Monmouth University is out with a new poll ahead of Michigan’s Republican primary contest tomorrow. It shows Donald Trump maintains a solid lead in that state.
The results, which were gathered through surveys taken Thursday through Sunday, show Donald Trump in the lead with 36 percent support, followed by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at 23 percent, Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) with 21 percent, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) with 13 percent among respondents.
Among very conservative voters, Cruz gets 46 percent support to Trump’s 26 percent, according to the poll results. Among “somewhat” and “moderate” conservatives, Trump bests his rivals with 44 and 36 percent, respectively.
The race has narrowed significantly over the past couple of days.
“In interviews conducted Thursday and Friday, Trump held a solid lead with 39 percent support compared to 22 percent for Cruz, 17 percent for Kasich, and 14 percent for Rubio. The race was much tighter in Saturday and Sunday interviews at 32 percent for Trump, 26 percent for Kasich, 25 percent for Cruz, and 12 percent for Rubio,” the Monmouth University release said.
In a hypothetical head-to-head scenario, Cruz bests Trump 48-41 percent.
In another hypothetical head-to-head, Rubio beats Trump narrowly, 46-45. If Rubio were to drop out of the race, his voters would go 3-to-1 for Ted Cruz, according to the survey.
71 percent of Republicans said they would support Donald Trump against Hillary Clinton in a general election. 9 percent said they will support Hillary Clinton, another 9 percent would not vote for either, 4 percent would choose “other,” and 7 percent are undecided about the hypothetical match up.
14 percent of those surveyed said they were undecided. 13 percent have already voted.
The Monmouth University poll also surveyed MIchigan residents for the Democratic primary there.
Hillary Clinton is beating Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in Michigan 55-42 percent, according to the poll.
The polling institute surveyed 402 likely Republican voters and 302 likely Democratic voters.
The Michigan Republican and Democratic primaries are on Tuesday, March 8.
