No Fix for Real ID - oppose S.717 and H.R.1117

This came in from JBS, please be ceratin to pass this around and make certain you send an email to your legislators via the link below.

JBS Action Alerts for the Week Ending 5/10/08 (1 alert)
    Dear Fellow Americans:

    1. Oppose twin bills S.717 and H.R.1117 - An Unwise Compromise on REAL ID

Senate bill S.717, short titled the "Identification Security Enhancement Act of 2007," and its virtually identical companion bill in the House, H.R.1117, purportedly would alleviate concerns about The REAL ID Act of 2005 relative to the act's huge unfunded federal mandate on state governments and its serious threat to privacy and civil liberties. It appears to be a compromise intended to bring into agreement the Bush administration and those state governments which have objected to or complained about the implementation of the REAL ID Act.

The bill(s) would repeal title II of Real ID and reinstate section 7212 of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, which would still set federal standards for driver's licenses or ID cards, but include the participation of state officials and relevant groups in rulemaking negotiations. $300,000,000 of federal grant money would also be authorized for each of the fiscal years 2007 through 2013, amounting to a partial federal bailout of an outrageous act that is faltering.

Considering the dangers inherent in title II of the Real ID Act of 2005, it should be repealed or nullified without further ado and replaced with nothing - no compromise.

Nice rhetorical sleight of hand. In other words, if someone doesn't support the REAL ID Act, they support La Raza. Well, I don't support La Raza and I do not support the REAL ID either. Could it be there are other possible reasons that a patriotic American might not support the REAL ID?

There has already been ample time and energy devoted to exploring the failings of the REAL ID - such as the fact that identity theft and data breaches will increase due to the way this card stores your data in an insecure and easily accessible manner.

The REAL ID is not just a "you're either with us or against us" situation.

That's not what I said, nor did I suggest such a thing! I simply provided a small sampling of organizations that oppose the Real ID Act of 2005. Your conclusion was formed without any help from me.

For the record, I know there are good folks and groups on both side of the argument. My purpose of the post as a whole was to show that there is another side to the issue. In other words, not everyone in the fight against illegal immigration is against Real ID, nor is every group that opposes it our friend.

I have to disagree. Your examples for those opposing the REAL ID were OBL groups, while the supporters were all anti-illegal immigration. The implied meaning is pretty clear.

Why am I not surprised to hear an opponent to Real ID encourage folks not to listen to a supporter of the Real ID Act?

Sorry JP but I will continue to challenge you on the issue because folks need to hear both sides. ALIPACers are a smart bunch and they'll make their own decisions on Real ID. Furthermore, I suspect they'll make their own decisions on who they listen to also.

MW add Terry Anderson to the list of supporter for the RealID. He has said it many times and he doesn't understand why someone would be against it.
