Is John McCain a "Natural Born Citizen" as the US Constitution requires ?

Interesting questions have been raised. Has anyone seen a definite answer to this ?

Section 1 of Article II of the Constitution contains the clause:

“ No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. â€

His father was serving in the Navy when he was born.

John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone on August 29, 1936. His father was Admiral John McCain II, who became commander-in-chief of the Pacific forces in 1968. Admiral McCain later ordered the bombing of Hanoi while his son was in prison. His grandfather was Admiral John S. McCain, Sr., the famous commander of aircraft carriers in the Pacific under Admiral William F. Halsey in World War II .

The official end will come at noon on Dec. 31, when the U.S. honors a 22-year-old treaty and hands the Panama Canal—and the responsibilities that come with it— to the Republic of Panama.

THE CANAL GRADUALLY BECAME a source of bad relations. Anti-U.S. riots in the 1960s sparked negotiations for a new treaty. On Sept. 1, 1977, after a one-vote victory in the Senate, President Carter signed the Panama Canal Treaties. The legislation called for the step-by-step transfer of the canal to the government of Panama beginning on Oct. 1, 1979, and officially ending on Dec. 31, 1999

ok, ms naive here again. What makes you think he isn't a "Natural Born Citizen"?

What does natural born citizen mean? Born on US soil? Or does it also include children born to US citizens outside of the US? I think it probably also includes the latter.

But we should still give McCain grief over it because he has twisted the 14th Amendment to give citizenship to illegal alien babies, he has said everyone born in the US is a Citizen. So we should continue that claim and say under the 14th Amendment natural born citizens are ONLY those "born in the United States". Since he claims everyone born in the US is a citizen we should say "then also under the 14th Amendment ONLY those born in the US can be President".

I think he probably is considered natural born, but the argument is as follows:

He was born August 29, 1936 in the Panama Canal Zone, to two U.S. citizens. It's a common misunderstanding that the zone was a U.S. territory - in fact, the U.S. had lease rights, but not territorial rights. And according to some lawyers who work in this field, past citizens in the Canal Zone - again, born to U.S. citizens - have not been considered "natural born."

McCain was born August 29, 1936 at the Coco Solo Air Base. For citizen purposes, when on active duty abroad, the military hospital is considered American soil for citizenship purposes of the child as long as one parent was active duty and stationed there. prior to 1941, the military member had to be married to the mother of the child and she had to be a US citizen. I pieced this together from a number of websites.

My daughter, now 3 years of age, was born in Philippines. I am a native born US Citizen. My wife is a Filipino citizen. My daughter was born a Filipino citizen, but because I am an American citizen and my principal residency has been in the United States, my daughter was eligible to be declared a US citizen by application to the US Embassy Consular Office in Manila. As long as one of the parents is an American citizen and has kept primary residence in the US, a child is eligible for citizenship irregardless of where he/she is born. The rules on residency are less strict for US Citizen military personnel.

My wife and her two previously born children have since immigrated, LEGALLY, the US about 2 years ago.
