Phone numbers with letters in them. Ours had ST for Stillwell. Downtown stores with wood floors, and they tidied them up by throwing down clean sawdust and sweeping it up. Real pickle barrels. Chickens that didn't come in plastic. But they were plucked and gutted. Metal credit cards that were pressed into the receipt, and the purchase record sent to the store's accounting dept. via pneumatic tube. Laundry chutes. How you sprinkled clothing with water and put it in a bag before ironing. Back then, irons got hot enough to scorch cotton. A washer that had a rubber wringer. Toilets with tanks up high, you pulled a chain. Tubs with feet. We had one of the first blow dryers - it was metal with a wooden handle and weighed a ton. Record players. We had the first color TV in our neighborhood - the neighbors came in to gape at it. You could rake your autumn leaves out to a pile in the curb and burn them.

I remember when we gawked in amazement at the technological marvel that was Pong.
    Played it for hours!

Oh, I loved all of that!!!! We had a party line with my Grandparents...Grandma would always listen in and yell at us to get off of the phone. What are PF Flyers? Gym shoes? How about Butch wax? For furniture? The milk was the best back then. Great memories MD!
Butch wax was for "flt top hair cut" to make the front stand up. I had to waer one up to the age of 9-10.

I remember. I think I must be older than all of you.
Gosh. Let me get my walker.

Butch Wax was hair cream for a crew cut on a guy.

    Crockett,
I think I might have even you.
I still stand at the Anthem and put my hand on my heart.
We used to start the day at school with the Pledge and a Prayer.
And it did not even have to be a moment of silence.

I liked Teaberry Gum the best.
    And Archie comic books.
And going to the beach in the summer.
And cooking hot dogs in the fire place when stuck in a snow storm.
And being able to ride your bike around the neighborhood.
    OMG. And Halloween...

I was also in an iron lung because I contracted polio in 1951.
So, I really worry about illegals coming over without health checks.
    So, how old am I...

My first stockings were not panty hose - you needed garters. Gloves to church - and hats! My rock collection kit had samples - including a chunk of asbestos you could feel and flake off fibers. Fizzies. The Ed Sullivan show. My Radio Flyer wagon. Keds with rubber toe caps. Glasses with points like in the Far Side cartoon, with embedded glitter. Tangee natural lipstick (you can still buy it). Lustercreme shampoo.

    Daily home delivered newspapers?

    When did they go away?

Maybe you mean daily home delivered mail?
It's like hell vomited and the Bush administration appeared.

I also liked Teaberry gum the best. And on halloween, we would take pillowcases and go far and wide collecting candy - nothing to fear.

    Mountain Dog,

Thank you. I loved my skate key.
I loved all these things about America.
Thank you for helping us remember why we are all
trying so hard to keep it in our memories.
I regret that my children do not know how much fun it
was to grow up and have fun....to play outside, go trick or treatin'
and ride a bike by yourself...
