NV. Bundy supporter Michele Fiore files to run for Congress

Ending speculation, Fiore files to run for Congress

Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, right, files to run for Nevada’s open 3rd Congressional District seat at the Clark County Government Center Wednesday, March 9, 2016. With Fiore are Cassidy McGowan, left, executive assistant, field director Chance Bonaventura, back left, and volunteer Andrea Schulein.

Assemblywoman Michele Fiore filed today to run for Nevada’s open 3rd Congressional District seat, ending speculation that she would instead launch a re-election bid to remain in the state Legislature.

Fiore’s campaign will target the Republican establishment — namely state Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, who also has announced he will run for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Joe Heck, who is running for U.S. Senate.
    Roberson has not yet filed.
Jumping on a theme that has emerged in the Republican presidential race, Fiore said the reason Donald Trump and Texas. Sen Ted Cruz are the frontrunners is because “Republicans are tired of the same old establishment.”
In Nevada, she pointed to the state’s largest-ever tax increase passed last session by the Legislature and supported by Roberson to fund education.

“I’m a Republican that believes in freedom, true freedom, and that means we, as responsible adults, are free to do as we wish,” Fiore said.

Roberson is expected to have much of the support of the Republican establishment behind him, and Fiore will face a crowded Republican primary.
Air Force veteran Kerry Bowers and Dr. Annette Teijeiro have both filed, and Roberson, Danny Tarkanian and former Nevada Policy Research Institute President Andy Matthews are all expected to file in the coming days. The filing window closes March 18.
“As hard as I fight for the people, we need fighters in D.C. that are not afraid to ruffle their own peers’ feathers,” Fiore said.
Fiore has supported Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who was recently arrested on felony charges dating back to his 2014 armed standoff with law enforcement in Bunkerville. And she recently made headlines when she traveled to Oregon to advocate for his son Ammon Bundy and his supporters who staged an armed occupation of a wildlife refuge there.
She called Cliven Bundy and those arrested in Oregon “political prisoners” and called Arizona rancher LaVoy Finicum’s shooting death by police in Oregon an “unjustified homicide.” She added that law enforcement agents present at the time should be “indicted, absolutely without a shadow of a doubt.”
Bundy supporters will hold a rally Thursday outside the federal courthouse in Las Vegas before Cliven Bundy’s arraignment. Fiore said she wasn’t sure if she would attend.
Fiore also today reiterated her support for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in his run for the Republican presidential nomination but said she would be “Trump’s biggest fighter without a doubt” if he wins the nomination.
“At this time, I’m a loyal girl,” Fiore said. “I’m on the Cruz team, and that’s where I’m staying.”
Should she fail to win the Republican congressional primary, it would be too late for her to seek another elected office. In that case, she said, she would continue to remain involved in the community through some kind of public service and spend more time with her family.
Three Democrats also have filed to run for the seat, which covers Henderson and most of unincorporated Clark County south of Las Vegas. They are Congregation Ner Tamid President Jacky Rosen, attorney Jesse Sbaih and businessman Barry Michaels.
Fiore said she is supporting Republican Richard MacArthur to replace her in Assembly District 4. MacArthur occupied that seat from 2008 to 2012, though he has not yet filed.

Gun-loving assemblywoman Michele Fiore files for Congress

LAS VEGAS Republican Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore — who's known for brash statements, her love of guns and outspoken support for jailed Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy — filed paperwork Wednesday to run for Congress.

Fiore is seeking to replace Republican Rep. Joe Heck, who's leaving his seat in southern Nevada's 3rd Congressional District to run for U.S. Senate. The race has attracted a crowded field of Republicans including Danny Tarkanian, son of the late, legendary UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian, and state Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson, with whom she differs on a tax increase lawmakers passed last year.

"If we want to get back on track and right this ship, we need strong Republicans who are not afraid to go against Republicans," said Fiore, who wore a necklace with a gun-shaped pendant when she registered at the Clark County clerk's office.

The two-term lawmaker is taking a major gamble by not seeking re-election to her Las Vegas district, where registration is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, and instead jumping into a race against a pack of better-funded opponents. She said she's taking the risk after learning how often Nevada has to adjust its policies to meet federal mandates and keep federal money flowing to the state.

"Washington, D.C., is not Nevada and I don't want Nevada becoming D.C.," she said. "As I sat through the last term, that's exactly what's happening. We need to go to D.C. and fix that."

Fiore added that she feels more comfortable leaving her seat because a fellow conservative, former Assemblyman Richard McArthur, is planning to run in the district.

Fiore is an ardent supporter of gun rights and fought unsuccessfully last year to allow guns on college campuses. She drew criticism when told The New York Times that she wondered how many "hot little girls" would be sexually assaulted if they had a gun, and how many crimes would be avoided if predators had a bullet in their heads.

She also drew headlines when she released a calendar celebrating the 2nd Amendment that featured glamour shots of her with different costumes and guns for each month.

Her most recent foray into the news came when she helped coax out a holdout anti-government activist who was occupying an Oregon wildlife refuge. She said Wednesday the experience, which took place during a tense confrontation between law enforcement and occupiers aligned with Bundy's son Ammon, felt like being a 911 dispatcher guiding people to safety.

Other Republicans in the race include businessman Danny Tarkanian, who she pointed out has lost five races in the past, and Andy Matthews, a former conservative think tank president who she said needs a voting record before trying for Congress.

As for Roberson, who supported a successful tax increase she opposed: "I love Roberson's record because it just shows how non-Republican, non-conservative he is. It's a fabulous record to run against."

Roberson's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment on the criticism.

The 3rd Congressional District includes Summerlin and Henderson.
