This system, along with the winner-take-all practice used to allocate most states’ electoral votes, creates the potential for an absurd outcome. In the unlikely event that all 213 million eligible voters cast ballots, either John McCain or Barack Obama could win enough states to capture the White House with only 47.8 million strategically located votes. The presidency could be won with just 22 percent of the electorate’s support, only 16 percent of the entire population’s.
So what's the point? Our nation has a "representative government". The United States is a Republic, not a democracy. In a presidential election the "one man one vote" means the electors. Thank God for it. Otherwise the largest states such as New York and California would dominate national politics. No thanks. The founding fathers knew there would be conflicts between the most populated states and the least populated. This was even more apparent in colonial America. I do not want felons to vote. Nor children. Moreover, 40% or so of eligible voters choose not to. In 2004 only 60% of eligible voters decided for 300 million people. We have had numerous presidents elected with less than 50% of the popular vote, including JFK, Bill Clinton, GW Bush and Abe Lincoln (Lincoln got less than 40% of the popular vote). I would say the math in the above quote has been achieved many times already.

The electoral college was set up this way so that the low population states would not be dominated by high population states. I think it is a good system, like 4th Horseman says we live in a Republic, not a democracy. If you want a democracy move to Sweden.

In House races, 10 eligible voters in California, a state with many residents who cannot vote, represent 16 people in the voting booth.
Ahh but there is even more to it than this in CA. In Republican districts, 10 voters represent 12 people, in Democratic districts 10 voters represent 20 people. Why isn't she also complaining about our "undemocratic" districts in CA?
