We have child labor laws in the US.
Why are Americans importing produce from countries who exploit children?
I didn't get to see this. Are the children picking crops in the US and Mexico?

Dateline Presents AMERICA NOW: CHILDREN OF THE HARVEST 7/18
Sunday, July 18, 2010; Posted: 05:07 AM - by BWW News Desk
While the Department of Labor has made eliminating underage child labor a top priority and has hired 250 more investigators to be out on the fields this summer enforcing stiffer fines for farmers allowing children under 12 to work, agriculture has always been an exception to the rule when it comes to minimum age and the workplace. At twelve, a child can pick blueberries all day long in the hot sun, but at twelve, he's still too young to get a job stocking those berries in an air-conditioned supermarket. It's an unfair irony that is the reality for those children of migrant workers who live in the world of "Don't ask; don't tell."
"America Now: Children of the Harvest," airing on Sunday, July 18 (7:00-8:00 PM/ET), is a year-long investigation that takes viewers into the lives that belong to the invisible hands in America's bounty -- migrant farm workers who travel with their families to pick the fruits and vegetables that go on our table. Beginning in the Spring of 2009, "Dateline" went back to the fields to follow up on its Emmy-award winning 1998 story that followed migrant families from Texas -- we wanted to know, were kids under the age of 12 still doing backbreaking illegal work at the start of the 21st century and would we be surprised by how those children we followed in 1998 are doing now?
The documentary intimately follows the journey of ten-year-old Ulysses Cruz, a young boy whose life has been dictated by the cycle of the crops and NBC News cameras document children under 12 doing work in agriculture forbidden by child labor laws. In addition, "Dateline" correspondent Dennis Murphy interviews Carl Fillichio of the Department of Labor and Zama Coursen Neff of the non-governmental advocacy group, Human Rights Watch about our findings and to see what is being done to protect these children.
"Children of the Harvest," is the third installment of America Now series that examines issues facing Americans today and how communities across the country are doing in these adverse times. Grammy-winning guitarist, Laurence Juber (HTTP://WWW.LAURENCEJUBER.COM/LJ.HTML), composed and plays an original score for "Children of the Harvest."
David Corvo is the executive producer of "Dateline NBC."

They're showing it again.
1. The GM beet crop has deprived them of weeding work. They would have been deprived of a lot of other work if our modernization of US agriculture had not been sabotaged by the Carter Admin. Now, when they are out of work I guess we will be stuck with paying more social services.
2. Children picking blueberries are outmoded too---There are machines that can harvest these and other caneberries using a similar technique. See the Korvan picker. Except this one is also doing cherries:

3. Picking cucumbers. Here is a 43 sec video of a machine doing it:

ZZZZZZZZZZZZ---Wake me up if there is anything new......"Men of low degree are vanity, Men of high degree are a lie. " David

Why doesn't Ann Currey gather her camera crew and cover REAL stories about how Americans are loosing everything because illegal aliens, specifically from mexico (& many times south america), are:
-- putting their military (equipped with weaponry and armory bought and paid for by USA tax dollars, from Americans who can't work because their citizens are stealing our jobs) on the mexico side of the border within walking distance, so they can shoot anyone who comes into their country illegally - check out Tijuana?
-- equipping mexico's military with USA tax dollars from American workers whose jobs are being stolen by their citizens inside OUR country as illegal aliens, and then putting their ARMED military on their side of the border close enough to murder any Americans who come close to their border?
-- murdering, raping, disfiguring, robbing, American family members?
-- pushing their drugs on Americans more than they are on any other nation in the world, in an effort to murder Americans in a slower more vial way, where they can't be charged for the murders?
-- stealing American's identities so they have a fraudulent identification for every occasion (no less than two per illegal aliens) - which is a FELON, so they can NEVER be American citizens?
-- stealing America's tax dollars that even USA citizens workers cannot qualify for many of the benefits that illegal aliens can - because they're set up strictly for illegal aliens.

children of the harvest
The point of this story is to make Americans feel sorry for the children as young as 5 years old out picking. They are saying that the farmers are all evil and violating child labor laws . However it is the PARENTS (if you can call them that) who are making their kids do it. But of course they are poor and have to feed there 8 or 9 kids and so it is everbody elses fault. If I did that to my kids child protective services would on me. But of course they are immune to our laws.
We must push through early Thurs at this critical moment
