Question Illegal Immigrants Medical Billing and Insurance Companies

Something to ponder about your insurance premiums and medical care billing using illegal immigration to jack up your medical and insurance bills beyond belief.

Remember, people that pay with insurance never see the medical bills.

Through the years myself and everyone else assumed that illegal immigration was driving up health costs and this is with no doubt true. But what is happening also ...is the hospitals, insurance companies and corporate doctors are tacking on millions upon millions more to medical bills the insurance companies pay and the patients never sees.

Employers that use illegal immigrant labor to cut labor costs are paying higher insurance premiums to insurance companies because the friends and families of illegal immigrants that are illegal immigrants plus the working illegal immigrants use the emergency room for medical care. The hospitals overbill the insurance companies to cover the uninsured illegal immigrants, the insurance companies pay this overcharge then raise insurance premiums that the employers have to pay to stay in business. So all the cheap illegal alien labor savings are paid out in some form by employers to insurance companies which doesn't make cheap illegal alien labor so cheap. Then the insurance companies tack on millions more to boot and use the illegal immigrants as a excuse to boost their profits.

All patients that use insurance to pay their medical bills never see the actual charges because the insurance companies are sent the bill to pay. Most U.S citizens have some form of insurance and the uninsured U.S. citizens that use the emergency room don't even bother worrying about the medical bills they get because they can't pay them and they are at a loss no matter what. The poor that use welfare type medical payments never see the bills and the state pays them blindly getting reimbursed by the federal government. This is odd because the state knows there is loads of fraud in the medical system and they just keep paying. I'm wondering if the states are overcharging the federal government for millions more just like the hospitals are overcharging millions to the insurance companies and the insurance companies are squeezing millions out of the consumer. The feds just print more money or something?

I've read several stories of people that were horrified at the medical bills they received when the insurance companies short paid the hospitals and the hospitals sent the unpaid portion of the bills to the patient. These people crapped their pants at the $50,000 dollars they were getting charged for a routine surgery that should have only cost a few thousand (in the area of $3000) .

One uninsured person got charged $6000 for a 3 day stay in the hospital and another $8000 for supplies. All the doctors, lab tests and radiology were billed separately apart from the $14,000 hospital bill for an additional $6000 dollars. If the doctors and labs are charging $6000 combined for the treatment why is the hospital charging $14,000 for 3 days of laying in a bed and a nurse?

Just makes me think of all the overcharges that are being paid by the insurance companies to the hospitals that the patient never sees. I know illegal immigration is an issue driving up medical costs but these hospitals, corporate doctors, radiologists and labs are tacking on millions more using illegal immigration as the cover to milk the cow so to speak.

The politicians are completely aware that the cost of illegal alien health care is causing the health care cost for American citizens to skyrocket, causing affordable health care to be impossible without some form of health insurance.

Obama Care seeks to fully cover illegal aliens, and make this a 'free benefit,' further eroding the quality of health care.

Whenever elected officials try to stop this travesty, the employers and Mexican PACs lobby against them and win.

It is a LOSE/LOSE for America, and is another major contributor to us now falling helplessly into being a 3rd world nation, just like Mexico.

I turn our insurance premiums have all tripled. Why they won't ask Mr. and Mrs. Obama why they can't practice law anymore is beyond my comprehension. I've read it's, because of scams just like this one.

    Immigration Reform – Healthcare

Posted on March 13, 2012 by JL

Illegal immigration exists because people believe that their lives will be better off by coming to this country. Our current immigration policies are an incentive for foreigners to sneak into the country illegally. Why not come if we’re opening our doors to government healthcare, free public education and jobs?

To stop the flow of illegal immigration which costs our country at least $100 billion a year, we must remove the incentives and benefits for illegal immigrants to come here. The U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted the Constitution as to giving any persons here in this country many of the Constitutional rights enjoyed by this country’s actual citizens. So any reform we brainstorm cannot be based on taking away their constitutional rights.

