IRS Paid Millions of Dollars in Bonuses to “Employees with Nonpayment of Taxes"

The IRS Admits Agency Leaders Paid Millions of Dollars in Bonuses to “Employees with Substantiated Conduct Issues Including Nonpayment of Taxes”

    Today's News
    Zoom Out Zoom In
    By Joe Calandra Jr.

According to yesterday’s edition of The Washington Post, an internal IRS review revealed that between October 2010 and December 2012, the agency paid over $2.8 million to roughly 2,800 workers with known conduct and integrity issues.

Recently, Treasury Inspector General (IG) for Tax Administration, Russell George, admitted that IRS leaders paid bonuses to individuals who were:
“Employees with Substantiated Conduct Issues Including Nonpayment of Taxes”

That enormous sum of cash happened to include payments of no less than:
“$1 million in cash awards for roughly 1,100 employees with federal tax-compliance problems.”

The IG told reporters that it isn’t IRS policy to withhold payment of bonuses to employees who fail to pay their taxes; however, he also said that this apparent hypocritical rule creates:
“…Conflict with the IRS’s charge of ensuring the integrity of the system of tax administration.”

This latest admission will undoubtedly add fuel to the proverbial fire of Republican legislators condemning government employees for refusing to pay taxes.
    According to The Post’s report:

“…In 2011, about 3.6 percent of the government’s three million civilian employees owed back-taxes totaling more than $1 billion, according to IRS data.
Last year, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) sponsored a bill that would have required agencies to fire employees with ‘seriously delinquent’ tax debt. The measure died in the House after winning approval from the chamber’s Oversight and Government Reform Committee.”
