Lou Dobbs Tonight
Thursday June 7, 2007

Tonight, the Senate’s immigration bill hangs in the balance,
and the so-called grand compromise can blow up at any minute.
We’ll have full coverage from Capitol Hill on the latest
political maneuvering in the Senate.

The Senate passed an amendment in the dead of night that could
be the beginning of the end for President Bush’s guest worker
program. The Senate voted 49 to 48, approving a measure that
will end the guest worker program, which would permit 200,000
guest workers a year into the United States, after five years.
We’ll have a special report on how that vote could impact the
Senate’s amnesty agenda.

More and more guest workers are lured to the United States by
employers promising decent paying jobs. But many of those
workers wind up in oppressive employment situations. Join us
tonight, when we’ll have a full report on companies exploiting
foreign workers, breaking promises and in many cases,
defrauding foreign employees.

Big Business is gearing up to weaken the tough employer
sanctions included in the Senate’s amnesty legislation.
Provisions included in the bill would require employers to
check the legal status of the people they employ. Business
groups say that provision is too burdensome. We’ll have a
special report.

Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa says cooperation with the
federal government is necessary to crack down on gang violence,
but that arrests alone won’t solve the problem. But while
speaking before the Senate Judiciary Committee on gang
abatement, the mayor failed to address that Los Angeles is a
sanctuary city that prevents officers from questioning the
immigration status of gang members. We’ll have a full report.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) is not in favor of the
Senate's grand compromise on immigration. At the very least, he
wants his amendment added that would force illegal aliens given
amnesty to pay into a healthcare plan designed to offset the
cost to U.S. taxpayers. The Senator joins Lou.

And, a House Committee today examines why exploiting guest
workers in this country hurts American workers as well. We'll
have that special report.
