Kearney NE Hub-Giving young illegal immigrants opportunity

    Giving young illegal immigrants opportunity

HUB OPINION | Posted: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 3:00 pm

Since early August, thousands of illegal immigrants brought as youths to the United States have flocked to take advantage of the Obama administration’s plan to grant residency and work permits. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program’s success is an indication that many illegal aliens greatly desire to have legal status and that, provided the means; they’ll leap at the opportunity.

Thousands have applied at embassies for passports and documents they’ll need.

As many as 1.7 million could be eligible, according to the Migration Policy Institute and Pew Hispanic Center. The Department of Homeland Security, which handles immigration matters, estimated 1.04 million would apply in the first year, and of those, 890,000 might be accepted.

The program is open to illegal immigrants now age 15 to 31 who: were brought to the U.S. before age 16; have lived here continuously for five years; have no serious criminal convictions; are enrolled in or have completed high school or have served in the U.S. military. After the program was announced, requirements were expanded to include those in GED or certain job-training programs.

The cost to apply is $465, but youths are paying the fee because if they are successful, they will get a two-year work permit and legal residency. It is not a path to citizenship.

Opponents of the program point at high national unemployment rates and complain it could be giving jobs to illegal immigrants that Americans could perform.

Such claims are built on the mistaken notion that temporarily legal immigrants could simply walk into jobs unavailable to Americans. But illegal immigrants appeal to employers because they must work off the books and can’t complain about employer violations of wage and hour laws.

Opponents also claim that Obama has been soft on immigration, but Obama is on track to deport more illegal immigrants in his first term than his predecessor, George W. Bush, did in two terms.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program is imperfect. Even its name is awkward.

However, it seems reasonable and logical in contrast to mass roundups and expulsions that hardliners advocate.

These kids, now working legally, will still be competition. If there are 50 jobs available and 300 applicants..., we do NOT need any more damned people competing!!!!! Too many people, not enough jobs. It doesn't matter how innocent it makes them sound, they are still taking jobs that they shouldn't have in the first place!!

Reasonable to give away our jobs while millions are unemployed???? Logical to give away the job that belongs to an American citizen??? We are hardliners for wanting our laws enforced? There is something terribly wrong here.

It has already came to light that the Obama administration is fudging the deportation numbers!
