    Description

Dr. William F. Ford says that the economic issues related to the immigration debate are largely ignored in favor of focusing on the legal, political, social and cultural aspects of the issue. However, it’s vital that economic considerations related to immigration—including the major roles that both legal and illegal immigrants contribute to the labor force and production and spending—be factored into the discourse, he says.

Newswise — When it comes to illegal versus legal immigration in the United States, it’s crucial to consider the positive influence and impact that the nation’s 12 million-plus undocumented workers have on the U.S., says Dr. William F. Ford, holder of the Weatherford Chair of Finance at Middle Tennessee State University.

“Based on the pure economics of this situation, it would be much better if we had an unheated discussion of what these people (illegal immigrants) contribute (to the U.S. economy) and why they’re here, rather than just appealing to people’s gut instinct to say it’s illegal (for them to be here), let’s round’ em up and throw them out,â€

People generally wait to have children until they can afford to raise them with the same level of comfort that they had experienced as children. The more people that there are competing for jobs with a particular skill set the lower the resulting level of pay.

Americans have a higher quality of life than most of the other countries people are immigrating from especially the illegals. That puts Americans at a huge disadvantage because the legal immigrants and illegal aliens are doing better as soon as they sart working and so they have children very young.

What Ford is proposing is a self fulfiling pernicious problem. It is horribly unfair to the families of American workers.

The Americans feel they can not afford their children because their salaries are down. Illegal aliens feel they can start to have children because their own salaries are up.

As Americans work they pay taxes which go to the expense of raising immgrant children and children born to immigrants.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

The only accurate part of this tripe is that there's 12 million WORKERS, meaning that there's probably 30 million TOTAL.

Yep, I agree. It's basically hogwash. I've read a lot of comments recently on the financial blogs that the Federal Reserve system should be eliminated and after reading this piece I completely agree. The Federal Reserve is apparently staffed by know-nothing "nothing matters but the economy" myopic fools who don't even seem to have much grasp of the economy -- at least as to how it affects the average American with the Fed's primary concern being with top-of-the-heap business and government folks.

Richard has some very good points that I want to add to.

Illegals will continue to breed at alarming rates because it is LUCRATIVE for them to do so. If these children were not given birthright citizenship, they would not receive welfare, therefore reducing the number of children born to illegals. AMERICAN welfare system is the Holy Grail to illegals.

Americans expect to have to pay to support their own children. Illegals expect that we American taxpayers have to pay for their offspring. Take away the welfare provisions along with birthright citizenship and I guarantee this will stop!

So? What are we waiting for?

This isn't economics at all, except as it may be distorted by our educational establishment elite who argue that university degrees are the cure-all for a prosperous America. Nurses, doctors, marine biologists, agricultural engineering, and the like aside---higher education is turnig out more useless wads every year who expect big salaries.

So is a big population (such as the US' 300 million and increasing) the secret to prosperity? Look at this list of " Most Liveable"countries and their corresponding populations:
    1. Norway 4.6 million
    2. Iceland .3 million
    3. Australia 20.4 miilion
    4. Ireland 4.1 million
    5. Sweden 9.0 million
(fron UN Human Development Report, 2006)

France has 60 million, Italy 58 million, Germany has 82 million, New Zealand only 4 million people. My gosh, how do they do it without 20 million plus illegals? Incredible!
