans, legal and illegal.

Welcome! I know sooo many people who are in your same position. It has gotten to be epidemic here in CA and a LOT of us are finally angry about it. I dont have much advice, but looking into the discrimination aspect might help, because thats exactly what it is....

Re: How do I get a job if I am not bilingual?

Ever since Reagan signed the 1986 amnesty that he regreted from the time he signed it illegal aliens and extended family members of anchor babies have been allowed to "use" America's system against Americans.

With that ability they have literally used their language to divide Americans from their own nation.

They've set up businesses where they REQUIRE that BILINGUAL NEED ONLY APPLY, and that other-than-English language is usually spanish. Though, other nation's citizens have learned well from mexico how to invade America with their own corrupt races.

Along with their message to never hire English speaking Americans inside America, these illegal aliens and extended family members of anchor babies, all of them can set up businesses so easily in ways that Americans can never do IN THEIR OWN NATION, because America's government has stuck it to their own citizens in ways no other nation around the world does.

Americans are finally fighting angry and this type of thing "will end".

After all, God doesn't like corrupt. It's constantly failed, as written in God's Word over and over again. Many times with God's own Holy Hand in the mix to end the corruption against His own.

I don't believe you have any legal recourse. I'd move from So Cal.

If there is a valid reason to be bilingual, that is one thing. The easy way to find out why you must speak Spanish is to ask in a neutral manner. If the reason is because some Spanish speaking employees don't speak English, then you might have a case if they are accommodating them to your detriment. But if it is to work with the Spanish-speaking public, for example, then it is a valid reason. If having to speak Spanish is not work-related, I would contact the EEOC.

EEOC rules state that, generally, national origin discrimination means treating someone less favorably because that individual is from a certain place or belongs to a particular national origin group. Title VII prohibits employer actions that have the purpose or effect of discriminating against persons because of their national origin. If they are using the Spanish rule to do this, you definately have a case.

    See all the rules: http://www.eeoc.gov/policy/docs/national-origin.html

If you are certain this is discrimination, you can also look for a pro-bono lawyer. There are groups out there that also provide support if you search on reverse discrimination.

The ACLU will step in if it believes constitutional rights have been harmed, regardless of your origin or race, despite what you hear on these boards. But your situation would likely not fit what they are looking for.

You know damned well where being bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is being required to apply for a job that it is to cater to illegal alien Mexicans and other Spanish speaking illegals. Most Hispanic citizens know how to speak English so it isn't them they are catering to. To become a naturalized citizen one must know English also. Of course the argument would be made that many Hispanic citizens or legal immigrants are more "comfy" in their native tongue but so what? We should discriminate against native born English speakers in hiring practices just so Hispanics can feel "comfy"? English is our langauge, learn it and don't expect to be catered to in any other language at the expense of American jobs.

It is one thing to know, another to prove legally.
