Obama, Hispanics and the limits of 'si se puede' campaigning

Maybe reality has finally caught up with President Obama and Hispanics. Maybe the much anticipated marriage between Hispanics and Democrats won't be happening after all.

I am not suggesting that Hispanics are ready to embrace the GOP but there is huge disappointment with Democrats, or the party that promises but does not deliver.

The Washington Post has a good summary of President Obama's appearance on Spanish speaking TV:

"Whenever President Obama has sought to turn up pressure on Republicans on issues important to Latinos, he has found reliable partners in Spanish-language TV networks Univision and Telemundo.
On Thursday, Obama came calling again — but this time, his partners became adversaries.
Obama was appearing at a town-hall-style event at the Newseum to encourage the Latino community to sign up for health-insurance policies under the Affordable Care Act.
But the hosts, Jose Diaz-Balart of Telemundo and Enrique Acevedo of Univision, turned their sights on another issue: immigration.
“Your reputation has been tarnished among Latinos over deportations,” Acevedo said, referring to the administration’s removal of nearly 2 million immigrants who were in the country illegally. “How can you ask the Latino community to trust you?”"

Thanks to Jose Diaz-Balart from Telemundo and Enrique Acevedo of Univision for showing President Obama that some reporters do not get their talking points from the DNC. Their questions were fair, tough and confronted President Obama with questions that he never gets from mainstream media reporters.

President Obama's biggest problem is that he had 60 votes in the US Senate and large majorities in the House back in 2009-11. He had all of the votes to pass immigration reform but focused on health care instead.

President Obama assumed that Hispanics would vote to reelect him in 2012 even if he did not keep his promises. He turned out to be right but I still wonder what would have happened if Governor Romney had made a stronger effort for the Hispanic vote.

At some point, people hold you accountable for your promises. "Gracias a Dios" that Hispanics are finally holding President Obama accountable and waking up from their "si se puede" trance.