However, government services are not constitutional rights. They are services provided for the citizen of this country. We can start our reforms by preventing illegal immigrants from using most government services. No schools if they are not citizens. No welfare or social services if they are not citizens. Certainly no unemployment benefits for illegal immigrants. No Social Security or Medicare or Medicaid. No drivers licenses. Nothing. The only government services that illegal immigrants should have access to are public defenders, prisons and emergency medical care. Today we will focus on medical care for illegal immigrants.

Current federal law says that emergency medical care cannot be denied to anyone. That means anyone can walk into an ER and receive medical treatment if their life is in danger. This law is abused by the poor and by illegal immigrants who use the emergency room to receive medical care for non life-threatening illnesses and injuries. Emergency medical care is very expensive and is a major cause in driving up health care costs for the country. According the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, about half of all emergency care services are uncompensated. That means the doctors and hospitals do not get paid for these services. Billions of dollars in revenue are lost and that cost is distributed to the patients who do pay making health care more expensive for everyone. In addition to costs, illegal aliens also take time and resources away from U.S. citizens who need emergency care. The more people in the ER, the longer the wait.

What we can we do to prevent illegal immigrants from using emergency medical care for non emergency related illnesses or injuries like a sprained ankle or a sore throat? We can start by enacting a law that will deport any illegal immigrant after they receive their medical treatment from an emergency care facility. We will provide the medical care that the illegal immigrant/criminal needs, but we will deport them immediately after they receive their treatment. We will pay for the costs of deportation with a tax-for-services on illegal immigrants. Any assets, liquid or otherwise, will be collected as payment for both the medical care and cost of deportation. Any assets in excess of these costs will be taxed at the current highest marginal income tax rate with the remaining funds returned to the illegal immigrant after they have been deported.

For example, an illegal immigrant that breaks his foot goes to the emergency room. The doctors set his leg and set him on the path to recovery. The cost of this service comes out to $10,000. When the illegal immigrant cannot prove his citizenship, he will be taken into custody and deported. The cost of deportation, that is to arrest, detain and deport each illegal immigrant comes out to about $12,500 per person. The government will examine the illegal immigrant’s assets and use those assets to pay for the costs of deportation and the $10,000 in medical fees. If the illegal immigrant had $8,000 in cash and savings and a car worth $15,000, than those assets would be collected as a tax-for-service for the medical costs and deportation. $22,500 (the medical costs plus the costs of deportation) would be subtracted from the combined assets of $23,000 leaving $500. That $500 would be taxed at the current highest marginal tax rate 35% which would equal $175 in tax revenue leaving the illegal alien with $325 to spend once he or she got back to their native country.

The left may find this type of law inhumane and label it heartless. We find it more heartless to spend money that we don’t have on people who should not even be here in the first place. My family comes first. Not some foreigner who snuck into the country on a banana boat. This law will not prevent illegal aliens from receiving medical care. It just delineates a cost for service. Some critics may claim that this type of law will prevent people who need medical help from getting it because they will fear that they will be deported. Good. That is exactly the point. If your life is in immediate danger, most people will seek the help to save their lives even if it means deportation. For the few who don’t, they will die. By removing any benefits or incentives, you make the United States of America a less desirable place to be for illegal immigrants.

This cost-of-service idea can be expanded to any government service. This type of immigration reform ideas will lead to fewer and fewer illegal immigrants sneaking into the country and may even lead to illegal immigrants self-deporting themselves because there is no point for most people to stay in a hostile environment with no benefits.

What do you think of this idea specifically regarding illegal immigrants and emergency health care? Do you have any ideas to suggest?

Kennedy says studies have shown that a patient using a health center decreases his or her health costs by 30 percent, because of preventive primary care. He says this is especially significant in serving the migrant populations who follow harvest work across the country.
    HEALTH FACTS ON HISPANIC IMMIGRANTS

    • Hispanics have the highest uninsured rates of any racial or ethnic group within the United States.
    • Hispanics have higher rates of obesity than non-Hispanic whites.
    • Mexican-American adults are two times more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to have been diagnosed with diabetes by a physician.
    • In 2001 Hispanic women were 2.2 times as likely as non-Hispanic white women to be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
    • Mexican-American mothers were 2.6 times more likely than non-Hispanic white mothers to begin prenatal care late—in the third trimester or not at all.

Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health.

“On documented migrant workers—Hispanic workers who are here legally—when they’re on the farm working, they may actually be eligible, in some instances, for Medicaid. However, because they’re migrants and they cross state lines, and because Medicaid is state-specific, there’ve been challenges,” Kennedy said. “The sheer act of moving around the country from state to state invalidates the Medicaid portability. And so health centers are forced to serve these Medicaid individuals as uninsured folks and receive no reimbursement for their care. While they should be insured, they oftentimes are not insured, and have a high percentage of uninsured people despite many being eligible for public assistance. So, even on the documented side, there are insurance challenges.”
Patient insurance coverage is vital because it can make or break a health center.
“In general, a new health center [federal] grant is $600,000. And we’ve historically seen health centers serve about 40 percent uninsured. You hope that the rest of your patients are on Medicaid or privately insured or on Medicare or you get state grants or some other payer source comes up. The grant doesn’t change even if a large influx of uninsured people show up at your door,” Kennedy said.

HAPPY2BEME: It's my understanding that illegals are specifically excempt from the requirements of Obamacare. They are not required to purchase insurance under the plan. So, in effect, they need not pay for insurance and are free to continue using the emergency room as their personal clinics.

Correct. They and the congress, senate, and president are all exempt from having to pay health insurance under obamacare ..

Aliens who are “lawfully present in the United States” are subject to the heath insurance mandate and are eligible, if otherwise qualified, to participate in the high-risk pools and the exchanges, and they are eligible for premium credits and cost-sharing subsidies.

PPACA expressly exempts unauthorized (illegal) aliens from the mandate to have health coverage and bars them from a health insurance exchange. Unauthorized aliens are not eligible for the federal premium credits or cost-sharing subsidies. Unauthorized aliens are also barred from participating in the temporary high-risk pools.

To enforce the alien eligibility requirements under PPACA, the act requires the Secretary of
Health and Human Services to establish a program to determine whether an individual who is to
be covered in the individual market by a qualified health plan offered through an exchange, or
who is claiming a premium tax credit or reduced cost-sharing, is a citizen or national of the
United States or an alien lawfully present in the United States.

    Hey Steve,

I've seen actual hospital bills for major treatments and beleive you me hospitals, radiology and labs charge whatever they please.

Everyone thinks these overcharges are because of illegal immigrants and this thought is true but:

"The medical profession is charging way over the acutual cost of illegal immigration".

You talk about pure greed, well, it has reached out medical industry to the point where they charge the insurance companies 15 to 20 times the cost of the treatment in a hospital. The insurance companies don't check the charges on each bill and just shortpay the hospitals and the hospital gladly accept the short payment. Theshort payment is still at a great profit over the actual cost of illegal immigrants.

The insurance compainies raise your rates and short pay the greedy hospitals knowing that the hospital is making phony charges to the patients. The insurance companies get the bill and the patient never realizes that the most of the hospital charges are phony and are just happy they had insurance to pay off the hospital. The insurance companies are making huge profits and short pay the hospitals telling the hospitals this is a collaboration and you can't have all of our profits.

The collaboration is: The insurance companies get to raise their premiums blaming the rise on rising medical costs, The hospitals get to blame the rise in medical costs on illegal immigrants that congress won't get rid of. Congressional leaders are more than likely invested some way or the other in insurance company and medical stocks either directly or through an investment broker like the "Texas Pacific Group". If congress has monitary investments in investment companies like the Texas Pacific Group they can claim they didn't have anything to do with investing in hospitals and insurance companies that are ripping off the public.

My own thoughts of Obama Care is that since it serves no purpose and will not work adding millions to the U.S. debt that it's only purpose is to get "Everyone" paying high medical and insurance rates so people (democrats) that are heavily invested in health care and insurance stocks can get extremely rich. Richer than they already are and build their own wealth empires larger than Bill Gates. Think About It.
