A wealthy upstate widow allegedly turned her multimillion-dollar mansion into a “forced labor” camp where her helpless immigrant maid worked 17-hour days for years while sleeping in a closet.
Annie George, whose real-estate mogul husband, Mathai, died in a 2009 plane crash, allegedly made the woman cook meals, clean the 30,000-square-foot estate and care for the family’s six children, according to a federal criminal complaint.
The maid — who has been identified in court papers only as “V.M.” — told officials she spent her nights sleeping on the floor of a closet in the children’s bedroom.

LOCKUP: Annie George allegedly kept an Indian-born maid captive and working 17-hour days cleaning and caring for children in this 34-room Saratoga County mansion until federal agents stepped in last year.

The maid said she rarely left her employer’s mansion in Rexford, Saratoga County, which has 34 rooms, five bathrooms and 10 bedrooms and sits on a 12-acre property.
The servant, who is an illegal immigrant from India, told officials that she took the job in 2005 with the promise of a $1,000-a-week salary. In nearly six years, however, she was paid only $29,000, a criminal complaint said.
The woman speaks only in an Indian dialect that was understood by George, who also came from India.
Her labor allegedly continued without a personal or sick day from October 2005 until April 27, 2011, when federal Homeland Security agents went to George’s mansion and demanded she release the woman.
George first tried to hide her in the basement, but eventually relented and handed her over.
George was released on her own recognizance Tuesday on charges of encouraging an illegal alien to live in the United States. Despite the maid’s working conditions, George has not been charged with slavery.
George’s lawyer, Donald Kinsella, would not comment on the charges, but told The Post: “The woman was not a servant, and she [George] wasn’t keeping her in the house or anything else.”

Annie George Accused Of Enslaving Undocumented Immigrant, V.M., In Rexford Mansion

A wealthy upstate New York woman is being accused of breaking immigration laws by keeping an illegal immigrant as her servant and forcing her to work inhumane hours for barely any pay.

The maid, identified as V.M. in official records, describes working grueling 17-hour days and taking care of six children, all while being forced to live inside a closet for nearly six years.

Speaking through Hindi translators, V.M. said she was rarely allowed to leave the residence and had limited contact with her family back in India.

The accused woman, 39-year old Annie George and widow of Mathai Kolath George who died in a plane accident in 2009, hired V.M. from India and initially promised to pay her $1000 per month. But V.M. claims she has only been paid $29,000 since and investigators are saying the woman is entitled to $77,000 for the last two years and about $206,000 for the entire six years of employment.

The minimum wage for New York State is $7.25 per hour for a standard 40-hour work week, which calculates into George only reimbursing the maid $.85 per hour.

Exacerbating the charges is George's apparent colossal wealth, which boasts a 34-room mansion, helicopter pad, a massive solarium, and glass elevator.

George appeared in court earlier this week and was permitted to go on the basis of her own recognizance. Her lawyer commented on the allegations, "We just dispute what's alleged in the complaint. There's several exaggerations, gross errors."

    Fultonville hotel subject of lawsuit

    February 9, 2013

By ARTHUR CLEVELAND , The Leader Herald

FULTONVILLE - Choice Hotels International is suing the Fultonville Hospitality Group and its owner for allegedly continuing to use the trademarked Econo Lodge name after the Fultonville group had been let go by the franchise.

Annie George, owner of the Fultonville Hospitality Group, after her husband, Mathai K. George's, death in a plane crash in 2009, is being sued by Choice Hotels after she allegedly continued to use the Econo Lodge name after they were given a notice of termination in August 2011.

According to the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Utica, the termination was caused by a failure to rectify a July 29 breach of material obligations under the franchise agreement. This prohibited the Fultonville group from using anything owned or bearing the logo of Choice Hotel.

Also, George was required to pay back more than $15,000 in cash for past due franchise fees and more than $26,000 for the remaining payments for the franchise, according to the lawsuit.

Choice is seeking damages based on trademark violations and unfair competition.

George, a resident of Rexford, Schenectady County, made news in the Capital Region last year after she was charged with breaking immigration law by allegedly keeping an illegal alien as a servant in George's mansion.

In July, U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe dismissed the case, in which George was accused of keeping the Indian woman, identified only as V.M., beyond the time of her visa and underpaying her for cooking, cleaning and caring for six children.

After a complaint was filed anonymously, immigration agents removed the woman from her mansion in 2011.

Sharpe last year said the prosecution could bring a new indictment.
