Ivanka Trump: College isn’t the only job path; 'Find something new'

In a new bid to kick-start the economy and steer younger people to good jobs that don’t require a $120,000 college degree, the Ad Council, Apple, the White House, and other sponsors are unveiling a new campaign urging potential job seekers to “find something new.”

The campaign is a product of the 18-month-old effort led in part by White House senior adviser Ivanka Trump to make apprenticeships and other training programs just as attractive and far less expensive than higher education, viewed as the path to a top-paying job.

“While we celebrate and encourage American innovation, we recognize the responsibility of both the public and private sectors to invest in American workers and ensure that they are reconnected with good jobs and prepared for the future,” she said.

The ads highlight job training programs from several companies and are aimed at some 18 million who lost jobs due to the coronavirus crisis and younger people considering college or a job.

The campaign came out of the White House’s Workforce Advisory Council and the Pledge to America’s Workers.

It includes government agencies and private sector companies such as high-tech firms, including Apple and IBM, and others, including Home Depot, Walmart, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. It is part of President Trump’s “Pledge to American Workers.”

The ads show people of all colors and ethnicities talking about getting a job, changing dull careers, and getting involved in two-year training programs and apprenticeships.

The campaign, on TV and social media, directs people to FindSomethingNew.org, a website with resources to help students and adults “identify and pursue the right path for their career goals.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “Now, more than ever, we need to ensure that everyone has the tools they need to succeed and seize new opportunities. To invest in our future, we have to invest in people, in education, and the many paths to a well-paying job or starting a new business. This initiative is about empowering people across the nation to discover a more hopeful future for themselves and their families.”

Trump added, “There has never been a more critical time for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to be aware of the multiple pathways to career success and gain the vocational training and skills they need to fill jobs in a changing economy.”

Later on Tuesday morning, Trump participated in a virtual roundtable to kick off the campaign with Ginni Rometty, executive chairman of IBM and Apple’s Cook.

The campaign is privately funded, mostly by corporations involved in the effort and the Ad Council.

Said Lisa Sherman, president of the Ad Council, “The job market has been shaken in ways none of us have ever seen. Many Americans need a new way forward, and developing their career skills can expand their opportunities. Our Find Something New campaign,
