On Monday, Rep. Steve King highlighted a key problem regarding the unsupervised youths illegally entering the U.S. in record numbers.

In the last floor speech before the House adjourned for the day, the Iowa Republican said that around 57,000 Central American teens and younger children had entered the U.S. across its southern border, mainly into Texas.

That number was as of June 15th. The exodus of kids from Central America into the U.S. started in earnest last fall.

But here’s what King emphasized about these kids coming mainly from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala: “Two-thirds of them are prime gang-recruitment age.”

King believes that 40,000 youths in that age range have entered the U.S. illegally. Someone in their mid-teens is seen as being prime gang-recruitment age. And some of these teens end up residing in Los Angeles, where gang life is rampant.

However, King stressed that in no way should his remarks be seen as a lack of compassion for the displaced children entering the U.S.

But he added that compassion also should extend to the American people who could become the victims of gang crimes. King said many of these poor teen migrants are highly vulnerable to the temptations of gang life and some will become involved in crimes.

King added that he knows of a Virginia woman who, upon entering the U.S. illegally and residing in Virginia, wired money to a smuggler who tried to bring the woman’s child to Virginia.

But after U.S. border authorities halted the transfer, the federal government, following a court hearing, ended up delivering the young child to her mother after all.

In King’s view, the federal government completed the very crime that the detained smuggler tried to carry out. While King wishes this kind of event was rare, he understands it happens all too often.
He said: “Thousands and thousands of times this federal government is completing the crime of unlawful entry into the U.S.”

He went on to say that while local and federal law enforcement at the border is doing its best, “The rules of engagement prevent them from having a cohesive policy to secure the border.”

The Congressman concluded that Congress should simply pass a resolution to encourage the governors of the border states to act on their own like Texas is doing—to secure the border now.

King declared: “It’s the only way we’re going to secure the border; this president [Obama] will not.”

Meanwhile, Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar ["Qway-yar"] announced that Hidalgo County in south Texas has received $4.7 million dollars in federal funds from the Homeland Security Department’s “Stonegarden” program.

Cuellar’s news release stated: “These additional funds will help reimburse local law [enforcement] as they address the humanitarian crisis . . . at our southern border.”

$4.7 million dollars represents an increase of about $1.3 million compared to the amount from Fiscal Year 2013.

Statewide, Texas just received $23.1 million in law-enforcement funding. That’s an increase of about $5 million.

Ironically, the House on Monday passed several bills pertaining to the Homeland Security Department and cyber-security. That may be necessary, but with the August recess of Congress nearly here, perhaps Congress should first follow through on real border security.

And once Congress does that, some say that lawmakers should turn their attention to the Central American Free Trade Agreement which Congress itself approved. The key thing to explore is whether CAFTA has so damaged Central America’s economy that the illegal migrants are economic refugees.

Congressman Walter Jones just told WHDT that he sees CAFTA as a contributing factor in the border crisis, along with drug-cartel crime waves. So, maybe the CAFTA angle should not be ignored.
